Thanks so much for sharing all these tips. I was wondering how I could get those over-the-cloud shots. Now I know there is a workaround (by temporarily switching off the downward-facing sensors in the settings).
Great video thanks....I wrote to a drone pilot who flies in very cold temperatures, he advised wiping the blades with silicon wipes. He said it stops the blades from freezing up.
Take care even in light snow, especially on the Mini series! My Mini 2 fell out of the sky several weeks ago due to frozen snow on the props. Was only up about 5 minutes too. I was very lucky to get away with one arm pulling off at the screw joint to the body, which ended up being repairable.
@DMProductions I actually did a winter video back in 2015, but camera only, as I had not yet had a drone at all. But what I did is carefully check the weather predictions ahead of time, and go out on mostly sunny days, and days with cloud cover, but little to no snowing and no raining at all. That should help most drone pilots and camera operators to avoid the elements as much as possible. Thanks for yet another great video!!
I live in a place where it's winter way more then summer. Cold weather flying is a necessity! Thk you all for the tips, and thank you brother for the videos!
Hi Darren, great tips. One more I would put in for the condensation piece: I bought reusable silica gel to absorb moisture from all my gear. I use it for a while then dry it out again, but it is always there, so for situations as you mentioned, with radical temp changes, this does avoid that condensation on most cases. In my case, coming in to the car from 2oC or less and the car is at 18oC or more, so I tend to put the drone in the bag before going in. The silica is in a pouch on top of the drone, on the bag flap, so it will absorb all the moisture and not give the heated car a chance to condense the lens.
@DMProductions On the Mini 4 Pro, would you consider a but of tape on the back over the card slot? I was thinking something like electrical tape which can easily be removed. Only immediate concern would be if it came off and hit the propellers.
Thanks for all the great info. I been taking some chances to get some great shots, at higher risk of course...I think Ill just wait till till I crash my drone for good before upgrading, as still using the Mini 2
A friend of mine flies his Mavic 3 in snow and rain. Biggest issues are the exposed motors which he had to replace on occasion. Propeller cones would prevent water from reaching the motors but unfortunately, nobody makes any.
I got icing on my Mini 2 when I thought it was a good idea to fly above some low fog on a cold day. It caused the drone to stop coming down at about 3 metres off the ground (which was below the fog). I thought that I was going to have to stand under it for about 10 minutes and try to catch it when the battery went flat and it fell from the sky. I finally got it back by flying it away and then bringing it back slowly while telling it to reduce height.
Thansk for a very interesting video! Here's a novel, a book, being really engaged. Charged batteries.... Of course! The Mini 3 pro batteries do discharge by time but not much from an evening charge to the next day. The Mavic 3 pro bagtteries stayed charged for 2 weeks... A drone collegue reported that his 5 year old Mavic 2 pro's batteries looked good during the beginning of the flight but then dropped like falling down a cliff, in cold, around 0 C .... Advice #3. Being a new place, not much prepaired... First doing a test flight, checking the views, the range etc, recording what can be recorded, going home for a fresh battery and further "sharp shooting" works well for me. Advice #4. I fully agree, but..... Exposing the drone for light humidity repeatedly will likely affect things like the com port, battery connections in the long run. Refere to a multicontact in the boot of the car after 100 000 km, some 8 years. One day the rear lights got completely mad. The GND contact had corroded! Polishing all the contacts the car was 100% good again! Watching the weather prognosis I look at the humidity and awoid flying in 100% relative humidity! Propellers are rotating wings. Compare with icing on aeroplane wings! Bad things has happened. Gusty winds..... Know that the drone uses more battery enrgy to keep the drone attitude and altitude! Flight time reduced. Also the RTH will be unreliable or not available. Staying away from rain/snow and winds like 8 m/s or more, there is a da, now and then, for flying.. Try flying in minus 6 degrees, some light wind, being "outdoors".... The drone will manage a lot longer then the fingers. Sitting in the car, maybe holding the camera close to the car window, more flying time can be achieved. What about drone recording during low battery RTH? Are there any tests showing the current consupmtion in the drone? I once initiated an RTH home some minute earlier than the indicator value BUT I turned on drone recording. The final landing conditions were a bit stressed..... Ooops. The DJI system might try to land on(?) fog, and turns off the props... Condensation.... Thanks for the warning! Not happend here, yet. Will not happend now! Returning home without battery in the drone preserves those contacts... A shot from -6 to -8 degrees C: th-cam.com/video/8lo6ecVCZvs/w-d-xo.html Thanks for a really great video!
Hello. I have a dji mini 4 pro. I fly it in UK. The max distance on the max altitude (120m) is only 1700m, then I completely lose a signal between RC2 AND MY DRONE DJI MININI 4 PRO can someone tell me how to improve the signal( Thanks.
Are there major concerns flying through fog when it’s warmer? I seem to see people getting some really sick shots doing a reveal shot coming through a cloud or fog.
@@DMProductions Gotcha. I appreciate it! I flew through some fog for the first time on my most recent trip in Kotor. Was super nervous. Also, I was lucky to have brought it in when I started feeling some drizzle. Pretty much the moment I caught my drone, it started absolutely pouring. It was a long, uncomfortable, and wet hike back down to Old Town, but the shots I got were totally worth it! Haha
I've flowing by DJI Mavic 2 and my new DJI Mini 4 pro in -40 C / -40F and colder here in Canada. Battery drain is a definite problem, but when its that cold, you just want to go outside for a short period of time anyways,
Those are great , just not always remember on site those tips . As for example the new option turning off those down sensors. You get in fog , panic and do weird thing . I did watch like hundred of those tips and still mess up in tight situations just to land and than think i was so dumb and didn't remember all those things :) And it's because i do watch more than fly myself and there is a lack of experience ...
Rain is a nightmare. Wind too. I did a roof inspection in winds just yesterday and even getting into position is hard. It used more batteries than needed. I'd say flying in winter is a disgrace. The very end of the inspection, I wa sdoing a video of the roof, and the drone caught a cross wind and went 15 meters to the right over a main road and bus stop before flying back up high to saferty

If you're up a mountain, the air is also thinner which means the rotors need to work harder to produce lift, therefore reducing battery time further.
