  • As we continue on with our fence building journey, we work on the corner posts today, which are the foundation of the entire fence.

I’ve installed thousands of feet of fence in my life. The best way I found to tamp is to have a young strong guy to do it! That dang spud bar gets HEAVY!!!

Right about the Bar, we had an old railroad bar. That I used a lot, lol.

If you want to stay fit, it's best to do it as long as you are able, IMHO.

Have always tamped around poles when setting them. As you noted, little at a time and building up. Also, always added about 2" of gravel in the bottom of the hole for the post to rest on... Not to mention belling out the bottom of the hole... Was taught that way in NM

I tamp but usually add some concrete too... especially if you dont plan on ever moving the post

I have alway tamped and water in my post with a hose if I have a good water source. Living in Florida we have a lot of sandy ground so it very important to water them in.

Concrete guy of 25 years here. You half hitch your string around the pole. No nails needed. Love your channel. Just a tip.

I was thinking the same thing. Not a concrete guy, just a fellow construction worker (former, hehe).

It's always exciting to start the building process instead of the demolition! Thanks for y'alls time! You're in TN now so you've got to start getting the slang. 😀

With large posts I always pour some quikrete in the hole like a moat around the post. Then tamp on top. Once the quikrete sets that pole ain't leaning.

The alternative to "a little bit of dirt and a whole lot of tamping" is to have a guy in black do it for ya. I just found your channel and it's GREAT thank you. All the horse information is so good. My brother and I saved our paper route $ and would go riding here in southern New Jersey back in the mid 60's such great memories.

mighty fine job. Beautiful country. Did you say Tenn? MY Great Great Grandfather left Tenn to go fight the battle of New Orleans and he did not come home. One of 11 american dead that day. He was on his thoroughbred leading the charge

Appreciate the string tip, I always tied mine around the pole, so the string ended up in the middle of the pole. Nice to see you have some good help with the fence task. You have a nice place in the country thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing all your valuable experience. I anticipate fencing and cross fencing 5 acres next year and hopefully this will save me from making some costly mistakes. I look forward to seeing you in TN this fall.

Been building fences for 6 years now since I was 19 and shoot its a job. Nice video good tips, glad the beard is back. Hey though at least you got an auger 90% of my work is to rough to use one with it either becoming deadweight or dangerous on site.

I just want ask the question “why “ would you notch the posts you are planning on bracing? Cutting a notch will weaken the corner post . Now if you cut a brace that goes horizontally between the corner post and the brace post then drive in long spikes to hold horizontal brace in place, then wrap your twisted wire from top of brace post to bottom of corner post, then take your fencing pliers and twist wire together til it’s tight. Your corner post will last a lot longer… that’s just the way I do it here in Saskatchewan Canada….

I know this an unsolicited comment and you don't care to hear all the..."we always did it this way" and I don't blame you, but I'm going to break the rule here. A lineman for our local power company once told me that whether you are setting a power pole (40' +) or a fence post, you are not tamping enough if you are not looking for more dirt to finish the tamping job and mound it over. Boy was he right. And the more you can stick SOME gravel and/or rock in there, the better.

Pretend that the pole is a bull in a ring and you are trying to loop him.

I didn’t hear you say why you choose to temp instead of pour concrete or drive the posts in. Would you mind sharing your reasoning behind it please?Thank you sir!
