Just found this - hands down far more enjoyable than the wacky American pickers shows. Far more interesting antiques & homes as well - thanks !

What a wonderful visit within the Lord's residence to experience the home's extraordinary history. What is a lovely balance of fitting architecture, decor, and the grandeur is it's simplicity that marks a very fine taste. How easy to live among these rooms. Some wealth of their day have interiors that repeat of periods or pretentiousness of personal tastes that crowds the space. Truly a heart of a home that the is cared and lovingly appreciated. Thank you. I feel privileged to have a peek.

The rooms have a majestic opulence in entering them, with eyes wide open with entertainment. As an American, I view these videos to learn.

I've discovered Drew Pritchard designed sofas at Barker and Stonehouse. I've been looking at bland, awkward, cheap looking sofas in the us for a year or two. When I found Drew's sofas, I fell smack dab in love with the Durant. Unfortunately, I will have to move to Europe to possess one since they aren't sold over here. So sad but so glad someone out there gets design like Drew does. I follow all Drew's shows, I think I've watched mostly all of them, including the restorers series which I watch over and over and just love. Just wanted to publicly lament that I can't own that sofa. I'm not through pouting about it. Judy

That mirror looks unrestored wonderful. I used to give away gilded hollowed out real walnuts as christmas gifts for tree hanging and what I noticed as a kid was that as they aged with use the gold would wane so what i thought was that if people spend good money on picture frames with the red emerging then why not start off the painting of the walnut shells with red paint so that you could tell what had already been gilded. As the red emerged you could enjoy the effect of reguild them. A friend some twenty years later commented that each holiday he really liked bringing out the walnuts and he never tired of their look. His visitors would ask him where did he find them. By that time I was finding them as antiques made of very thin glass people began to ask me about them and i said you find them only if you are very lucky or pay through the nose for them because years ago antique christmas ornaments are very expensive. I then started to dry out citrus fruit guilding them. Sometimes you can find what people dried out long ago but it is far easier to ornament citrus than walnuts. Worms and moths always emerge from the walnuts regardless how much de-insecting you do. Insects are never a problem with citrus because they are acidic.

Interesting that the architects would use designs inspired from animal bones in these high end houses. Jefferson designed some of his Montecello wall decorations from Palladio's Four Books. They would make them out of paper mache. When Jefferson returned As US Ambassador to the French Court in Paris, a quantity of shredded paper in the 86 crates of what he brought back with him. For some reason there is no record of he selling it off after use to papermakers in Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, DC or even reused at Monticello? What I was also surprised to learn was that despite the regard peple would make in comments about food served by Jefferson following his time in Europe not one piece of food cooking equipment survives. At least they know how his "heat" points looked like in the kitchen in order to cook the different types of food with an appropriate heat.

Is that a "usual" amount of ice? When I did my semester abroad in London in the late 80s we would get one ice cube in our drink. When I wanted to child some chmpaigne in Sheffield there was no ice to be found in any shop so I filled the bathtub with cold faucet water and floated them. Good as refrigeration. That experience got me used to drinking from the container coca cola bought in the states from the grocery shops that usually would have the AC set at 63F. What I noticed that swigs from the grocery were usually much smaller than the long drawn out supper chilled soda pop dispensed at the fast food shops. The colder it was the deadened the chill would make the tongue to the carbonation. A two litre bottle might at grocery store chil last me a week whereas I could go through two litres refill at the fast food shops in one sitting. So when i take my pills I keep a room temp bottle in the bedroom so that the chaulky pills do stick to my tonsils when the carbonation makes my mouth water a bit. If i drink noncarbonized water those chaulky pills end up sticking.
