Between her and Abuela from Encanto, Disney is doing a pretty good job at reminding us that sometimes, your direct family members will be the worst villains you have to face IRL.

Ming Lee shows that overprotectiveness can result in rebellion as much as not being there. As Mei said, " If they dont trust us anyway, then what's the point?"
For some reason, some of the parents didn't like the film bc they thought the message of the movie was to teach kids to rebel when really the message was that if you don't allow your child enough free will, then they can and will rebel against their parents
It's a cycle. Ming has the same relationship issues with Mei as she does with her mom/Meis grandma, who was strict on her which caused her rebel to keep her relationship with Mei's dad which the grandma didn't like. Even though she did rebel against her mom, being overly strict and stern was the only parenting style Ming ever learned, so it caused it to pass on to her relationship with Mei, though thankfully she broke it and now the family, has a better relationship for it.
As an Asian with a horrible mother who did all of this, I'm SOOO GLADD TO FINALLLY FIND PEOPLE NOT EXCUSING HER BEHAVIOR BECAUSE OF HER SAD PAST--- LOOK-- JUST BECAUSE YOU UNDERSTAND SOMEONES BAD ACTIONS DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO LIKE THAT PERSON OR IDOLIZE THEM XDD

No no it happens when you're the oldest child too. And on top of getting this exact treatment you also get to watch your parents treat your younger siblings completely differently. They're allowed to do whatever they want, they're allowed to make mistakes, they get away with everything because even at age 18 and over they'll always be "so young, they just don't know better" but you at the ripe age of 5, already needed to show the example because you're bigger than them, you know better.
Soooo nobody's gonna talk about "Introduction to the Snow" at 0:26? We love to see Hawaii: Part II getting more recognition! Hilarious video btw! The editing is amazing
Honestly, I feel like people saying Ming is a bad mom aren’t watching the movie very well. Don’t get me wrong she’s very very overbearing and suffocating, but overall she does love Mei. She was just to scared to have her daughter be something she deemed bad, but sometimes you have to let the baby bird leave the nest. Mei and Ming’s relationship was stronger then before at the end of the movie, because Mei didn’t have to try and be something she’s not
She started letting Mei do stuff freely at the end of the movie when she finally realized that Mei is getting older and is able to make many decisions on her own.
You can love your kid and also be a bad parent, they're not mutually exclusive. I'm not necessarily saying Ming is an awful mom but just because you aren't beating your kids or something doesn't mean what you're doing isn't harming them.
@@kakyoinsearings7036 But she isn’t a bad mom? A bad mom is a mom who doesn’t care for their kid, Ming cares for mei more then anyone. At the end of the movie she became better
Ming is just overall toxic and overprotective of mei and is way too overbearing and toxic towards her own daughter… the least she could do is understand why mei wants to be around her friends or go to 4 town 😢🥺
