It is not a formal requirement for the job in the sense that there is a legal obligation for the president to appoint a lawyer as AG. But somebody who was not a lawyer or at least didn't have a law degree and in fact a long history of practice, would *find the job virtually impossible* , since what the AG is supposed to do is to oversee the Department of Justice, which is responsible for enforcing many of our most fundamental laws. And *without that kind of background, a person would not be able to perform the functions of the position* .
