    As far as North America; you can rent a caravan or Class C camper van and be well ahead of the headache of insurance and registration and cost. And a bonus is the steering wheel is on the left side to fit the roads you would travel.

    I know someone up here in the Scottish Highlands that has an electric MAN camper. The problems that people dont see are that the cold weather kills the battery life, using the wipers drains the battery quicker, steep hills and carrying any sort of weight has a huge effect. In short, the industry is really not there yet.

      The further North you go the less fun they get. Mind you we were stunned to see so many electric vehicles in Norway. They have the money to support them though thanks to supplying the world with fossil fuels and electricity 👍

      All vehicles will use more fuel in hilly terrain. Manufacturers list winter range as lower within the other range changers such as city/urban and motorway driving, just like they do with other vehicles. And of course the ranges are polished to look great what ever type of fuel is used.

      @@LifeistooshortCK In 2021, Norway was the largest hydropower producing country in Europe, with some 144 terawatt-hours generated. @@curleycale8274 yes but starting with a three times larger range to start with, with ice vehicles, covers the problem much more readily and almost instant re-fuelling time adds to logistic suitability as well.

    I've build me a 100% electric campervan. Maxus EV80. Heatpump, airco, extra infrared heating in ceiling, floor and all walls, induction cooker, microwave/oven, electric water heater, electric water boiler, the lot. 1kw rooftop solar powers it all. CCS quickcharge when needed etc. Ultra silent, no smells, no noise, no oils, no filters, no stress. Works brilliant for us. Will never go back to combustion ever again.

    • @ruudopklompen3034
      @ruudopklompen3034 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh yes, the mining issue... Not many realise for instance that there is more cobalt needed for hardening steel parts (pistons/bearings etc) in combustion engines as there is needed for car batteries. And more lithium needed for glass and home-window production in this world then for car batteries etc. Mining for oil doesn't seem the lesser evil anymore when we're able to (self)produce our fuel from wind, water and sun most of the time, over and over again.
      Maybe we do open a channel and show and explain how and why electric camping is actually the way to go. Well, for us at least...

    I am surprised that there is so much negativity about using electric vehicles. I have an EV which is clean, efficient, and comfortable. I use it to pop down to the shops, to do medium range trips in the 15 to 40 mile range, and longer journeys from where we live on the central south coast up to Birmingham, Sheffield, and Wales. We are really only restricted by the need to get back to work! As Carol said, it does take some planning, but there's plenty of information easily available. It is true that it can be difficult to find a charger in a convenient location if you get low on fuel, but that can also apply to petrol stations too. Networks are expanding very rapidly and the maintenance which used to be a bit dire is improving too. I know there are a many environmental issues associated with the manufacture of EVs but I think that if no one buys EVs because of these issues then no one will bother finding solutions to the problems. I bought my EV because I care deeply about environmental issues. I know that there are multitudes of ways in which I can do my bit, but, because I am fortunate enough to have inherited sufficient money to buy a very expensive car, I can take pride in my choice to do what I can keep our air clean, and I look forward to the time when I can sell it on as a second hand vehicle, giving someone else a chance too. And, full disclosure, I have an old Toyota Yaris hybrid at home and on the one occasion that I had to do a long trip reliably and swiftly I simply left my EV at home and used the Toyota because I knew I wouldn't have to refill the tank.

      Sadly electric vehicles are not green as it’s clear to see the damage the battery production causes. The question posed was could we do what we have been doing in an electric van and I don’t think the technology and infrastructure is there yet. When the weather is bad and we need to hunker down for a couple of days the first thing I do is top up the diesel, not because we are driving anywhere in bad weather but because that diesel is our emergency backup if our gas heating packs up and the engine is our emergency generator if the leisure battery gets too low.

    • @stevezodiac491
      @stevezodiac491 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a technology to get widespread acceptance, there has to be generally perceived benefits, for the individual buying it, that what went before. I have owned an electric vehicle for over 7 years and it is clearly not as logistically able as an ice car and people are not prepared to put up with that and with an extra £10k extra price to buying one, for the privilege to do so. It makes no sense to the public buying an EV as for the very few people, who place environmental issues at the top of the priority list but as we all know all cars are not environmentally friendly. If you want to be that person, buy a push bike.

I used to live in Canada and if you want to see horrific damage, look at the tar sands in Alberta compared to Lithium mining in Canada. The mining I feel is a bit of a red herring. @@tiepup I live in the UK.
      I also drive a 7 ton electric Luton as part of my job.
      I can guarantee you that you cannot just roll around the UK in an electric van without planning. My firm held back on electric vehicle expansion due to charging issues and availability (and we have rapid chargers in our car park), and the loss of range in cold weather and heavy vehicles. Up to 50% loss in advertised ranges.
      Maybe sodium batteries will change that, but then again, some car manufacturers are betting the hydrogen or biofuel issues will be solved before battery technology progresses. It's unicorn and fairy theory at the moment.
      Even less likely going off grid, in remote areas, to achieve any of this, compared to a diesel vehicle.

    • @hughjasse3375
      @hughjasse3375 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tiepup These are the familiar talking points that are ideological more than scientific.
      I don't think this is the channel for this debate. Companies like Caterpillar, Toyota and VW would not be expressing concerns about mass EV adoption, whilst still developing hydrogen and biofuels as a long term, likely winner. There are potential, easy ways to generate blue or green hydrogen, and biofuels. And renewables are heavily subsidised, despite the denials. If you research. They aren't particularly "green" or "renewable", if you look into batteries, turbines, solar panels and electrical cable distribution, in the real world.
      You are welcome to your opinion, but research a bit to understand why these mega corporations, and others, express fears and doubts on the issue.
      Forcing people into EVs, without the technology available, is just a way to force people off the road, using quasi religious rhetoric. It could be a catastrophic mistake, if the market is not allowed to work.
      You should contact Glynn (who is very pro renewables), to tell him his videos documenting charging strategies on road trips is useless. He's done plenty within the UK.
      I drive an electric truck for business. It's OK if you're retired and pottering around with all the time in the world. When you need to be at certain points by certain times, electric is hopless. Fine for the middle of town.
      No way I would go off grid in a 5-6 ton electric motorhome. Probably fine to go between touring parks (if they have rapid chargers), but that wouldn't be for me.
      You're welcome to your opinion, but you haven't given me anything to change my experience or research.
      Also check your future motoring - Nissan have discontinued those models, and chademo charging systems will be obsolete within the next five years for your vehicle. Your batteries are likely out of warranty now (if you own them - most EVs are sold with rented batteries and 3 year warranty). 5-6k to replace, but you'll still have an obsolete rapid charging system. And the batteries are not renewable when they die, at the moment, and hence why there is no willing market in 2nd hand EV dealers. Resale has become a serious problem amongst used dealers. Essentially, EVs have become a throwaway, consumer market, like a very large, expensive iPhone. Not very green.
      The market hopefully will decide.

(Our dream to travel) When you compare travelling in a caravan to a camper van and then talk about electric vehicles it would be like going backwards in terms of caravan travel and planning because you’d have to make sure your journey is mapped out regarding recharging and would make travelling more stressful. I recently watched a guy in his electric car get stuck in the snow and couldn’t find a charger that was working. He basically said he could have come unstuck because he was freezing. He said he was getting rid of his electric car and wouldn’t recommend them. He’s on TH-cam talking about his experience. Anyway, thanks to you both. A couple of years ago, I looked into buying an all electric campervan. However, there were only a few that kitted out all electric campers. I also looked into purchasing an electric car, but with no off road parking, and only one public ev charging station in a town of 30K population, it was not really viable. Therefore, I put both ideas on hold. I have gone all electric at home though. Heat pump system to replace the gas combi boiler, and solar panels fitted on the roof. Energy company even charged me an extortionate £148 to disconnect the gas supply. There has definitely got to be a change to using electric vehicles and running all electric homes etc, but with anything new, there are always advantages and disadvantages. Lithium mines.........think back to such all the coal mines, iron mines, lead mines, and all the lost lives in those mines, so lithium mines are not much different, but at least mining techniques & machinery, etc.,have vastly improved. Only a few years ago, lots of people were all for the fracking here in Lancashire. However, those of us that felt the resulting shock waves in our homes, were definitely against fracking. As I say, lots of advantages and disadvantages for anything new..........humans don't like change lol.

    I have two induction stoves (portable units) - works fine with my batteries & inverter. Powering this from the on board inverter of an EV is usually limited to 2kW, so yes, it would be unwise to run two.
    EV's will also not work well in Australia where I live. The little charging infrastructure we have are on major routes and cities - precisely the locations/routes I am trying to get away from when camping.

    Okay - flying the BEV banner now... Battery technology is advancing apace and those with 7-yr-old cars would hardly recognise the newer versions. I recommend to everyone, if they are at all interested and genuinely so, the channels Fully Charged (for vehicles) and Everything Electric (for off-grid and feed to grid home power). I leave it to them to do what they do excellently - tell it how it is and how it is reasonably expected to be over the next few years,
    It is a paradigm shift in thinking, Here's the thing... if you are going to drive 300 to 500 miles in one hit, then, yeah, diesel might be the go. But seriously, how many here are going to undertake endless driving like that? Is it not the case that one requires a break in driving every couple of hours; to take in the views, to shop for various things; just to rest, refresh, revive? And how far, realistically, is one likely to have gone in that time when travelling as you do? Fifty, sixty, maybe a hundred miles?
    Availability of chargers is increasing as well (though that could be faster); more and more purpose built multiunit stations are appearing (there's one just along the road from where I sit now) but the point for most owners is that their vehicles are to be charged AT HOME. If one is touring, even with an ICE vehicle, is it not the case that one has to plan where one can obtain fuel? How is that any different?
    Yes there are variations in power in cold weather, but again, the tech is catching on and working through that. Oh, and there are plenty twin-hob induction cooktops, Ken. It's just that most van users are - like yourself - one-pot cooks; when was the last time you actually used both hobs in your van?
    I type this from my B&B in Glasgow; tomorrow I go to look at, and hopefully buy, a Ford E-Transit. Yes, fully electric van. Watch out for reports from the "Light" side!!! YAM xx

    I’ve often wondered if those that have purchased EV s often gloss over the cons to help justify their outlay to themselves (?) City dwellers have probably less issues than I have in the mountainous region of Wales with very few charging facilities. Andrew Ditton actually tours towing a

    I pay $85 each month to store my bus. Renting a camper van is more expensive than renting a large RV because they are so fashionable. Not discounting the advantages of a camper van, I just keep watching them go up while other camper/travel vehicles go down or stay the same. I checked, last week, and they ran from $129 - >$200 per night. Plus something like $.35 per mile over your allotment which was ridiculously low. 50 miles per pay including your return back. The place I wanted to go was 189 miles away, which isn’t far in my book. Because there is a campground at the final destination, I would save money by driving an30ft RV. You don’t save on gas renting/buying a van vs an RV unless you are comparing gas vs diesel. You COULD enter and depart from Canada and some of the restrictions or hoops won’t be such a challenge. I don’t believe that you have similar concerns driving across the US Border into Canada as you won’t have bought it along the way. I read the import/export laws and tax laws until my head implodes. I don’t have an interest in your choice, I am simply sharing what I discovered just a week ago. Having said ALL of that, there was ONE VW Westfalia on the site for $89 per night. I thought about it but I don’t think I tallied it up.

    On the subject of range manufacturers state one thing but tests show over hyped Ssangyong (now KG mobility) have a new all electronic Torris they say 320miles Korean gove test 290 so not good.

    If you have a vehicle that’s paid for and gets 20 mpg and drive 12,000 miles a year you will spend $2400 a year on gas at $4 a gallon.
    If you buy an EV for $40,000 and drive the same 12,000 miles a year it will take you 16.6 years to break even ($40,000 divided by $2400 savings a year)
    In that time you will have to replace the battery pack at around $14,000 at least once.
