How to save money on an underground bulk gas tank installation

  • This is perhaps a little off topic for a kitesurfing channel but it is based on personal experience so I thought i'd share the experience, it might be useful to people considering an underground gas tank.
You first need to figure out why you want an underground tank, whether it be saving space or not having to deal with the inconvenience of bottles etc.
For us there was almost no choice. We plan to build an extension to the rear of the house and our existing above ground tank would be too near to the building. We couldn't move it further away as the tanker would not be able to reach it to fill it up. The only place left that had 3 m clearance around all sides was the middle of the front lawn.
We got 2 quotes, calor and flogas. However the Calor surveyor was a complete jobsworth and turned the whole idea down flat, saying that the delivery lorry could not park on the road while it unloaded the tank, which is totally incorrect. Anyway we went with flogas and found them to be pretty good. They gave us the specification document for the trench and pit, plus any other stipulations on distances away from pipework. They also gave us the number of the installations team who helped out with any questions we had about the prep work.
The trench had to be 300 wide and 600mm deep, the gas pipe going in was only about 30mm so a spade's width is kind of ample to lay the pipe.
Have all the materials you need ready.
Another good tip is try to prep the ground work as near to the instal as possible. We are having a hot, dry spell and the ground has cracked and contracted. Try to keep uniform moisture in the ground where possible, especially near buildings. Get the holes back filled as soon as you can.
