    I live in the USVI(Virgin Islands) and after Hurricane Maria hit in 2017 I bought this radio for the house because we were without power for months. My sister couldn't figure out how to use it. She’s a senior. I was going to give it away but I like it. I am going off-island for a few months but when I come back shi h will be in the midst of hurricane season I will listen to this TH-cam tutorial.

    Thanks for the review todderbert. My experience with the Eton Field BT is that it's great on FM and SW and the lower half of AM. It is increasingly deaf as I tune upwards from about 1000 or 1100 kHz. The AGC needs improvement, when moving from weak stations to strong stations, I have to turn the volume up and down to make up for the ineffective AGC. It looked like you had the same issue when tuning from 650 to 700 kHz. I also don't like the muting.
    I ended up trading it to my brother for a CC Radio SW. He wanted the FM RDS and I wanted the superb AM of the CC SW. We are both happy. One thing I really like about the Field BT is the great audio and the unique display which is the same as my Eton Executive Satellite.

    What an awesome radio with so many features including external antenna jacks in case the telescopic antenna ever breaks. Good value for the price, even without SSB. Two thumbs for the review. 👍👍

    The features on his radio are similar to the C.Crane CC Radio SW. The MW performance of the C.Crane CC Radio SW with the twin coil ferrite antenna is better. Also on the C.Crane CC Radio SW it is nice to be able to use either AA or D size rechargeable batteries and the radio will recharge the batteries.

    I don't know why Grunding/Eton manufactured this big robust radio and left out SSB, Weather, and Air Control frequencies. And also memory presets, as you pointed out. It's like they're saying "You want all that, go buy the C Crane Skywave." I don't like the small size of the Skywave, but it does cover all the bases.

    I have this radio and the FM reception is just incredible! AM is great too, very sensitive and the bluetooth function is great, and it does have excellent sound quality in general but it doesn't go very loud in terms of volume, particularly in a crowd but that's ok it's not a boombox or a party speaker.

    • @todderbert

      That FM reception took me by surprise. Very impressed, the MW isn't half bad either.

    Hey Todd, I just finished watching your video it was very informative, and thank you for that. I just bought this radio as a gift to my dad. He's in his late 70's and really slowing down now. I grew up surrounded with Grundig radios around the house. My dad is very fond of his Grundig radios so I know he will love this one. I think he only has a couple left. The other ones either died or he gave away. It was funny just today I was talking to my mom on the phone and I can hear him in the background telling me to buy him a Grundig radio, haha. I just have to spend some time with him so he can learn how to use this particular model. I'm kinda of bummed out that this one doesn't have the 110-240 voltage adapter only 110v. And some kind of travel case would of been nice to go along with it, after all it is a Grundig. Again your review was very informative and thank you very much!

    Nice! I have had this radio for about 18 months. I actually do use mine in conjunction with another little radio that has mp3 recording capabilities to record late night talk on FM... The only problem I`ve had is that the treble knob kept sliding out until I lost it. I have to plug Eton`s customer service. I sent them an email about it and within 24 hours they contacted me back asking for an address to send a new knob. I put a little locktite on it.... I also learned early on to use the AC cord. If you listen to it a lot, it goes through those big D batteries fairly fast. But yeah, Its a great radio.... Something that you may be interested in- I believe it was on SWLING, I read an article, about a couple of modes that a fellow done on this radio. One was to put a longer ferrite antenna in it that he scavenged from another radio for excellent MW reception. I have not done this yet. My daddy told me one time "If it ant broke, dont fix it" and I found out the hard way, at least in that one instance, He was right, lol.

      I found the web page that I referred to earlier. radiojayallen.com/etongrundig-field-550-ngwfb/ He tells step by step along with photos how he done the mods. He calls it "Hot rodding the Field". He replaced the 5.4" ferrite antenna with an 8" twin coil ferrite antenna from a Sangean PR-D5 . He also Installed a different speaker (mine sounds good as it is) and a couple more mods. Just FYI in case anyone may come across this and is interested..... I found it interesting and informative.

    Todderbert I read about an update to this radio on radio jay allen. After the improvements he discussed and reviewed, I decided to give it another go. I got it brand new/unopened for $65 shipped on eBay from a trusted seller in California, I received it in 2 days.
    As mentioned in my original reply 6 months ago, I traded my original Field BT Grundig Edition to my brother for a CC Radio SW which I dearly love. I just received my new BT Field today and scanned through the bands. The easiest way to tell the difference is the radio now just shows "Field BT" logo in the upper right corner and Eton on the grille. There is no longer Grundig Edition logo across the top front panel.
    Internally, it now has a built in 3-way speaker which sounds awesome. There is now a shield over the DSP chip which vastly reduces spurious noises. I don't hear any digital noise on AM that I heard on the original. Tuning is a bit smoother, Eton made some modification to the tuning encoder, there is less noticeable backlash. Finally, the AM reception discrepancy between the bottom and upper half is much improved. It's still there but nowhere near as weak on the upper end above 1000 kHz. I suspect maybe a better AGC circuit but I'm not sure. Bluetooth is easy to use as before.
    I like this radio, FM is superb! Shortwave is as good as any portable in the price range. It is terrific for program listening. I'm going to keep this one.

      I read that too on Jays website. This might be my next purchase. If Grundig can make a 5 star radio for medium wave DX listeners, add SSB, and Air band without sacrificing quality. I'd be more than willing to drop $200 on one. The Bluetooth option can be dropped if needed to get SSB and air band. Grundig, can you do it...?? Additionally, I'd like to see a AM band scan of this radio ( the newer version ) during the evening hours.

    I’m looking for the “ultimate” portable fm dxer, that matches or betters stock car stereos. Jay Allen rates this “as good as it gets” category. I’m curious as how well this does, compared to the C.C radio EP Pro as far as Fm performance goes. As of yet, I have not heard of any radio that is better for dxing Fm radio reception, than stock car stereos. For some reason, they excel at that, like no other radio. I’m hoping for the day, they can finally get portables to match. What’s your take on this Tobb?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FM Radios in cars are great, and hard to match. They are portable, but hard to take into the woods, bed, ect ;) I like the Sangean line of radios for FM reception. The best portable radio I have tested is the Sangean PR-D12. It is super sensitive, and selective on the FM Band.

    • @chloecastleton6113
      @chloecastleton6113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@todderbert thank you for your reply.
      I should mention that I have many radios
      Sangean PR-DW4
      C.C EP pro
      C.C skywave SSB
      Sangean PR-D5
      GE super radio 2
      (2) Panasonic 2200
      A few tecsun’s and small pocket radios
      They are all good on FM, but I’m searching for the “holly grail”. I’m looking to buy one more radio and be done with it. I was looking at this Elton/Grundig OR the C.C radio 2E / 3E. Since I have a few Tecsun radios, the 502x is on hold.
      Stock car stereo decks have always been outstanding, for dxing the FM band. Nothing has compared to how sensitive or selective they are. It’s the one (and only) strength they have over aftermarket radios. I regret pulling my stock deck everyday, but having the sound quality and flexibility to run Bluetooth, amps, etc just overshadows the outstanding radio of stock decks.

    Is there any difference between the Grundig edition and the Eaton edition radio? Apart from the name. I am thinking about importing one from eBay to the UK, this is quite an expensive prospect with import duties and postage, so I want to buy the correct version. I mainly want FM reception which I think this one does very well. You mentioned the Prd19 by Sangean but I like a tuning dial. Cheers in advance. Also is 85 dollars too much for a tidy Grundig field? It is 150ish with shipping and duty.

    Could you use, as an antenna, an old unused satellite dish?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nope, possibly a TV antenna on the roof for VHF(FM). Satellite is at a higher frequency that the Field does not support.

      Try pressing the Alarm button on the station you want to save, then use the arrow up and down buttons to pick a slot, after you choose the slot press the Alarm button again to confirm. You have 10 presets per band. That is 10 on FM, AM, SW1, SW2 & SW3. After your done storing stations use the Preset key to bring them up and keep tapping the preset key to cycle through them.

    Can you please recommend me a good external antenna for this radio , or do you think with the internal antennas it's more than enough ?? I'm planning on using more for sw radio Thank you

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a substantial whip antenna which will work great outside. Indoors I use my 23' Kaito T-1 Wire antenna strung outside to my balcony. There are better solutions, but I try to keep things very portable and simple. If you find MW lacking, the Tecsun AN-200 will help the boost gain of those signals.

      @@blackhat1894 You would have to extend the whip antenna and I think you will still get decent reception if near a window.

    Is grundig still a company or has eton or someone else bought them out?

    • @1_lens_view
      @1_lens_view 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The company that manufactured SW radios is long gone. The brand is owned by a Turkish company and remains as a line of home appliances and other consumer products in Europe. I think we had a microwave by that name while living in London.
      Eton, who I think was a distributor of real Grundig radios back in the day, licensed the Grundig name for use on their own products here in North America. I’m wondering if that deal has expired, as I have not seen the Grundig name on anything recent.

    Have you plugged it into mains power? Mine worked for 10-15min and suddenly stopped. Then I realized that the power supply was smoking. I took it off unplugged the 7VDC connector from the radio and put it back on the mains power (just the power supply not the radio). I thought it was dead but the power supply (1500mA) was actually working! The radio on the other hand wasn't. I powered the radio with another (reversible polarity) 7VDC power supply and nothing. It must have burned a diode or something. I tried on batteries and it was working fine. I ordered a new one but I'm not gonna power this one with the original power supply (which is a transformer inside four diodes and a couple of capacitors on a small circuit board). I think I will create a USB cable with reversed polarity and use it on the radio on a 2Amp power supply.
