Howdy y’all 🤠 Happy day 178. I think I’ll share today’s message with my candidate. She was baptized in the Church of Christ & is now seeking conversion to the Catholic Church. So confession & confirmation are the 2 sacraments she’s preparing for, of course, communion too.
      Have a great day!🙏❤️

For the intentions of the ENTIRE CIY community and all of our brothers and sisters in need of prayer, especially those who were unintentionally overlooked either on this site or elsewhere, worldwide(which, of course, includes those in need of purgatorial prayer: hang in there, you are almost over the finish line, you are in the final stretch and will be in the loving arms of Jesus and Mary in no time) This is for all who read this and for those who don't read this both now and in the future. My Jesus Mercy!!!
He was finally going home. He was going home a changed man. This time he is not demanding that he get what he deserves, but willing to take whatever he could get. “Give me” has been replaced with “help me,” and his defiance has been replaced with repentance.
He comes asking for everything with nothing to give in return. He has no money. He has no excuses.
And he has no idea how much his father has missed him!
He has no idea the number of times his father has paused between chores to look out the front gate for his son. The boy has no idea the number of times his father has awakened from restless sleep, gone into the son’s room, and sat on the boy’s bed. And the son would have never believed the hours the father has sat on the porch next to the empty rocking chair, looking, longing to see that familiar figure, that stride, that face.
As the boy comes around the bend that led up to his house, he rehearses his speech one more time.
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.”
He approaches the gate and places his hand on the latch. He begins to lift it, but he pauses. His plan to go home suddenly seema silly. “What’s the use?” he heard himself asking himself. “What chance do I have?” He ducked, turned around, and began to walk away.
Then he heard the footsteps. He heard the slap, slap, slap of sandals. Someone was running. He didn’t turn to look. It’s probably a servant coming to chase me away or my big brother wanting to know what I’m doing back home. He began to leave.
But the voice he heard was not the voice of a servant nor the voice of his brother; it was the voice of his father.
    “Son!”
    “Father?”
He turned to open the gate, but the father already has. The son looked at his father standing at the entrance. Tears glistened on his cheeks as arms stretched from east to west inviting the son to come home.
“Father, I have sinned.” The words were muffled as the boy buries his face in his father’s shoulder.
The two wept. For a forever they stood at the gate intertwined as one. Words were unnecessary. Repentance has been made; forgiveness has been given.
    The boy was home.
If there is a scene in this story that deserves to be framed, it’s the one of the father’s outstretched hands. His tears are moving. His smile is stirring. But his hands call us home. Imagine those hands. Strong fingers. Palms wrinkled with lifelines. Stretching open like a wide gate, leaving entrance as the only option.
When Jesus told this parable of the loving father, I wonder, did he use his hands? When he got to this point in the story, did he open his arms to illustrate the point?
Did he perceive the thoughts of those in the audience who were thinking, I could never go home. Not after my life? Did he see a housewife look at the ground and a businessman shake his head as if to say, “I can’t start over. I’ve made too big a mess”? And did he open his arms even wider as if to say, “Yes. Yes, you can. You can come home”?
Whether he did that day or not, I don’t know. But I know that he did later. He later stretched his hands as open as he could. He forced his arms so wide apart that it hurt. And to prove that those arms would never fold and those hands would never close, he had them nailed open.
    They still are.
    Max Lucado

I am so grateful Father Mike discussed the lack of preparation before Confirmation and how we can still prepare ourselves afterwards. I didn't seem to get the full effects due to my lack of full participation and paying attention (that was many, many years ago). Now I know I can still benefit from these effects afterward and I can let go of the regret that I did so poorly the first time. Thank you, Father and Ascension Press!!

Father Mike, I wasn't able to go through the whole Bible with you, both times, and I am trying again this year, but I haven't missed a day of the Catechism in a Year. I have read the whole Bible in a year, the year before I had cancer, but somehow the CCC is a life-line for me. And I am so grateful. I do attend daily Mass and I do read the Bible, I just couldn't keep up with the daily Bible readings, but I am clinging with all of my heart to the CCC.

Only those already baptised can and should receive the sacrament of confirmation, which can be received only once. To receive confirmation efficaciously, the candidate must be in a state of grace. The original minister of confirmation is the bishop. In this way, the link between the confirmed and the Church in her apostolic dimension is made manifest. Let us open ourselves to the gifts of the Holy Spirit in understanding the sacrament of Confirmation.

It was great to hear about choosing Godparents and Sponsors who can help teach us and not just relatives for the sake of being relatives. My husband wanted his sister to be a Godparent, however I couldn't in conscience choose her as I had seen her publicly be pro abortion. When I said I wanted to choose an alternative Godparent, it went down like a lead balloon. It was an awful time of friction with my husband and his family, a friction I had never experienced before. Thankfully we are on the same page now. Praying for you Fr Mike and everyone doing CIAY ❤🙏

An interesting thought came to me - the 3 sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist), somehow mirrors the Trinity. Baptism is the act of the Father, for it makes us adopted children of the father. The Eucharist mirrors the act of the son for it is the Jesus body and blood. Confirmation is the act of the Holy Spirit for it empower us with grace of the spirit.
These 3 sacraments seems to emphasize each person of the Trinity in a special way though all 3 persons are fully involved in the sacrament... Just my thoughts.

Please pray for Souls in Purgatory. Go ahead, just take about 30 seconds to help save a soul that maybe is your family member or friend! Go forth and help save! Here is the prayer:
(According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.)
    The Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
Amen.
God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

    Day 178
Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit - his actions, his gifts and his biddings - in order to be capable of assuming the apostolic responsibility
What is the apostolic responsibility? "Go forth and spread the Gospel and the Holy Spirit we have recieved"
If we did not do back when we recieved Confirmation, then we do it now. Let us go for Confession and as Fr. said *Unleash the graces of Confirmation*

Day 178 takeaways: Every Baptized person can and should receive Confirmation for without it Christian initiation remains incomplete. The Latin custom is to separate the 3 Sacraments, with the Holy Eucharist given at the age of reason and Confirmation given at the age of discretion. There is preparation needed to be confirmed. To receive Confirmation one must be in a State of Grace to more intensely receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The person being confirmed should have a fitting spiritual sponsor that can help them move forward. The Ordinary Minister of Confirmation is the Bishop. Bishops are successors to the Apostles and therefore can unite the Confirmands more closely to the Church’s evangelical role. The Bishop, if the need arises, can delegate this role to a priest. The. Church desires that no one is deprived of the graces of God’s Sacraments in the hour of need.

Day 178 Thank you Father Mike Schmitz. Please, please pray for Bishop Joseph Strickland. I really, really wish Bishop Strickland was my Bishop....instead of Milton Gregory.
My Confirmation was July 3rd of 1992 I was a teenager, unfortunately I was not teach the whole truth about my beloved faith such as having sex without being married by the church, abortion is the killing of an unborn innocent baby. Those are huge, huge issues that should be cover constantly with the formation of the young teenagers seeking to be followers of Christ. Thank God that now I finally know the RAW UNFILTERED TRUTH. Unfortunately there are a lot of Catholics who still think that abortion and adultery, fornication are okay and go to received the Eucharist. I know some Catholics who do this. When I tell them that is wrong they say their Priest has not say such thing.

When I was confirmed at the age of 15 yrs in the Catholic Church (UK) we were told to choose a saints name for our confirmation, which we all did. As we have now reached the final part of Confirmation today, I am a little confused that there has been no mention of this in the Catechism? I wonder why?

Pope Pius X lowered the age of reception of Holy Communion to 7 from 12, l think because of the life of Little Nellie of Holy God and he paid tribute to her. She died at the age of 4 ,having received the sacraments of initiation by special permission. She chatted to the infant of Prague who came alive for her , offering him her new shoes in return for his ball (the world ).
I translated her life story into Irish but the saintly Brother Seán embarrassed me with all the grammatical errors on proof reading it.
There are only small pockets of Native speakers here now.
