  • Google has been releasing features this year as part of its Smart Canvas initiative. One that caught my eye recently was around a native timeline view for Google Spreadsheets data. Do you think it will be useful? What features would you like to see?

Can these feature translate onto your calendar once they are set. i.e. Start date to End date and bench marks in between?

It can be done with a bit of Apps Script. I can't say *how* because it's in my list of things I want to learn. 😉

Please tell me they will add a calendar feature soon, where you can then add them directly to your calendar

    This is amazing. But .... but .... SmartSuite🙂🙂...Airtable 🤔🙂
Timelines in Spreadsheets may be useful for a lot of use cases possibly, but I don't see how Spreadsheets can be used for project/task management where TimeLines are mostly used!
SpreadSheets will stay forever and mainly be used for calculations and formula heavy use cases and never replace a relational database.
    Any other thoughts?

I'm with you, I think tools like SmartSuite/Airtable offer so much more functionality. Google Sheets isn't going to get there any time soon, nor do I expect that they want to compete in that space.
But, I can think of many circumstances where it would be 5x easier for me to set up a quick Google sheet, simply because every person at the orgs I have worked for are already licensed for GSuite/MS Office, but usually only a subset of the company has been licensed for a no-code tool. Hoping that will change in the future!

I agree on the ability to drag and resize. I was thinking of getting Aeon timeline but my workplace has this feature so I think I'll just use that for some personal projects as well...

Yes, it can definitely be useful for some lightweight projects. I'm interested to see what new feature developments we'll see in this space for 2023.

I thought this was IT, the scheduler I've been waiting my entire life... and then learned it doesn't have the drag and resize functionality... what a let down. Hope they will add it sooner.
Also was hoping for Google Table to have something like this as well.
    Keep on improving Google!

Thank you for posting this. Does Google Sheets also allow you to have only one 24-hour period (not multiple days)? Thereby enabling a timeline for specific times within one 24-hour day. Thank you again!
