some woodworking advice: when using the circular saw, use blue painters tape over the cut to help prevent that tearout. you can also use a sacrificial piece of wood, but usually tape is easier. to help make those galvanized plates on the bottom, you could use a router to make a slight inset for them to sit flush. the metal corner brackets can be covered with an angled piece of wood. this makes it look a bit nicer, and prevents things from getting lost in the corner. rounding over the edges of the top rails and topper will help the edges from feeling sharp, and will prevent catching fabric planning a table out beforehand can help a lot. you can use a free version of SketchUp with very little experience to model a table. they have a 3d warehouse that has most Ikea components already modeled, so you can just add what you want to them. this helps with discovering problems like the legs being too tall and needing to get cut down, having a topper that isn't quite large enough, or buying the right thickness of wood.
I happen to own this IKEA table model and this DIY is incredibly inspirational. Also quite impressive when you consider that board gaming tables are very expensive, and this one looks really amazing for just 200$. Adding cup trays and trays that could mount on some rails wouldn't add more than a 100$ to the overall cost. Great work, both table-wise and content wise.
I know you didn't use the original ledge but painters tape at the cut line where you accidentally had to much would have fixed the chipping issue when cutting with the circular saw. Great Video I watched from beginning to end.

Very fun work, one recommendation that you may have thought of that I would make is on your leaves on the table top, maybe screw in some rubber feet at the corners so that it’s easier to slot perfectly over the game top and that way there’s no way that the Table top will slip when you’re having dinner, the last thing you want is for somebody to be eating and then they lean in the whole thing is pushed over onto the floor. The other thought I have is, while it looks like using the rails is working just fine, Maybe there’s some kind of a cup or dish or something else that you can get a bunch of, preferably plastic ones, and then screw in some kind of a post so that you can drop it along the rail and it will hold in place, and that way you can have a space to put your pieces where they won’t get knocked off of the rail if you aren’t paying attention.and you could probably do something similar with cupholders or whatever you wanted to do. But nice build, very fun.
Okay hear me out: You drill blind holes into the side rails, match marking the tabletop. Drill short blind holes into the tabletop, slightly smaller than the holes in the side rails, and glue dowels into these. Boom, now you've got alignment pins.
You could even just drill straight through the topper into the rails so you know the holes will line up. Then you'd just flush trim and sand. You could even leave them proud by about 1/4" and round them off and they'd just look like a little design feature.

For the loft of all that is good and holy, please buy an outfeed table. They are $20. Safety issues aside, when yo ripped the topper in half, you damaged both pieces: the corner of the one that fell, and the saw bite on the one that didn't. Outfeed tables will prevent that from happening, and VASTLY reduce your chance of kickback and significant injury.
1-As long as the people that spent all the money/time building it are happy with it, that is what matters. 2-This looks like a crazy amount of work and frustration for only some armrests and preventing dice from falling off the table. Why not just use a dice tray instead? What good ate the arm rests, so you can lean in when obsessed? 3-It might be a goid side for board games but I much prefer to play RPGs on a table 4 feet by 5(or 6)feet. That allows a 2by3 Matt in the center and then each side of the table still has a foot for the players books/tablet/character sheet. I find buying 2 rectangular folding tables work well for such. I would caution people to get them with the folding legs NOT at the absolute ends but instead at least &6 inches from the edge, then you can get your legs under the table if you are on those ends.
I think i'll try this too! Just thinking about leaving the gap between the armrests and the underconstruction to slide in some cup holders or stuff like that. Also i like the idea of led's as someone mentioned, 'cause everyone knows that led's make everything better :D
I made a table like this last summer. The table I got is solid wood and I got it for free. It came out great. Cost me about €100 cause I used quality paint and laquer. Gaming mat was €12 and led strips were free. My table is bigger tho. Good video.
Don't know about your area, but here we can borrow most tools for free at the local library. (no table saw, unfortunately, but circular saw can do the job if you just measure more than once)
Nice! If you don't find a neoprene mat that's the right size or just don't want to use one, my daughter and I found success and fun with fabric instead. Simply wrap some batting (a fabric used for padding) followed by velour or felt (for a less luxurious but more affordable option alternative). Simply attach the fabric with spray on fabric glue, wrap around the edges, and staple from underneath. We used that method to make a topper instead and enjoyed it. Well... Until a night when I had drank a bit of umm... Water! Yeah, got to stay hydrated. Anyways, it didn't get put away properly and the cats tore it up like a scratching post. So, yeah. Make sure you make it inaccessible to animals. (Don't feel too sorry for us. We had fun building it together and my wife gave me a really nice neoprene mat as a gift for Christmas). Also, you could probably add cup holders with a hole saw and cup holder inserts. The inserts can be found online and stores that sell products for RVs, boats, and/or semis. If you already have a hole saw, that addition should only cost about $10-20 while preventing spills.
What is the ideal internal dimensions needed for "larger games" really? I play a lot of Marvel United with the (in my opinion) much needed 90cm diameter round playmat. ...so would a square (or rectangular) inner surface with at least 1m w + l do? I would love the big brother IKEA version created from you guys! :)
Seems to me that it would have been vastly easier to cut the top of the legs the quarter inch so they were flush with the apron. That would have, you know, lowered the table a bit (as discussed), and avoided the shim hack. Like, there was a table saw right there lol.

You know how some tables are like a bucket /a box on the underside? So, just flip the table over, and move the legs to where the table top would be, and BAM you have a board game table. Buy the same table again just for the top and BAM BAM you get a table topper too.

What do you think the material cost was besides the table? Because I feel like it could very easily match the $100 cost of the table alone.
You'd want a miter saw to cut 45s on the arm rests. You'd want a plywood blade or other high tooth count saw for your circular saw. Also, only have 1/8" ticking through and using masking tape to prevent chipping of plywood. It's not the saws fault, it's the blade and blade depth. Instead of the metal brackets, should have just run the side through the table sides to cut the grooves for the game bottom portion. There are dual blades for tablesaws just for this, or could do a router (saw is quicker). You can get instructions online for tables, and then just modify those designs. IKEA quality is really hit or miss, and I found all their tables a bit small to do this with as I'd want 6' x 4' minimum.
They should have just screwed a piece of plywood to the BOTTOM of the frame to avoid loosing so much space in the box. That choice kind of negated the whole benefit of repurposing the table.
