    Hunt knew of what he spoke. Not only had he won the World Championship in 1976 for McLaren using a Cosworth DFV engine, but during the 1980's he had tested turbo cars for McLaren, Williams and Brabham. He had also as recently as a couple of months before the 1989 Monaco GP tested the Williams Renault. He knew that driving the atmo cars was far easier than driving one of the turbos.

      @@christianponicki9581 Arnoux had half a dozen or so wins and a few podium finishes in the turbo era but that is hardly conclusive that turbo cars were easier to drive. Naturally aspirated engines, certainly back in the 1970s/1980s, had vastly superior throttle response and driveability compared to turbocharged engines i.e. power delivery was more progressive.

    • @sam21462
      @sam21462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thestaggy - Yeah, you might want to study your history a bit more. Minding your rubber and your engine has always been a major part of F1. At their best, F1 cars live on the edge of destroying themselves and it has always been a major test of a driver's ability to extract everything they can from the car without destroying it. I do agree that the tire thing has gotten a bit absurd (thanks, Bernie) but it has always been there. It was possibly even more of a challenge back in the skinny tire era.

    I believe what Arnoux was meaning/implying was that he could handle the turbo lag/boost better than most other competitors (He was a VERY good driver in the 70's and early 80's) but now that the engines are n/a, he didn't have the advantage anymore and it was more of a level playing field- everyone is closer to the 'median' lap time (less deviation between drivers without the turbo) so the typically slow are slightly more competitive and the faster teams/drivers are more limited. In other words; he lost his edge without the turbo.

    Classic. The official F1 channel put a bleep in there, which absolutely loses the sheer bluntness of James, and diminishes the brilliance of Murray's unflappable response. Censorship is a crime and this video is a lovely reminder of the F1 we use to know and love.

    To Arnoux's credit, his entire career has been on turbo only.
    Whether it was the yellow teapots of the Renaults, the turbo powered Ferrari, and the turbo powered Ligier until turbos were banned for 1989.
    But Hunt's commentary is still gold.
