- Humans have been hunting with birds for at least 5,000 years and in Idaho the practice has become increasingly popular thanks to ample public lands and raptor advocates. “The Art of Falconry” explores the unique relationship between human and hawk. We uncover the beauty of bird flight and dive into the mind of the falconer and the history of hunting with birds.
Beautiful piece. Such interesting people. From the guy who practiced ballet and was drawn to falconry, the married couple and the master the falconer , the biologist, everyone. Truly it is their life, their passion, their love. And it shows.
Very soothing and relaxing seeing the landscape, the music, and the birds fly and doing their thing and seeing these dedicated people talk about their journey and tireless work.
Great work and editing this video. Thank you!
Thank you for watching!!
I never truly understood the art of falconry until now. I want to learn more!
Thanks for watching Taylor!
It’s very addictive.. 👌👍
Beautiful video
Part of it for me is the beauty of their movements. It's like watching a great dancer. Or listening to beautiful music.
I also enjoy watching white-throated swifts as they fly. Endlessly, timelessly.
That's part of it too, there is a timelessness about it.
What beautiful birds! Love the scenery and the gorgeous birds of PREY!
Thanks Sophie!!
I got to hold a kestrel and a merlin this past weekend. It Immediately felt right for me. I've always found it very beautiful and cool, but actually feeling it launch from my hand after my friends lure was exhilarating. I've also said "maybe in another life." This may be the lifetime that I become a falconer.
Idaho keeps surprising me
Thanks for watching!
Wow! 🦅

Excellent video!
Glad you liked it!
Who should I contact about permission to use some of the footage of golden eagles within this piece?
Hi Meghan, you an email lauren.melink@idahoptv.org Thanks!
Im currently watching this with my yellow sided green cheek conure pretending I'm a falconer 😅
Good thing about where I’m from: NO FALCONRY LICENSE EXISTS! Mainly because falconry is a tradition.
I live in Idaho and I'm getting ready to take my test I've been looking everywhere but I can't find the regulations on birds allowed to have here. I know some states allow you to only start off as an Apprentice with a red tail or Kestral. Does anyone know the rags in Idaho what birds an appliance is alloewed to have?
IDAPA 13
TITLE 01
Chapter 14
13.01.14 - RULES GOVERNING FALCONRY IN THE STATE OF IDAHO
page 4, chapter 150 section 2 (Types of permits) subsection b :
Apprentice falconers may possess only the American kestrel (Falco sparverius) or red-tailed hawk
(Buteo jamaicensis). No apprentice may possess more than one (1) bird of prey at any time. No apprentice may
acquire more than one (1) bird of prey for replacement during any twelve (12) month period.
Best of luck buddy. May the Lord bless you in your endeavors and give you wisdom and safety out in the field.
@@deshyvin Thank you for this reply but you must have got this out of date. Today in idaho an apprentice falconer is allowed to hunt with any hawk/falcon their sponsor approves except for a Peregrine Falcon or golden eagle.
@@Nobodyspecial5150 right on .. I'm in Illinois and studying for my test as well. (Not in a position to take it immediately) .. I didn't look long just found what I could. So thank you for the clarification.
@@deshyvin Yeah I kept finding the old regulations as well but finally got in contact with a master Falconer and he gave me the new regulations. It's basically just the federal regulations which is nice because starting off with a red tail or kestral just isn't going to cut it for me that's not why I'm getting into falconry. I do appreciate you taking your time to search for me your awesome 🇺🇲
@@Nobodyspecial5150 if I may ask; why are you getting into falconry?
My presidential candidate is a falconer..
A privileged man that used his privilege to learn something cool.
