I've never played the 2008 Prince of Persia, and knowing how polarising and controversial that title has been, I'm tempted to make that my next focus (while also neatly wrapping up the POP saga until the Sands of Time Remake releases, at least). However, I'm also tempted to go left field with something else: Dishonored, Shadow Warrior, Devil May Cry, or maybe even the 2004 Bards Tale game. Let me know your thoughts!

PoP 2008 is a bit different from the Sands games, and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about it. The game's biggest issue is that it doesn't wrap up its story (and the console-exclusive DLC doesn't do a lot to help either).

I discovered your videos on the series recently and I binged them in 2-3 days.Your analysis on Prince of Persia was so refreshing for a franchise that I grew up with. It is my childhood(a pretty disturbing one since PoP WW was my favorite and still is) and I love it even today. I hope you continue to make these types of reviews for the 2008 reboot, and even the movie, which just like you said, was a pleasant surprise as a solid experience. Keep it up! I hope more people will subscribe to your chanel, and maybe even discover Prince of Persia through these videos.

i recall slightly finishing this game a few years ago - I remember the gameplay being quite enjoyable and the story mostly being dull and redundant - very cool video. I've played all Sands of time games multiple times but this one only once and don't think I'll play it ever again - not that I would not have a good time flying around the maps but there are just too many other games to play out there.

  • @FraserSouris
    @FraserSouris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great video. You did a fantastic job of explaining and exploring your points.
I agree with much of it, but still, I feel Forgotton Sands on PS3/360/PC might be the best POP game in the series (maybe on par with POP '08 which I feel is the second or 1rst best). Yeah, the story isn't the best, but the platforming is so much fun. I remember going back and playing Sands of Time after playing FS and being quite bored and missing all the more challenging platforming, puzzles and even more fun combat. I feel that speaks to the game's strengths. Even with a lacklustre story and flaws, its gameplay is strong enough to make it a game I'm glad was made.
Also, regarding your point on the Prince regaining health through orbs now instead of water, yes, it's less unique but I'd argue it complements the combat's design now. In past POP games, you both had more defensive options like blocking, but also fewer enemies to deal with. Said enemies also weren't the most challenging to deal with. So it makes sense to have it that health could only be restored at fixed points throughout the world so any damage the player suffers has some consequences in combat. But in FS, since the Player has to fight larger crowds and more frequent bosses, and doesn't have any blocking or parry option, having red orbs is necessary to keep fights more fair. Plus, it encourages going after fodder enemies to regain health if the player gets hurt.
Do you have any plans to look at the other versions of POP FS? Because all of them are entirely different to the PC version. The Wii, PSP and DS versions all have entirely different story and gameplay. And I feel it might be interesting to find ways to see all these different pieces and how they could be used to improve each other.
For example, the plot of the DS version is that a cult kidnaps the Prince to take his blood for a ceremony to revive a demon using a magical sword. This ceremony gives the Prince amnesia. He later gets this magical sword to find a pretty but kind djinn living in it. As they journey through the game, the djinn tries to tell the Prince about his backstory to which he is skeptical about.
In the PSP version, someone is assassinating members of the Persian Royal family. Sharaman tells the Prince to stay locked in his room to keep him safe. But the Prince escapes because he hears this kind blue light asking for help. This light tells him she's a nature spirit and needs his help to take down the fire spirit that wants to assassinate Persian Royal family because of a prophecy that they'll stop him.
I kinda feel the PSP version sorta has what you were looking for in the PC's version's story. Because when the Prince is fighting the Fire Spirit, he tells him "You can't run from your fate". Which creates that dramatic irony given what happens with the Prince. And that the water spirit is a constant companion who wants the Prince's help in rescuing the other spirits and is grateful for his help.

      @@MikeZach exactly true mate.
I'm from Iran and pretty much know my mother tongue. But I can assure you no one here wants a POP game dubbed in persian.
It's really awkward the way non-native dubbers speak a specific language.
Even on this game in some in-game fights with the demons, they speak - mostly taunting or intimidating - in persian. It's awkward to an extent that I prefer the main language.

I have a love/hate relationship with the 2008 one. I played it briefly when it came out, and the only addition I enjoyed was Elika, and the Farsi sentences she spoke when saving the Prince (I'm Persian too btw). :D - then I picked it up recently, and now I could play it on better graphic settings. And really had a good time with it. Still don't like the combat, though.

The gameplay elements and parkour especially were interesting... But lol, this reminds me of The Witcher 3, most polished gameplay in the series, but unoriginal narrative that butcher the spirit of previous games. The movie was an atrocity tho, wtf was the point making Vizier into Prince's uncle, the sands of time backstory made hilariously childish and actors chosen... I have one question: If industry nowdays cares that much about racial representation, then why the hell doesn't that apply to say, historical movies, or history inspired fantasy like here. We had our share of irish greeks in alexander the great and scottish spartans in 300.
But actually, the one actor that would've fit Prince's role perfectly is the one who player Xerxes in 300, just google that Brazilian guy without the grim, he's got it all, the body, the charms, the dramatic gaze. Especially in the scene where Xerxes is young, that's the Prince of Persia right there

It was quiet a long time since I've played the "main" version of the game, which I have on PC. I barely remember much of it. But I do remember that there was a lot of things I disliked and some things I liked. Freezing water was a nice addition, but other powers wasn't really that interesting for me. Platforming in general reminded me of PoP 2008 and I can't say I like or dislike it. Combat was the biggest disappointment for me. It's satisfying to strike multiple enemies at once and the feedback and sound design is pretty solid, but the mechanics was too simplistic. I really liked blocking and counter, dual wielding and other acrobatics available in previous games. But it is what it is. I liked this game, but generally didn't bother to replay it much. I actually almost completed it twice, but in my second play through I couldn't progress because of some glitch, so my save file was basically corrupted.
As of late I rather prefer to play The Forgotten Sands on Wii. And personally I enjoy it quiet a lot. It's not exactly on par with previous games, but it's not exactly a prequel sequel either. Main story is okay, the gameplay is where things gets more interesting. Platforming and puzzles are here and lots of them spiced up with additional powers to complement them. Combat a little more complex compared to PC version, but if you're not a fan of waggling controllers a lot or using Wii controller in general, it will frustrate you. Personally I try to use various moves to spice up the combat and for me it feels just as satisfying as in SoT. And there is secrets like classic potions to unlock costumes and a port of Mac version of original PoP like in console versions of SoT. There is also various challenge maps with various things to do. This game is simply packed with content.
I did tried PSP and DS versions, but not for too long to make a proper comment. PSP version seems okay as it plays in 2.5D perspective and uses similar style of Wii version in terms of music and Prince's appearance, but the story is absolutely different. Actually all versions of The Forgotten Sands have different stories, characters and gameplay, only PC and Xbox360/PS3 are the same. And DS version is very very meh.
I really wish Ubisoft attempted another reboot with The Forgotten Sands. Gameplay-wise at least as it was clear there is no returning to the way movement and combat worked in old games. Wii version was a very solid game self-contained game like SoT was. I didn't like PoP 2008, so maybe a remake of SoT is what really needed right now to understand in what direction a potential reboot can be taken.
Also I did like the movie and I wouldn't mind to see a review of it since a lot of people mostly express negativity of it.

The whole philosophy(if it even has one) of this game is wrong. From the moment you start the game you're greeted with only easy and normal difficulty, not even a greyed out locked "hard" option. And that's my problem with it, difficulty. The story is bland, the fact that they shoehorn this one between sot and ww makes no sense, the score is bland, the combat can be fun at times but once you start using powers you can kiss any form of challenge goodbye, freerunnin gets pretty fun by the end, enemies are bland, the power-related puzzle are solid though. I have to legit manually create my own challenge by keepin away from upgrading. Which is kinda frustating cause there's a good pop game in here.

I don’t mean to oversell the story. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily better, just a preference. It has a more playful/“video-gamey” tone and the prince having a companion to go back-and-forth with much earlier is nice.

I agree with most, but in my opinion the combat that was introduced in warrior within was amazing, loved doing combos and insane moves (overall PoP WW is my fav) and i find the combat in forgotten sands to be complete dog shit. It's very repetitive and booring and your options are quite limited, the extra abilities are basically just buffs to the very limited move set.

My biggest beef with this game is that there is no effort made at all to weave in the Dahaka. Even just a tease at the end or a fleeting bit of dialogue would've done it. Not referencing the Dahaka makes the entire game just *feel* superfluous, which is a shame.

Excellent video my man, these are some of the best video game analyses on youtube. You're really underselling yourself, your content is of an excellent quality and I hope you continue making videos like these.
    Some points:
    1. Your idea of making the story more interesting by having Ratash thinking at first that the Prince is Solomon and helping him because of that makes no sense lore-wise, since Solomon was Ratash's enemy (it's kind of a plot twist when we discover in the game that Solomon's army isn't actually his army in the true sense of that word - it's "his" technically since he possesess them, but that's because he has them locked away - "his" army constists of actually his enemies which Ratash created). I'm surprised you made this mistake since you obviously played the game and are familiar with the story.
    2. I don't agree on Forgotten Sands having the hardest challenges in the series, I think that applies to Warrior Within because of its Sand Wraith segments (and arguably some segments before it as well).
    3. Your video said that there will be three parts of the analysis, but there isn't a third one (in which you said you'd give your final thoughts etc.). This isn't really a big deal since you already mentioned throughout the video how you would fix the game and you also summarize your thoughts in the "me rambling a thank you" segment.
    4. I can't exactly remember the two murals in the fountain place in which you talk with Razia, but I have a memory of recognizing them at the very end of the game, so I think those two murals are like a foreshadowing of what will happen in the story (if I recall correctly in one of them we see the Prince present the Djinn Sword to his father while probably telling him the entire plot of the Forgotten Sands).

If they went a more magical route - where sand and water were two separate entities somewhere the jhin was a cretor of skrts like kaileena and the dahaka being the new monster woyld.have been great and probably would have sold better than a movie preaquel - like why theres a separate sands soldiers army sitting in another castle.... ok

I like to think this is an alternate timeline created by the Warrior Within Prince destroying the sands of time in the bad ending, this Prince has met Farah but he doesn't posses her amulet and I don't believe he outright mentions the Sands of Time themselves, he also seems new to rewinding time in this game.

I am going to, no matter how controversial it may sound, state with confidence that this is my favorite game in the franchise. And it sits nicely next to the three originals in my mind. I completed it a bunch of times compared to sands of time and warrior within (my introduction to the franchise) that I only ever finished once and two thrones never got to finishing. Just like I consider Silent Hill the room a proper 4th installment to the Silent Hill franchise, so I do with Forgotten Sands for the Price of Persia.
I also got a little giggle from the film adaptation because Dastan was my headcanon name for the Prince from when he was still unamed, so seeing Ubisoft going with the same name I had in mind was a fun moment.

I’m hoping that the remake game will come out closer to 2023 to coincide with its 20th anniversary and maybe teasing a possibility in remaking WW and TTT and maybe making them better and most consistent with each other and less dated. Would be a welcomed reasons for delay.

BTW, in 37:22 , Ratash is shouting in Persian, which translates to: “son of solomon, now I’ll have my revenge.”
He thinks prince is king solomon’s son. And since prince doesn’t know persian(weird?) , he only understands the name “solomon”.

yes ancient Persian and modern Persian are very different, but in this game they were just too lazy to make it accurate enough.
I can tell they were lazy because they didn’t even bother to cast Persian speakers for the voice overs, Ratash speaks Persian horribly because his voice actor clearly doesn’t speak Persian, the same goes for Razia and few others that speak Persian in the game.
