IMO, Capcom's remasters so far stink, esp. their Omimusha Warlords remaster. As a huge fan of this series, I'd say the Onimusha series deserves a remake, but true to the original. No reinterpretation.

There was one week where whatever we were promoting sold so well that we didn't have a copy in the shop to have running behind us. So I recommended playing Oni 3 because the intro was so awesome. Great review as always appreciate all the details and angles you provide on your videos man. I decided to replay O1 and this a few months ago and add that one of the biggest QOL improvements from O1 were the dynamic camera angles during fight areas. Can't remember if you mentioned this or not or if it was fixed in O2, but fighting enemies in transitional spots on fixed camera angles were very annoying in O1and it was great to see that it was rectified here.
That definitely can be an issue in games with fixed perspectives and even more so in action games with fixed perspectives. It never bothered me too much, but I could totally see it being an issue for some. I've always been willing to give up gameplay function for solid immersion.
Pretty cool video! Thanks for mentioning my mod. To be honest I was pretty surprised to see it was working with the Ubisoft release as I made it for the steam version specifically.
I hope you do an Evil Within retrospective. I loved RE Village so much until I played the second Evil Within, and I genuinely enjoyed it more than RE8 and I love all the RE’s.
An absolute blast of a game and that intro was so awesome, I recorded it on my old phone to rewatch it on the go, or before bed. I remember being at the story and getting shocked, about seeing Jean Reno on the cover. Playing as Jacques, Heihachi and Michelle felt fresh and amazing and having seven weapons asSamanosuke, old and new was a power trip. And taking Nobunaga's sword in the final battle, was hype as hell! Miss this game, have the disc & memory card, but my brother's got to keep the ps2 after I moved out. 🎮
Avalanche Reviews, I know there's stuff going on right now. I just want you to know how grateful I am for you for making this retrospective series and looking back at the Onimusha series, one of my favorite game series ever. Thank you so much Avalanche. You rock, best wishes to you and your family and thanks for your great work!
I really lost count on how many times I watched that cinematic intro, I even bought the Japanese version on PS2 to watch that masterpiece of opening in Japanese Voices (my PS2 was hack only to be able to play Japanese versions of games like Onimusha 3, Final Fantasy X and so many others) Onimusha 3 is my favorite in the series and I think it is a tie between the first and third in how many times I started and finish both games! Wish Capcom remastered Oni 2 and 3 they said that the first did make good sales to keep going but they never did.
Love this game series. I still think the intro to this game is still one of if not the best intro to a game. It makes you think if Capcom will remaster or remake the rest of the Onimusha games as they did a few years ago with the first game. Great video
I hope they do remaster this one, but honestly I don't think they will. The first remaster didn't sell well enough sadly. We'll just have to enjoy the original and hope one day new game consoles will upscale old games really well. I think that's the closest we'll get.
Thank you! This game will always be my absolute favorite, no matter what. I know it`s nostalgia but i play this game all few years, sometimes the entire Series but O3 just feels like the perfect game without any flaws i recognized. Thank you, for giving them some attention, i always feared they`d die.
Great job brotha. My favorite franchise next to Metal Gear. I checked my box in storage and they’re all still there. You remind me of getting back to nostalgia in my life. Will do soon!
To this day this game holds a special place in my heart. I remember playing this for the first time and being blown away by it, I couldn’t put down the controller
Because of your uploads I just went and bught whole trilogy this week... Popped it in PS3 and just time travelling back in time!!! Thank you!!! Absolutely thank you!!!!
This game on my CRT over component looks jaw dropping after all these years. I know that this isn't a survival horror but if you enjoyed Onimusha so much you may really want to check out Genji Dawn of the Samurai, it's very similar to Onimusha 2. And about the PC port looking worse, sometimes older PC games relied on special hardware to make certain effects that may be missing on modern GPUs (Probably the most known example is PhysX), and that's starting to be very evident as years come by, hopefully someday we get emulation of some sort for that kind of stuff.
OMG I was about to snap if you didn't mention the opening video.....to this day I still believe it's the greatest game opening. Also I played Blade Warriors soooo much can't wait to see your take on it.....also one more thing Dawn of dreams is great
Honestly my favorite out of the Underrated Quadrilogy...Yes it's a Quadrilogy not a Trilogy because Dawn of dreams IS infact a direct sequel to Onimusha 3 and not a spin-off. While I enjoyed all of the games,This specific game just feels right at home and not so overblown and too much Quantity filled like Onimusha 4 while also not too less like the previous entrie This Game just feels right and balanced with the right amount of content from start to finish and if anything i'd say this is the most Quality Onimusha game out of the Quadrilogy. Here's hoping you get to cover Dawn of Dreams too....It did so many interesting stuff for its time and really deserved to said to many.
Really fun review once again and looking forward to the last two spin off games. I had no idea Donnie Yen helped with the opening, that’s incredible! I do have one big question though…What is your favorite weapon for each character? Also, Michelle actually has one more weapon (perhaps you got it), a sniper rifle…though, you didn’t miss much by not getting it honestly XD. Otherwise, I always felt Michelle was like an evolution of the classic Resident Evil gameplay thanks to how fast you can move in Onimusha 3.
Yeah, I grabbed her sniper rifle, but the grenade launcher is so much more useful. Favorite weapon huh? I like the long ass katana for Samanosuke and the fire sword/whip for Jacques.
@@AvalancheReviews Haha, yeah, I gotta admit, those are all definitely really fun to use. I think, I like the dual swords for Samanosuke, but also the flame sword for Jaques, and the Shotgun for Michelle. Thanks for the response dude! AH! Also, I put together a very short video in regards to what was changed from Japan to International on Onimusha Dawn of Dreams' normal mode. I hope your endeavor into it proves fruitful to some degree nonetheless.
Great retrospective series! Onimusha was always a favorite. Doesn’t look like Dawn of Dreams has native progressive scan or a patch available, but fingers crossed you cover the widescreen patch! Makes the FOV so much better 👌
One of the saddest days of my childhood was when the PS2 disc stopped working. I played this game so much, hours on hours, that I guess it got damaged. After that I would play Onimusha 2 again. It was good but it just didn't fulfill the amazingness that 3 was. Thanks for the memories. I'm so glad there are so many of us out there that consider this game a real gem and a masterpiece for the franchise
This one's the only Onimusha I ever beat.... played through Warlords and got right about halfway but my PC broke... gotta work on that someday.... definitely gonna play them all! Keep the great vids coming!
This was my first ever PS2 game, and one of the first games I remember playing. I was 6 at the time, and I remember being really shocked at how violent the game was, but at the same time, the whole opening was so cool that I couldn't just stop playing (to be fair, most of my childhood was playing and watching things that were aimed at a somewhat older audience and arguably too violent for a child). I couldn't understand a fraction of whatever was going on, because at the time, I had no knowledge of a single word of english, japanese OR french. That also meant I had no idea of what "load game" meant, so I kept restarting the game every single time. Unsurprisingly, I never advanced much, but dang, I played this game a LOT anyways
I've enjoyed your Onimusha content and the shine you are giving it because it is one of my favorite series ever with 3 being my favorite. Instant thumbs up.
Got this notification while getting breakfast at WaWa . Best way to start the day man . This was an awesome game , can’t wait for dawn of dreams my personal favorite.
Love the channel and though I’ve never played an Onimusha game, I love how informative these videos are. These games just slipped under my radar and I’ve always been curious about it. One thing puzzles me though; if they wanted to target the American market, why have half the game take place in France instead of the U.S.? By the end of the video, I wasn’t surprised this one still missed the mark in the American market.
Thank you for another excellent review! I will be looking forward to when you may possibly cover Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, because I feel that that may be a divisive title in the series (and, to date, the last game in the series).
2 years for that intro?!!! And Donnie Yen as fight choreographer? Now I understand why that intro stands in a class of it's own, compared to other game intros.
I remember getting this game day 1 release and ended up being one of my favorites of all time on PS2. The intro was one of the most mind-blowing things I ever saw, this was the most fun I had in a PS2 game in YEARS Even able to use the previous weapons the raizan, enryuu, and shipuu which can actually HELP in certain difficulties especially critical mode ;) P.S. did you guys know there's a massive loophole in critical mode where enemies can be damaged completely but only KILLED by crits? That means you can get a boss down to 1 health if you have a certain vest equipped that shows a enemy's HP; when they're down to 1, go crazy getting that one Crit and boom, stress free!
Love watching with cookies and choccy milk cause Jared-San gives it life. I must get a old system to play this again. I love the information I had no idea the dev team was changed. I much appreciated the work. Be well master Jared :)
Had a great time playing the game back when it came out, and quite enjoyed the story as it had the right levels of cheese from both the absurd plot and localized voice acting, it was also great to see Samanosuke's story reach a proper conclusion after the somewhat abrupt end of the original game where it seems like he's about to fight Nobunaga, and then nothing happens.
I often forget how much I loved and replayed this game back in the day. Must have played through it four different times at least. How my heart yearns for a remaster of 2, 3 and Dawn of Dreams.
Man, I'm really sad I missed this series of games back in the day. I'm sure I would've absolutely loved it. Maybe I'll get around to it some day... I've got the remaster of the first game installed on my PS4, so maybe I'll get into that over the holidays. And, holy shiiiiit, the games look amazing with your setup! Do you do Let's Plays with this kind of setup? I'd be so down to watch a LP with this PS2 fidelity.
I remember getting into this series thanks to a CD at a gaming magazine incluing the CGI OP. When are you going to talk about all of the demons being from Shakespeare's Hamlet?
I got this game day one and I loved it. As you mention this feels so much bigger especially the amazing opening that left a pretty big impact. I will admit I had no idea who the hell Jean Reno was when I played this game. I mean he looked familiar but he was no one special to me. I liked they had 3 characters to mess with an that they actually felt different one another. I look forward to your thoughts on the final entry part 4 as while it has been years since iv played all of these games I remember loving all of them.
This is the only game I played at the time and I fell in love with it. It was only because I saw Jean in the cover and I was like "Hey! That Godzilla guy!" LOL! Little did I know I unlock a fun game experience. I can imagine if it does get a remake or another game it would be more of what they did with Resident Evil since that formula seems to work. It would be interesting to see sword mechanics using the RE engine.
FYI, I gave this video a "Like" before I even watched it. I have beaten Onimusha 2 more times than 3 due to exploring different story arcs; but I have always preferred this one, though some of the training stages are extremely frustrating with 3. I never figured out the 10 point stab. Again, I paused the video at 12 seconds to post this comment. I have watched many of your videos, including the first two of this. I look forward to watching your observations.
Yo i was mad excited for this entry in the retrospective. Onimusha 3 is definately one of the bests of its time, and i remember trying to change my hair back then to try looking a bit like Samanosuke. Bro it didnt turn out good, i looked very funny and i had a weird teenager moustache HAHAHA But fuck that, what matters is that i had tons of fun with this game, and im pretty sure its one of the games ill always try to find an excuse to visit, if only just to rewatch that kickass intro and beat some asses with Jean Jacques Belmont HAHAH GREAT video as always, im really surprised with some info here about the production of that intro, they were really going for it with this one huh? O_o deyum. I never played this spin off smash one as well, despite finding very fun to see videos on it with people controlling zero; kinda curious to hear your take on it.
It's a damn shame how the closest thing to a Proper Remaster...is to play the Quadrilogy (Yes i am including Dawn of dreams as well) in by emulating it at 4k with some tweaks in the options. Surprisingly the newer verison of PCSX2 offers even more better performances so it's always worth replaying it now.
I’m presently streaming and playing this game on my PC. I haven’t played it in a decade and it’s just as good as I remember. I’ve been playing it in parts but plan to stream the entire gameplay on my channel. I think it’s funny how 2 days ago I start streaming this and then this review comes out. I’d suggest this game to anyone who enjoys a good story and decent challenge.
The opening to Onimusha 3 is still the best opening to any video game. I absolutely love the Onimusha series, I remember buying Blade Warriors and playing it to death in preparation for the third games' release. What I would give for the whole series to get a HD release (to go along side the HD Warlords release).
I remember standing in game stop, Seeing the opening cut scene of 3 playing on repeat. I had played the first game and loved it, but I'm the type of person that has to play games like this in order. I'd missed #2. But that cut scene forced me to buy the game anyway, and it's one of the greatest I've played. Hoping for Oni-5 :)
I completed this game today. I absolutely loved it:D Speaking of "things just aren't as cool as they used to be..." After completing the game I unlocked a minigame where you play as Heihachiro. It was just there as bonus content. Today that would have been sold as a 23$ DLC or probably even worse. Special weapons and gear in the game would have been stripped out and sold as pre order DLC.
Man....I fucking love onimusha. I found all 3 games in a bargain bin as a kid. My mom could not afford to buy me many games, so bargain bin was essentially the top shelf for me. I remember picking all 3 of them up for about 15 bucks each, expecting some basic hack and slash samurai game I could kill time with. They quickly became some of my fave games on the system and I still own my original copies to this day. They had no business being in that bin, but boy I am glad they were. Now we just need the rest of them on steam.
I love this game. So wacky, gutsy, and surprisingly creative! Fun to play, three different charismatic playable characters and generally a solid entry!

Had the day off from work today and I woke up to see a new onimusha video. Today is a good day.
Appreciate you getting this out knowing you have things going on in your personal life.
I have never clicked on a video faster! I love this game a lot!
Seems like you have your priorities in order. 3 is so damn good!
Thank you so much for doing the Onimusha games! Truly a classic series that I spent many hours with.
It's my pleasure! I love this series too.
I’ve seen that opening cutscene so many times, so badass
Same here. "Garganto!"
Amazing video as usual! I hope you're doing well man!
Morning coffee and avalanche. This might be a pretty solid Thursday. Thanks dude. 😃
@@AvalancheReviews That's a shame that it didn't sell well. Yeah, we might have to just enjoy the originals series of games.
Thank you!
This game will always be my absolute favorite, no matter what. I know it`s nostalgia but i play this game all few years, sometimes the entire Series but O3 just feels like the perfect game without any flaws i recognized.
Thank you, for giving them some attention, i always feared they`d die.
Love you buddy.
That introduction cinematic though. You could talk about it for 20 minutes.
Definately xD
I was very surprised with the info here
And it makes way more sense now how epic that intro is lol
Great job brotha. My favorite franchise next to Metal Gear. I checked my box in storage and they’re all still there. You remind me of getting back to nostalgia in my life. Will do soon!
Video was a treat! Thank you for the time and effort you put in them. 😎
This was my favorite of the trilogy. I never did play 4 though but PCXS2 had that huge update so its on the list.
Love this game, so atmospheric, and the Paris scenes are a bonus.
I remember there was a demo disc that had the entire intro cutscene in it and I watched it over and over again. It was just stunning
Thanks for taking the time to do this video! Hugs! ( :
To this day this game holds a special place in my heart. I remember playing this for the first time and being blown away by it, I couldn’t put down the controller
Because of your uploads I just went and bught whole trilogy this week... Popped it in PS3 and just time travelling back in time!!!
Thank you!!!
Absolutely thank you!!!!
This channel is so underrated!! Great content, truly!
Thank you very much for these videos. I just went and bought the 3 Onimusha titles I’m missing because I couldn’t stand not playing them anymore .
That's a good point! There might have been gpu specific shaders that aren't in use anymore. I didn't even think of that!
Started watching you recently and I’m glad I was in time for the demon siege review! Awesome
While I enjoyed all of the games,This specific game just feels right at home and not so overblown and too much Quantity filled like Onimusha 4 while also not too less like the previous entrie
This Game just feels right and balanced with the right amount of content from start to finish and if anything i'd say this is the most Quality Onimusha game out of the Quadrilogy.
The Genma vs Oni war was freaking awesome! I loved every minute of it!
Capcom's Samurai Jack lol 😛
I'm plesantly surprised you skipped straight to Onimusha 3 instead of doing Blade Warriors next. Thank god lol.
Great retrospective series! Onimusha was always a favorite. Doesn’t look like Dawn of Dreams has native progressive scan or a patch available, but fingers crossed you cover the widescreen patch! Makes the FOV so much better 👌
This is a treat to wake up to. I always loved the fact that they included Jean Reno in this one. Wish more games did things like that.
I still remember staying up all night with my friend beating this game the first night it came out, incredible experience
Unsurprisingly, I never advanced much, but dang, I played this game a LOT anyways
no love for the extra mode where you play as the anoying guy with the spear that you unlock after beating the game
Lol classic
Kinda like Heihachiro Honda
damn I thought to myself how much you nailed that transition right before you mentioned it lol
hopefully this also gets the HD remaster treatment, Warlords HD gave me hope
Pretty much nobody bought Warlords HD. Let it rest in peace.
@@ZombiAstral speak for yourself
This was my first Onimusha. My second being the fighter one. Love this game to death.
@@stevendiaz5649 Don't be mad at facts. The franchise never sold amazing numbers, & the remaster sold even worse. Copium vs Reality.
@@stevendiaz5649 he's right tho, as much as I love the series, the remaster sold like ass.
I've enjoyed your Onimusha content and the shine you are giving it because it is one of my favorite series ever with 3 being my favorite. Instant thumbs up.
3's my fav too!!
This was the one I was really hoping would get remastered.
Jean Reno makes everything better.
Le professional demon slayer
Onimusha 3 has one of the greatest intros known to gaming history. Absolutely amazing
Hey just wanted to throw out some love my dude. I know you are under alot of stress. Take care brother.
Honestly, it's about knowing about what you're talking about. I cringe really hard when in 2021 people still pronounce Ryu as Rayoo.
Got this notification while getting breakfast at WaWa . Best way to start the day man . This was an awesome game , can’t wait for dawn of dreams my personal favorite.
Although the great *GENMA Onimusha* on OG Xbox IS my favourite, Onimusha 3 was also a Great on PS2
I come to Avalanche to remind myself I am not alone in loving a good tank controls.
Pronouncing things properly is never pompous or ignorant. It's respectful and shows a level of understanding and gratitude.
Onimusha 3's intro was and still awesome as hell. I remember seeing the intro when I was a kid and it was awesome.
I remember getting this game day 1 release and ended up being one of my favorites of all time on PS2.
The intro was one of the most mind-blowing things I ever saw, this was the most fun I had in a PS2 game in YEARS
Even able to use the previous weapons the raizan, enryuu, and shipuu which can actually HELP in certain difficulties especially critical mode ;)
P.S. did you guys know there's a massive loophole in critical mode where enemies can be damaged completely but only KILLED by crits?
That means you can get a boss down to 1 health if you have a certain vest equipped that shows a enemy's HP; when they're down to 1, go crazy
getting that one Crit and boom, stress free!
Never in my life i thought i wanted to see Onimusha retrospective.I fuckin love Onimusha 3.Jean reno baby
Love watching with cookies and choccy milk cause Jared-San gives it life. I must get a old system to play this again. I love the information I had no idea the dev team was changed. I much appreciated the work. Be well master Jared :)
Dude I can't wait for you to review the smash bros-style onimusha game! Playing that was always a good time
Massive massive kudos to you doing the PC port comparison
Had a great time playing the game back when it came out, and quite enjoyed the story as it had the right levels of cheese from both the absurd plot and localized voice acting, it was also great to see Samanosuke's story reach a proper conclusion after the somewhat abrupt end of the original game where it seems like he's about to fight Nobunaga, and then nothing happens.
Trying to pronounce another cultures words is admirable and appreciated! Better than RG85 pronouncing Samanosuke, Samano-sookay lmao
Great video. I've owned this game for years, but have yet to play it. I should do something about that.
I loved every Onimusha game with 3 and dawn of dreams being tied for my faves
I look forward to watching your observations.
aaaand we're back, im back, i guess im bingeing your Onimushas videos tonight ... tight
Sounds like a good night.
Yo i was mad excited for this entry in the retrospective. Onimusha 3 is definately one of the bests of its time, and i remember trying to change my hair back then to try looking a bit like Samanosuke.
Bro it didnt turn out good, i looked very funny and i had a weird teenager moustache HAHAHA
But fuck that, what matters is that i had tons of fun with this game, and im pretty sure its one of the games ill always try to find an excuse to visit, if only just to rewatch that kickass intro and beat some asses with Jean Jacques Belmont HAHAH
GREAT video as always, im really surprised with some info here about the production of that intro, they were really going for it with this one huh?
The intro, chefs kiss.
