Since Manegna is mentioned in this video I'd like to add that he also painted dwarves. Actually in the Camera picta/camera degli sposi in the Duke's Palace of Mantova a female dwarf proudly stands among the Gonzaga family and courtesans, and she actually is the only person looking at "us". thanks for the video, I like the Perspective channel so much"

I watched this the other night and it got me thinking about my own situation; I was born with swarfism of the eyes 75 years ago. It's more cpmmonly known as Micro Ophthalmia or 'Small Eyes'. It's a rare condition affecting than 10 in every 1 million births in the UK. Ny eyes look like 2 slits unless you get up close and can see the eyes themselves. I'm classified as severely sight impaired due to this birth defect and I have to wear thick glasses as well. This birth defect has led to me leading a very lonely and isolated life on the margins of society.

I was hoping this doco would mention Joel Peter Witkin but the artists featured were fantastic.
There's a shortage of dwarfs in todays art !
And a surfeit in politicks.
There are four dwarves in Norse mythology that engage in a contest. They're all male but they're not greedy or silly. They are displayed as being smart, talented, gifted at magic and metal working. One actually punishes the scheming Loki by piercing his lips with an awl and sewing shut the trickster's mouth.
The supposed expert on fairy tales speaks about how all dwarfs in all cultures were evil, while having the book opened on a scene where the seven dwarfs are about to revive Snow White by lifting her *TENDERLY* (one could even see the exact word in the text above the illustration) and cutting her laces open and let her breathe (in the original story the evil queen tries to kill Snow White several times using various implements, tightly laced bodice being one of them). WHAT IS THIS WOMAN TALKING ABOUT? Why does an expert like that allow herself to stretch the facts to fit better the leading idea of this material (it's no longer a documentary for me if it consists of incorrect information). How would the story of Snow White and seven dwarfes who were her protectors and even life savers even make sense and be able to end well if they were evil? And even if somehow that was the case, the wide audience across the generations had never known them as evil or doing anything bad. One could of course argue they are portrayed in a caricatural way, but never as villains.
@@KikiFu technically the dwarves in snowwhite it rather based on mountainspirits/gnomes, in scandinavia we have the housegnomes/elves called Tomtar or tomtenissar, wich was i protective spirit of the farm and the animals. And the nordic santa claus, father christmas , is called julemanden/jultomten. wich is normally sized, but still an heir of the housegnome.
Being short is NOT a disability . It is an annoyance.
I think people's attitudes towards individuals who are born with the condition has improved greatly over the years. We don't have P.T. Barnum's entourage doing the rounds anymore and the public are far more aware of the underlying causes of 'dwarfism'.
That said, there will always be the comments and glances made behind backs but that's just human nature I suppose.

Honestly if someone looking different than others wasn’t looked at as a condition they would never get discriminated against or judged.
I think this documentary implies dwarfs are used and abused, not enjoyed and employed. That says more about the documentary maker than his subject.

Past ,present and future will always have the same attitude towards disabled people,the overwhelming vast majority of non disabled people will never integrate with them and that’s the sad reality whether we like it or not.
Could somebody please advise/educate me?
I thought that when referring to a group of little people, to people of restricted growth, or (more generally) to people with dwarfism, that the word “dwarf” was no longer used.
If someone could please let me know, I’d really appreciate it.

i don't know about "dwarf", but i think it's "midget" that is no longer used. it's mentioned here 40:10

I'm a dwarf and I prefer "dwarf" because I have a form of dwarfism. Please do not call us midgets. The word midget is deeply disrespectful to the majority of us.

She's pronouncing the word 'saytr' (say-ter) like the word 'satire.' Is that how it is supposed to be pronounced?
I noticed that as well. Certainly I've never heard it pronounced that way.
It wouldn't be the first time that the Brits butcher the original Greek names (like Μυκῆναι or Μυκήνη, Mykē̂nai or Mykḗnē and what the English language did with it turning it into the linguistic monstrosity you now call Mycenae) and call it the correct pronunciation, and then gasp when somebody actually looks at the original Greek term and makes an effort to pronounce it as the Greeks would.
The word Satyr stems from σάτυρος, translit. sátyros, pronounced [sátyros], and it's that lady that is pronouncing it closer to the correct form if anyone.

Hmm, I don't think fairy stories have anything to do with this. Tales of 'the Fae' are about a whole other realm of beings. Beings which some folk claim to see right up to, and including, the present day (be it real or imagined). To link 'Fae' with discriminatory images of Dwarfism is just wrong, and to me, pretty damn irritating... Not only does it confuse the issues being raised here, but also denigrates a whole other subject, quite unfairly.

How long before the word "disabled" or people with "disability" becomes politically incorrect.? To me, it actually is offensive. In this documentary for example I see a lot of people with plenty of abilities despite their genetic condition which affects their bone growth. Just like all "normal" people arguably lack abilities in certain areas as well.
