We continue our examination of the sacrament of Confirmation, specifically the celebration and effects of the sacrament of Confirmation. Fr. Mike explores the different elements of the rite of Confirmation and the ways in which Confirmation increases and deepens our baptismal graces. He emphasizes, in particular, the special strength of the Holy Spirit that we receive to spread and defend the Faith by our words and actions. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1297-1305.

Day 177..!! The Celebration of Confirmation. OK, so I’m way ahead today. I have lots of time to make up for. Our Chrism Mass is on Tuesday of Holy Week…! How could any priest be at Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday, when there is so much else going on…??? I always know where all my priests will be on that Tuesday. (Frankly, it’s the ONLY DAY I know where they will be..!! LOL) I have been the Parish Secretary over 20 years… so I know from whence I speak. I think they try to keep their whereabouts from me on purpose.!! LOL 😂 ! Lord send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth..! Yesterday’s Gospel… told us 3 times.. not to have fear.. or in other words.. ‘DO NOT BE AFRAID’…! People are sick of me ‘witnessing’ I’m sure.. LOL I CANNOT WAIT to hear you tomorrow. I am praying for all of you. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless. ❤❤❤

Day 177 takeaways: The Celebration of Confirmation. The sacred Chrism is consecrated by the Bishop in the Roman rite and in some cases by the Patriarch in the Eastern Rites. The Bishop extends his hands over the Confirmand and anoints their forehead saying, “BE SEALED WITH THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.” In the Eastern rites, more body parts are anointed. The Bishop unites himself to each Confirmand by saying, “Peace be with you.” There are 5 effects of Confirmation: 1. It roots us more deeply to God the Father in being a Child of God, 2. It unites us more firmly to Jesus Christ. 3. It increases the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in us - wisdom, understanding, counsel, Fortitude, knowledge, piety, and Holy Fear. 4. It renders our bond with the Holy Spirit more perfect. 5. It gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the Faith by words and actions as a true witness of Jesus Christ; And to profess the name of Jesus Christ BOLDLY; And to never be ashamed of the Criss. It lights a fire within those Confirmed that they may profess Christ publicly and officially as a representative of the Church. One has the strength and responsibility to no longer keep their Faith private, but rather spread the Faith by word and action. IT IS NO LONGER SOMEONE ELSES JOB. We must tell the world about the goodness of God.

There exists a great problem in the Church. We influence our candidates on the great power that will overshadow us upon confirmation without knowing or preaching who the Holy Spirit is and the manner in which He acts. He is most subtle as of a gentleman. He will come to those who invite Him but when the invitation is refused He will leave. Remember Mary had to sincerely say "Yes" before He conceived in her. We must also say "Yes, Amen" if we truly want to be in dwelt by Him. We all want to have a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit as at Pentecost but that was primarily meant then for the ushering in of the Holy Spirit into the world. We subtly receive Him in humility but strongly profess what He's done for those great saints and martyrs; maybe what He's done in our life too. The power of the world under the influence is in contrast a mighty power but it lacks in sustainability because it wrecks lives. So many are washed away after confirmation because they are looking for that great powerful influence. We need to be groomed to invite the subtle, gentleness of the Holy Spirit. Remember the world is a powerful influence under Satan but it's a hollow power whereas the power of the Holy Spirit is subtle and gentle yet it is the power from on high for the confirmed to go forth and proclaim the gosple of Christ, letting your light to shine for the world to see you are a child of the Most High.
Above all confirmation is not graduation.

I don’t remember my confirmation at all. I know I was confirmed but honestly it’s a blur. I thought we had to chose a name. Am I imagining that? The same with first communion. When my little cousin was baptized I recall the oil and how it smelled very floral. The only sacrament I remember is my marriage. My wedding. It was a good day. ✝️❤️

I don’t remember being told any of this. Unfortunately, even the catechism we teach at our parish doesn’t make this as clear as Fr Mike just did. Candidates get confirmed because grandma insisted. They haven’t a meaningful understanding of the sacrament and all it entails.

Today's lesson has been most eye opening for me. This is something I need to be more conscious of doing. But I need to know how to share my faith and live my faith in such a way that people around me will see or feel my love of God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. We ate all so blessed to be children of God and to be a part of the Catholic Church. Thank you Father Mike for sharing our faith with us all and what it means to be Catholic.

5 effects of Confirmation ...
1. Roots us more deeply in the divine filiation [being adopted as sons and daughters of God the Father] which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!"
2. Unites us more firmly to Jesus Christ.
3. Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us (see the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit).
4. Renders our bond with the Church [the Body of Christ] more perfect.
5. Gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.

Hello Mary - I was a confirmation sponsor last year. My confirmand attended her parish program and I found a wonderful study for us to use in our monthly meet up. It is a full curriculum for confirmation through Dynamic Catholic. It is free and online. If you want the books, these are also free - just have to pay for shipping. It was a wonderful thought provoking and prayerful experience for both of us.

I am going to add Ascension's Chosen (for Confirmation) to our home school curriculum to prepare our son for his Confirmation.
I was confirmed at age 12 or 13? I recall we were told we now soldiers of Christ. I recall after confirmation I went around with my shoulders upright, chest up, even marching around like a soldier! There was this action the Bishop did on each of us. I recall vividly after anointing each person, with his palm he gave us a slight tap on the cheek. We all dreaded receiving that "slap". But here in the catechesim it is not mentioned. Why? Or was that action unique to all bishops individually?
I believe they used to do it regularly. I was confirmed in 2014 & did not get a slap. Also it was done by the priest not the bishop.
It may be something that is done in the Latin rite? That's how it was done to me.
I was wondering about this. I clearly remember "the slap" but no handshake. I'm assuming that the handshake has replaced the slap.
@@StAlphonsusHasAPosse I believe so. When my granddaughter was Baptised in the Tridentine rite last year. The ceremony started outside the church, at a stage the priest put on her an apron, after so many deep prayers of invocation, the apron was removed and a white piece of fabric with a red cross was laid on her, then she was brought into the church....

Edit: I was confirmed only 5 months ago, so I don't know how it's done at a Novus Ordo congregation, or for a child. I'm sure they are beautiful either way.

The effect of Confirmation is a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit like that of Pentecost. The outpouring roots the recipient more deeply in divine sonship with the Father, binds more firmly with Christ and to the Church and reinvigorates the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the recipients soul. The anointing gives a special strength of the Holy Spirit to witness to the Christian faith by word and action. My task, as the official representative of the Catholic Church, is to boldly confess the name of Christ in my life every day.

Please pray for Souls in Purgatory. Go ahead, just take about 30 seconds to help save a soul that maybe is your family member or friend! Go forth and help save! Here is the prayer:
(According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.)
The Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.
Pray this prayer 10x a day. God bless you for sharing this on here. After my dear mother passed 7.5 years ago I have a great devotion to the dear souls in purgatory. I've pray with Susan Tassimo novena for the souls in purgatory daily years now. I'm trying to teach my grandchildren to pray for the Holy Souls in purgatory. I can only hope they'll remember to pray for me when and if I become one after death. 🙏🤲🙏💕💝

I received Confirmation in 5th grade (1958) and was told we were becoming "soldiers of God". I had no idea until recently how much grace and power I received at that time! Thank you Fr. Mike and Ascension Press for educating me so well on the sacraments.

@@TrixRN I have a porttable computer with a large screen and great speakers. I do not have to pay for internet as I can tap in to my brothers wireless server next door. 🥰

Today, our faith is confusing. Our leaders are doing and saying things that go against the magisterium from the last 2,000 years. Priests and now bishops are being cancelled by our own church. Too many priests and especially bishops are being silent afraid of the Vatican coming for them because they teach what Jesus taught. At least now, I will speak up! It is a shame that only few bishops have this strength. I pray for them.

Sadly, not everyone is Confirmed by their bishop; many times the authority is given to the parish priest.
