    I have seen the B2 once. At the last Bob Hope air show in Stockton CA in the late 90s. It flew over really low the air field so everyone could see it. How low, let's just say a quarterback could have thrown rocks at the plane and hit it. Once I and everyone else there saw it, you couldn't help but be mesmerize. If one didn't know that this was a man made plane it could be easily mistaken for a alien craft. It is literally a giant boomerang but so smooth and flat. It is truly a beautiful and amazing looking plane and I am so glad I got to see one.

      Went to college not far from Whiteman AFB, where these are stationed and they used to fly over the stadium for games and I remember having one overfly my backyard and by the time I realized there was an airplane flying over me it was on its way out of town. The way they fly and the tech they use to hide this thing means that you don't hear or see it until it's far too late to respond other than looking at it slack jawed. I remember I heard something but didn't know it was an airplane and even if I had known I probably couldn't have predicted its direction of flight. Also, I remember thinking, "damn, that's a big effing plane;" videos don't do it justice.

    Iraq 2005. Not much sleeping took place on the inbound flight. The return flight was another story. We departed Iraq in the early hours of dawn, then raced the sun to just after sunset in the states. It was about 20 hrs of daylight I had had never encountered. Naturally, everyone was happy to return to "burgers/potato salad/pepsies" but still hand to wrestle with not being "on guarde" after the flight was over. Incidentally, we were in the air when 2005 New Year broke and returned 4 days before Christmas that year. The holidays kept us focused.

    For long missions, they have a cot which is set up in the corridor behind the seats. Pilots rotate sleeping on the cot. There isn't a mission I can think of where both pilots need to be awake for the full 33 hours. They both need to be in their seats for high workload and safety-critical parts of the mission, e.g. when taking off, landing, and when refueling, ingressing, dropping bombs, and egressing a combat zone. They carry plenty of water (the flight deck air is very dry) to prevent dehydration, and rations as appropriate.

    I saw what I believe were two stealth type aircraft while I operating a freight aircraft between Auckland and Christchurch, NZ on a clear moonless night in the late 1990s. I was in a turboprop at 18,000 feet heading almost due south when I spotted above and ahead a long period strobe travelling in the opposite direction with the apparent speed of a commercial jet aircraft at altitude. I pointed it out to my copilot and then he spotted another one behind and to the side of the lead. I asked the radar controller what was the traffic above but she had no returns on either the secondary or primary radar. She stared that the primary head at both Christchurch and Wellington should give. The next day I spoke to an ex military pilot friend who thought the long period strobe was typical of military aircraft. The reason they would be showing any lights is to keep each other in sight. I’m guessing a refuelling aircraft was waiting for them somewhere. The NZ controlled airspace ended at 46,000 feet and they may have been above that but where does NZ sovereignty end. The US would be most displeased with foreign aircraft arriving unannounced. They may have had NZ government permission but I doubt it.

    From the article:”He probably should have taken the opportunity to unstrap from his seat and stretch out in the back of the cockpit. The space there is occupied by a toilet, a microwave oven, and typically a couple of Styrofoam coolers containing food the pilots pack for themselves. It allows just enough room for an average-size man to lie down. Managing sleep on long-duration flights is a crucial part of the job. Some crews bring a cot for the purpose, and others roll out a camping pad. For this flight, the commander didn’t even try.”

    • @PoochAndBoo
      @PoochAndBoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dra, those escort missions to Germany were 6 hours long, sometimes as much as 8. That doesn't require a nap when you're 20 years old. They were nowhere near as long as modern missions. That much time in the tight confines of a fighter did sometimes mean that your muscles were so stiff that you had to be lifted out of the cockpit. The Escort pilots who shepherded B-29's to Japan had it even worse, but still, not 30 hours!

      They've done some stunts back in the cold war days to show off. There is a story I heard if I remember correctly where they flew to England and the destination was fogged in so they turned around called for a tanker and few back to the States. They got back said what the hell let's just fly back and then got fogged in again. At which point they came up with the idea to just see how many times they could fly back and forth. I want to say they did it some 6-8 times. Really the main limitation to how long an aircraft can stay aloft is how full the shitter gets. Engine oil is the next main limitation, since it can't be serviced in the air on most aircraft.

      You get paid and appreciated by how much responsibility you have. Its like that in every job basically. These guys are up in the atmosphere in a billion dollar aircraft of which only 20 exist. If you burn the toast im pretty sure you can grab another slice of bread

    This seems so interesting but the robo-voice takes me out of it. It's probably the biggest problem I have with the present. Seems like people younger than me don't mind robo voices but they're to the point for me where I can barely get through the first minute of a video.
