A musical and historic presentation all in one. Dr. Alexander is an excellent and outstanding musician and composer in the same class as Dr. Billy Taylor, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Kenny Barron, and the many other brilliant jazz musicians whose talents we highly respect.

If you are not familiar with it yet, after hearing Monty Alexander's music, and after seeing this great documentary film, you are sure to go "coconuts and bananas" over it! ... Hats off and Bravo, to the Greenberg Brothers! :0 👏🏻

Wow ! I just have discoverd your album : Monk would have been so proud by your work : i think you respect a lot the Monk Spirit (specially the typcial sens of rythm) and in the same time you re-create the music with rasta vibes ! Im in love with your work ! (Monk is one of my heroes ;) )

And it never hurts to have a little New Orleans thrown into the mix

Great to see this. The reworkings sound really nice. I recall reading in Miles' autobiography how he felt Monk's music 'reminded him of the West Indian music being played today', so it's fascinating to hear about the Caribbean influences that directly informed Monk's work.

I think Monk got the idea for Blue Monk from Artie Shaw's Pastel Blue.

I like Monty a lot and has been following him for years. However, simplifying Monks intricate themes sounds wrong. You can put a different beat to it if you want but the themes should be according to Monk, not Monty.

vova47 the theme is still unmistakably monk. Playing it as intricately is much more restrictive than keeping to a theme... it’s keeping to a transcript

@@mohitoness No, not quite, please go back to Monk and listen harder.

@@vova47 lol! way to win the crowds over with that attitude. As usual critics just live in their own world thinking they know how music gonna be received and how it changes

It sounds like he is doing chromaticism on his right hand.
