Volkswagen/Audi - Camshaft Cap Seal replacement - 2.8L V6

- In this video I demonstrate removing and replacing the passenger side camshaft cap seal on the back of the cylinder head. This is a fairly common problem for leaking engine oil onto the exhaust manifold pipes. The process for repair is the same for the drivers side seyal. This side is easier to access because there is more room to work once the coolant recover tank is shifted out of the way. The car in the video is a 2.8L 6 cylinder Volkswagen Passat 4motion 2001-2005. I hope this video will be helpful to those doing this repair. Thanks for watching.star

Thank you for the video! Mine has sat for about 10 years because I wanted to keep miles off it and I went to start it not expecting the smoke to literally come pouring in the cabin through the vents 😂😂 glad I don’t have to pull the engine apart to get to these!
Good.luck with the fix Chad!
Thanks for this upload. For some time I was having oil seaping out from both rear end caps and burning up on the manifolds. I replaced both caps just how you show. It's been two weeks and no more leaks. Fix was straightforward. Just a tight area to work in. Thanks.
glad it worked well for you Bert. thanks for commenting
+Ozzstar so here is my update. 😭 about a month has passed since the fix and all seemed to be well. in fact these two caps are holding strong. problem is, the oil now found another exit route in the front passenger side. to my knowledge, this won't be an easy fix. 😢
Inspect the half moon shaped rubber seal that is in the end of the cylinder head, they are a bitch to replace.
+Ozzstar yeah I checked them both but they are not leaking. it's leaking from the front passenger side.
+Bert T. It's your cam seals or valve cover gasket. Goodluck. Cause the cam seals are a lot of work.
Hello Bud, you really helped me out. I did my valve covers twice not knowing we're the leak is then found out its the caps. Now holding my head because I have to do them again. However hopefully this trick works and sloves the issue. Thanks keep making good content. And love the 2 way tape trick ingenius
Same here.. or well, I'm about to do the valve cover seals and was looking at other stuff when this video popped up. Wouldn't have thought of this until after either if it wasn't for this video and your comment.
Thanks. Saved me a day of labor.
Awesome!
Awesome! Know what I'm doing this weekend
Very helpful video thanks!
Your welcome, thanks for the comment
Great video but how do I know if it is just the camshaft cap only that is leaking and not half moon seal and such ??,,, please help,,,, thank you GOD BLESS all....
Removing the valve cover ( 8 10mm nuts) makes this job a breeze
Is this the same motor that’s in the 1998 A4 2.8?
@hoppy760 I don't know but probably not much different..
LIKE YOUR STUFF -- YOUR A NATURAL.-- HELP ME OUT. NEED SOME HELP.... cleaning the exterior firewall I came on a part just behind the ECU unit - it appears a mouse had eaten through some wires that had been attached to a sensor or relay to something. it is blocked by ECU and panel under the wiper arms. need to remove @t get to it. BUT can't figure what it is. what it runs . - two problems I have is --- washer sprayer doesn't work and passenger side mirror won't fold in. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS THING. ANY HELP -- this is a 2002 v-6 glx passat - auto trans - 4 motion.
You need to access a wiring diagram. Figure out wire colors, repair and check that fuses aren't blown.
@@ozzstars_cars wiring is just not some thing I can read --- got the book but can't make heads ot tails out of it. what that thing is would give me a better idea... but thanks
Can I replace both cam seals on a 2001 audi a6 2.7t with out taking the motor out.
wow.. and here I am taking off the valve covers and stuff... when it's just the caps that need to be replaced.. I have a 2.7t engine and that same area where you worked on is where the smoke burning smell is coming from.. I'm going to just change out the caps and see what happens.. forget doing all the gaskets haha..
There may also be a half moon shaped seal back there, that can leak also. Thanks for watching Jesse
How would I know that's the one leaking?
How did it work out with you changing the caps this way ? did it leak or did it work ? thank you,,,,
It worked for a while but you might as well do the half moon and all. These engines will leak eventually. I didnt do the cam o seals on the cam shafts or rods whatever they are called and oil was leaking again. At least i can take the front end off in 15min with all the practice i have lol.
Hello, i have same problem, leaks on dhe cap, should i change just the cap from outside or something inside went wrong 🙂
Sorry I can't give you an answer over the internet. I would need to see it.
Good video what about driver side same thing ??
Been awhile but I thought on the drivers side that one is in the front.
@@ozzstars_cars ok thank you 🙏
Thanx for the nice informartive video.
You are welcome Colin, thanks for your comment!
You are the best
Any idea on a p0735 on a 04 vw passat GLX 4motion 2.8 v6 it starts to jump after going over 35mph but the code is showing a 5th gear incorrect ratio code.
Not sure what is going on. Also
I have a p0296 code as well not sure what is causing that
I would suggest you scan the car with VAGcom software to get data. See what the TCM is doing. This way you can get some direction to the problems.
I have a 2012 Audi A4 Quattro, with the 2.0 Liter Turbo. Would this be the same process?
If it has camshaft caps it should but I don't know exactly for that engine.
Mine isn't a tight fit on one side and regularly needs replacing, any ideas what could cause this?
Are you using a VW OEM part or aftermarket?
@@ozzstars_cars thanks for reply its FEBI I use 👍
My audi 2.8 smokes from the rear of the engine kinda similar to this place. On both sides. Smells like oil. 235k+/- (no speedo) miles. Could this be the culprit???
Use an inspection mirror like this one in the link, amzn.to/2tCyPjH You should be able to see where the oil is leaking.
Sooo how did you push in the cap? you didn't show that part?
With my fingers, slides right in with pressure. The wet sealant helps it go in easier.
What kind of gasket sealer did you use around that cap?
It's gray permatex RTV for import cars.
I recall taking my 98 A4 to a shop and they charged me about $600 to replace the cam seals. I am assuming this is the same thing.
These cam end caps, not seals. They are not the same thing
what is that silver looking cap directing behind the camshaft cap?
+deejayexcluesive in what part of the video? I need more specifics
@ 0:35
Variable valve timing cam position sensor
Same as 1999 Audi A6 2.8L?
Yes it is
do the new caps just slide right in place? lol
Wouldn't it be nice if all things were that easy? Thanks for watching and commenting
