Great wee vid. Brings back many memories, especially the last few shots of the high flats in Wester hailed & sighthill. Growing up in Dumbryden, one of the seven estates that make up Westerhailes was great. Tough areas, a lot of poverty but as a kid it was brilliant. There were so many kids, you were never short of someone to play footie with in the carpark.
7 estates that make up Wester hailes? Av never heard that in ma puff, what are yi classin them as mate? Dumbryden, Murrayburn, Walkers, Westburn, Barnpark, Calder n Clovie??
Most people think of Edinburgh as the Castle and Princess Street. Sadly, our capital city has deep pockets of deprivation and poverty. The media refuses to highlight it and instead focus on Glasgow’s issues. It’s sad. We need to look after all our poor citizens in Scotland 🏴
Weird to say but its these places that make me love Edinburgh. It's a beautiful city but hate when outsiders assume its a tranquil place where nothing happens and that we're all 'snobs', Edinburgh wouldn't be the same without its Muirhouses, Piltons, Niddries etc. Although there nowhere near as bad as they used to be
Thats true mate, its strange how some of the areas blend in. You can be walking down a street full of run down council blocks, turn round the corner and you're in a well maintained street with nice bungalows and cottages and lovely looking gardens.
I know anyone that's successful is a snob. I think that attitude of hatred of people who do well or the hatred of people because they have successful parents and through no fault of their own are brought up in say morningside and are therefore instantly snobs, ken, is just another form of prejudice and that hopefully in time moronic attitudes like that will die out. Scotland should not be ashamed of having successful people or a middle class. If the comments were being made by an asshole who happened to come from Barnton Avenue West about how they hated outsiders thinking that Edinburgh was full of schemies and crime and drug abuse and that everyone is a Ned that person would be thought of as a dickhead and rightly so. My father recently had major heart surgery and the two surgeons were clearly middle class and probably the result of private education. If this is what the middle class give us I'm not critical. I went to a council school and had I wanted I could of been a surgeon too had I worked instead of trying to fit in with assholes so that I would not be perceived as a swot. Working class kids can be the victim of this prejudice to through peer pressure to fit in.
My childhood right there, each and every scheme from lochend to wester hailes were my stomping grounds and took many a chase through the mazes in muirhouse and pilton from drylaws finest..
I lived in BROOMHOUSE Broomhouse crescent, 30 odd years ago, right at the top in a bungalow just before the underpass that took you to the shops at Sighthill, i drove down Broomhouse Crescent last time i was in Edinburgh, not been there in over 20 years, and the playing field for the old primary school is a housing Estate 😮 How things change 😢
I was born in the 90's in Muirhouse and going back there for the first time in years a short while ago I seen how run down the area look now compared to what I remember as a child - back then it seemed a much nicer place than now...
Yeah i also grew up in muirhouse in the 90s, all the flats are gone for front door houses the schools have all been redeveloped and one rebuilt completely, to say its run down no.. run down is what it was the only original things still there from the 90s sre the likes of martelo court etc
Usually find the people that live in the run down areas are some of the nicest people you'll meet. Apart from the ones that'll stab you. Aside from that aye.
Yeah, they're really friendly, well adjusted people with zero aggression. Glaswegians also love telling anybody who'll listen how friendly they are, whilst holding a knife in their hands.
@Kiltskills never said everyone. There's bad in everyone. Prety sure even God had his flaws. Everyone has a capacity for killing someone, some people just don't act on it.

14 February 1967 we got the keys to our maisonette in West Granton. It was a dream home. Central Heating, a balcony with view over the Firth of Forth to Fife. We lived there, happily, for ten and a half years before scratching up the deposit for a home of our own. In those ten and a half years I do not remember any maintenance being done on the buildings by Edinburgh City Council, the owners of the premises - oh I’m wrong. Just remembered the council painted the window frames of any property visible to someone driving from Crewe Road North to Pennywell Road. Why, you might ask. HM Queen was in Edinburgh and was visiting an Engineering company in Pilton, and Crewe Road North/West Granton Road/Pennywell Road was the route chosen for her departure. Those maisonettes were occupied for only 30.5 years (approximately) before being raised and replaced.

Muirhouse I'd say, heroin and AIDS capital of Europe in the 80s,the parade of shops is probably the Muirhouse shopping centre as it had doors at each end
