As a Londoner of 68 years, like many my age I had to move out further and further over the years to buy a decent property and now lived most of my life outside London. But while I'm still a true Londoner when I go back I can still find areas I don't know much about and explore as you did as it's such a vast city. So many of these kind of videos but this is maybe the best I've seen.
I'm the same - Born in Mile End - now in Bromley ( Via Basildon and Elephant and castle ) and love going into London ( With the Freedom Pass ! ) been there today...Great Video - You like pubs 🙂
Finally, people who understand what london is all about, the history the old mixed with the new, the walks the pubs the shops, London is incredible if you know how to appreciate it
The church and Mitre pub are in Ely Place which actually started life as Ely Palace. Back in the day a fella called John de Kirkby bought up a bunch of land in what is now Holborn. In 1290 he kicked the bucket and left it all to the see of Ely. Ely is a town in Cambridgeshire that has an important cathedral. A see is an area of a bishop’s ecclesiastical jurisdiction. This is important because since way way back, the bishop of Ely has been given a seat in the House of Lords - and still is today. To fulfil their governmental obligations the bishops would need some city digs, and what better place to build some than on this heft of land they’d just inherited. They set to work, transforming the place into a series of houses and expansive gardens. They also ordered the construction of a church (for obvious reasons), and a pub (for even more obvious reasons). But the most important thing here is that in order to avoid the taxes and rules of London law, they saw to it that Ely Palace was governed under their own laws - those of Cambridgeshire. In 1772 Ely Palace was sold to the crown, and the bishops commissioned a new property in Mayfair. The crumbling old palace was promptly torn down and replaced with rows of terraced houses that you can still see today. With the palace gone, a more fitting name for the area was needed. They dropped an A and Ely Palace became Ely Place. The church that was part of the old palace also remains - the only part that wasn’t torn down in 1772. It’s still named the Church of St. Etheldreda, as it was at its founding, and it’s one of two buildings from the reign of King Edward I (1272-1307) to still stand in London. The pub, Ye Olde Mitre is same pub that the bishop of Ely had built in the 1500s. The building has obviously changed. The one that stands now was part of the 1772 reconstruction, but a pub under that name has stood on that site since 1546 at least. Ye Old Mitre’s licences were still issued by authorities in Cambridge right up until the 1960’s.
One of the things I'm proud of in my country is the preservation of old buildings, yes new stuff gets built, but you can't tear down historic buildings which means we retain a link to our past & heritage. Glad you enjoyed your trip. 🇬🇧🤝🏻🇨🇦

You would have walked past Old Scotland Yard, it is on the embankment just after the Houses of Parliament, it has brown and cream horizontal stripes, however, it isn't open to the public.
Great video guys keep it up! As you’re a history buff I’ll point out the following - OLD Scotland Yard was right next to where you were standing when you asked that question - the striped building - white Portland stone with red bricked building with turrets on the corners was the original Victorian building for the metropolitan police , in the sixties the MET (police) moved into a ghastly ugly 1960s block in Victoria near Buckingham palace - it was called NEW Scotland Yard - because they moved - but - now they have moved again and are almost back where they started - they are in a building next to the original one - so the new new Scotland Yard is actually nearly old Scotland Yard….. 🤣👌🤷👏

A tip for you. In the UK if you want a pub, especially in smaller towns & villages, look for a church or church spire, you will usually find a pub or inn. Thats because in the old days the monks or priests used to make beer or cider so they were close to churches or monostaries.

They're showing you places dating back 500+ years but you talk about 'colonialism'? Of course you do. The village I grew up in was 7 miles from the Roman city of Chester ('Deva Victrix'), when much of Britain was under empire. I'm particularly amused that you aim a comment about colonialism to Canadians! People of European descent benefiting from living in a country that is as it is (for example rated a 'full democracy') because of colonialism.
You were only a couple of hundred yards away from the old building of New Scotland Yard. Facing the new building of New Scotland Yard it would have been, as I said, 200 yards to your left. If you can find footage of an old (1950/60), British ,TV program called 'No Hiding Place' the opening scene, every week, was of a police car leaving the old New Scotland Yard.
It can be really cool and rainy, umbrella can be $17 CAD Also bring a scarf!!! If you don’t have enough clothes go to M&S for a few good items of clothing!!! Mike and Jenny
What clothes would you wear in spring at home? , just wear the same in England . You don’t need to buy any new clothes. I did smile at the wearing of the woolly hats . Don’t buy an umbrella 😂😂 a coat with a hood is sufficient. You’re probably choosing the best time to be in England, it’s not humid then .
Given your interest in history, a visit to the British Museum would have been a better choice than the Natural History Museum (even though it is fantastic).
Oh dear, Harrods is a tourist trap. They sell mostly things you can get elsewhere cheaper. I certainly would not go there for a pizza. It always saddens me to see tourists go to London and nowhere else in the UK. Seeing London is not like seeing the UK.
Unfortunately, London now has too many people from elsewhere.. too crowded. I enjoyed your video, seemed a bit worse for where after your pub crawl lol.
Best of advice would be get out of London. The history is wonderful but its too expensive and doesn't represent us as a nation. Head to Oxford for interesting city and towns. Then really head north to God's own County North Yorkshire . Enjoy!!
Nobody cares. Most people feel the same way about Canada. Can anybody name a famous Canadian of any real note or anything about Canada other than snow? It's the most anonymous and featureless country in the developed world.
You ignoring Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Kent etc etc? all beautiful, not in London and South of Watford 😂 I had to tell a Scot a couple of weeks back I wasn't a Londoner. He thought I was one as I live around 30 miles outside of London in Hampshire.
I wish people would stop talking such closed-minded nonsense. I'm from NW England but love London. I visit 3 or 4 times a year. I'll never tire of the place. It's our capital, and one of the world's great cities. I love and visit many other parts of the UK, too.
Why? It's refreshing to see North Americans with a true appreciation of the history rather than them viewing the UK as a Harry Potter theme park and comparing everywhere to Diagon Alley.
@@Finding-Fishit's nice to see your appreciation. You're a lovely couple. Another fun fact about the New Scotland Yard building is when it was under construction in 1888 a female torso was left in the cellars they were building as a taunt by an unknown serial murderer. Part of the Thames Torso Murders series. The press dubbed it The Whitehall Mystery and it was initially linked to Jack The Ripper who was active that very same autumn. The victim was never identified and the killer (of at least 4 women) never caught.
London England - the world's greatest city.
I worked at the Natural History Museum for 20 years and never grew tired of the place :)

It's always fascinating to see how people from America, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are in awe of their ancestral homelands when they visit.
Love the Mother Country

@@Finding-Fish it’s ok, I believe you 😉
How cold was it then in Spring? I’m going there next week late April 2024. Afraid not bringing enough warm clothes there.
It can be really cool and rainy, umbrella can be $17 CAD
Also bring a scarf!!!
Thanks John I was there and made a video about it!!!
24 hours in London
you are from Canada and you are always cold ? - I am always cold as well -- even with 20celcius
Lol,
Yes my wife is always cold!!!
Even today
One pretend pup landlord who knows a whole lot of history would be Al Murrey.
Try not to get hung up on London, hire a car and spend a couple of weeks touring in Autumn, sorry, Fall.
That would be cool!!!\I want to find Proper Fish and chips
a plnt of worthingtons in my local £1.85
Where’s that?
You saw Queen Elizabeth the second tower not Big Ben unless you went inside the tower, as Big Ben is the big bell inside the tower.
Okay thank you for the info Vicky!
Up next is Proper Fish and Chips
“When a man is tired of London he is tired of life”
LOVE THIS LINE!!!
LOVE!!
Oh dear, Harrods is a tourist trap. They sell mostly things you can get elsewhere cheaper. I certainly would not go there for a pizza. It always saddens me to see tourists go to London and nowhere else in the UK. Seeing London is not like seeing the UK.
LOL
But we did have fun!!!
We did, and can't wait to see the Rest of UK
Please give me Ideas.
Mike
Unfortunately, London now has too many people from elsewhere.. too crowded. I enjoyed your video, seemed a bit worse for where after your pub crawl lol.
i felt no Pain after a few pints Bruce!!!
You say that you are always cold. All I have to say is that you live in the wrong country.
Get off the tourist trail in London, and you'll soon find a multicultural shhthole that resembles Mogadishu mixed with Pakistan
Best of advice would be get out of London. The history is wonderful but its too expensive and doesn't represent us as a nation. Head to Oxford for interesting city and towns. Then really head north to God's own County North Yorkshire .
Enjoy!!
Grandparents of from there!!!!
Absolutely love Yorkshire
Your wife can handle her beer better than you. 😂
LOL
She Can!!!!!!
I had to Drive🙃
im canadian with british grandparents i personally have Zero interest in going there zero .....but anyways good job guys
Hey James
Thanks for watching!
My wife wanted to go so I said yes of course!!!
I appreciate it!
Mike
I love it
Nobody cares. Most people feel the same way about Canada. Can anybody name a famous Canadian of any real note or anything about Canada other than snow? It's the most anonymous and featureless country in the developed world.
What to do? See the sights and get the f##k out of that Cess Pit of a City!
I take it you don’t like London
Soooooo sad London is not the same city anymore 😢😢
I still loved it!!
Does anyone like London! Nobody speaks English!
Does anyone like London!!!

Top Travel destinations in the world
It’s an amazing city! Old meets new, great food and so much to do🩵❤️💜
You know nothing you little keyboard warrior
"Nobody"?
I speak English. I like London. (I was born here in London).
Have you been to the rest of England-there’s more to England than London.
Hey Susan yes exactly,
Where do you suggest???
Looking. For Fish and Chip options and a good cup of tea
Mike
London isnt England. If you want to know real England you need to go north of Watford.
Love the North
GrandParents are from Yorkshire
You ignoring Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Kent etc etc? all beautiful, not in London and South of Watford 😂
I had to tell a Scot a couple of weeks back I wasn't a Londoner.
London is also England! Don't diss it. England would be a much duller place without it.
Not the most endearing of people.
Why? It's refreshing to see North Americans with a true appreciation of the history rather than them viewing the UK as a Harry Potter theme park and comparing everywhere to Diagon Alley.
Why so unnecessarily rude?
Would you call yourself "endearing"?
He's fine.
Don’t be so odious.
The "Old" Scotland Yard was badly damaged by a Fenian bomb in 1884 so they built a new one.
Oh really!!!
Thanks for the info
I’m from Canada so I love to see all your old buildings
@@Finding-Fishit's nice to see your appreciation. You're a lovely couple. Another fun fact about the New Scotland Yard building is when it was under construction in 1888 a female torso was left in the cellars they were building as a taunt by an unknown serial murderer. Part of the Thames Torso Murders series. The press dubbed it The Whitehall Mystery and it was initially linked to Jack The Ripper who was active that very same autumn. The victim was never identified and the killer (of at least 4 women) never caught.
