@@scarocci7333 MTW2 is too colorful it makes it sometimes seem almost a Renaissance game not one set in the middle ages. Look, I like the colors because they give a nice atmosphere overall but it's way more fake and holywoodish compared to MTW1. MTW captured the vibes of the middle ages way better than MTW2. MTW2 is still a great game, though. I like MTW2 and I'm not bashing it, just to be clear because I want to avoid misunderstandings.
Besides, I would like to see MTW1 and Shogun 1 being remastered someday in the future. Could that ever happen?

For everyone who needs to know how to make the game work decently on Steam, just follow those steps:
1)click right mouse on the MTW Gold icon on dekstop, then go to properties
    2) Go on compatibility mode and click Windows XP Service pack2
    3) Click on "Run as administrator" and the game will work quite well. Some crashes, but you can deal with that quick saving every 2 turns

I love this game as hell, playing it for 13 years but never stopped and I am still playing it, for a 2002 game it's an insane masterpiece for the technology and the mediocre budget CA had back then! I am currently play a GA campaign with Genoese on BKB super mod and playing it on expert to make things nasty... MTW2 is amazing of course as it is RTW and newer tota war games, I love them all actually, love their mechanics, good options, diplomatic system, sieges, battles and many things but they doesn't capture the depth, atmosphere, balancement, challenge and feeling of the first MTW. It's like more complexity but without make the engine and AI use them properly and giving less options and less depth (altough RTW and MTW2 are still very deep they are great indeed) but 1 has something special, don't know how to explain it in simple words... Medieval 1 is a gem... No other total war can't match how good MTW was and still is, thanks to it's style, atmosphere, simple but great map (with AI that works), long glorious battles, historicity, the details, portraits, soundtrack, colors, the art stye, the many features that MTW2 brought back, everything mixing depth and simplicity together...a perfect compromise... same for movement and game design much better than on MTW2...this game helped me to see the world differently, to help me learn history and I love history and strategy games thanks to this game! At the time when I played warcraft 3 and American Conquest I thought nothing could be better and more deep and complete than these games! But when I discovered MTW bought it from a now defunct store for 10 euros, than this game blew me away when I first started it for the first time on my PC! It's so good and it was fucking revolutionary for me, perfect!
Medieval 2 and Rome were already around but I was happy with MTW only without expansion and even without any patch! Just played it proudly being the 'poor boy' at the time with not much money for newer computers and games, but I was still happy and this game blow my mind, another games I enjoyed at this time were of course american conquest, port royale, age of empires 2, Warcraft 3 with its expansion frozen throne, Sim City 3, Serious Sam 1 and Europa Universalis the first one! these with MTW1 were my hours and hours of life spent playing them. Then I started to work gain money and of course I bought better PC and managed to play newer total war and other newer games (especially rts games). But that's another story.
One day if all will go as I planned when I will have my small indie developer team (I have programming experience) and a reasonable budget then we will make our own engine from the scratch (our own engine created by me and my future team mates with our own copiright, source code, rights and rules) and with that remake MTW unoficially with a pretty similar medieval game (with other name of course for not have issues) with same style map system , atmosphere, better gameplay, same movement system, similar but BETTER interface but better, modern graphics and more realistic and bigger battles & siege system, modern diplomacy, politics, economy, new mechanics and other new original features with more units, factions, regions, resources, agents etc. All with our own future code engine (not CA's, but only OUR own engine of course) it will take time but It's my goal and for what I'm working on! I will make my dream come true! The game will be also very moddable so people can mod it and make it even better.... this is how MTW for me and many people had to be originally! But once this will finally come true, just patience MTW and total war fans! Everything need time and patience in life, but everything is achievable of course.
    All the best!
    Max

The majority of the people prefers medieval 2 due to the fact the game has better graphics, diplomacy, good sieges and a simple but very fun gameplay combined with very good mods. I like both the games equally, maybe I prefer the first one but anyway by a small margin. Medieval 1 was really gritty and dark, it really brought the feel of the dark ages: plague, torture, violence, death, betrayal, greed, hunger for power, religious opression, inquisition and so on. The music really reflect that. The medieval atmosphere is much better implemented than MTW2, as the music. Many good features were missed after Medieval 1: civil wars, incest, henrit land from princess, Tough castle breech with boiling oil, valour bonus for provinces, region and faction leader isolation penalty, faction Re-emergence, faction which emerge during 1300 (Swiss, Burgundians), gunpowder worked well, the game was more balanced and realistic, Cold War stacks which generated in few but big and decisive battles, instead of 100 multi small stacks, with 100 boring battles as MTW2 vanilla, the strategic special missions for agents, the titles and office, every unit has a proper general, not just family heirs... you can kill your own faction members, you can use inquisitor the way it pleases you even burning your own generals, the King traits affect the WHOLE kingdom (not just the region which he administrate), historical campaign and different eras starting dates.... and a lot more.... This game is really complex and polished, only few M2TW mods can match MTW 1 in terms of gameplay.

@@MsSirAndy Thanks to both of you. I already knew about the resolution thing, but the problem is that you get reduced frame rates during battles, and turns take longer and longer to process, despite their being fewer factions remaining. It gets to a point where the enemies start throwing armies made up of whatever trash they can throw at you, and the battles go on for ages because of the constant stream of reinforcement units. You end up saving manually before each turn ends just in case. Eventually, the game crashes. Shogun had the same problem, but to a lesser extent - you only saw it if a campaign went on much longer than normal.

@@MsSirAndy I'm not sure whether they're updating the Steam versions. I noticed that sieges cause attrition now, which was not the case with my original copy. It would require more than a remaster, though - you'd have to dig into the engine to fix things like unit information not being removed from memory. The trouble is that the original TW engine was originally designed for sports games, and therefore had far fewer entities in play at once.
I also noticed that assassinations had been reworked, so that you could train up higher valour units from scratch rather than having to risk them at lower levels. I miss the Shogun TW animations though - any remaster would have to include something similar, not to mention the throne room.
