  • So my wife wanted me to build her a Mantel. So I decided on this easy DIY version of a Rustic Faux Beam Mantel and i was able to purchase all the materials for under $30 You can easily scale this down and make a set of shelves with the same process. It will really set off your dull fireplace and add an attractive focal point in the room.
    I made a set of plans available here: dimensionswoodworks.com/

      That was made a few years ago (pre-Covid) so it may be a little more than $30 now but it’s still a great affordable project! Hope the video helps you tackle it!

    What grit sandpaper did you use? and did you apply any coat to seal the stain?

    Thanks for posting this... you inspired me to make a beautiful 5’x9”x5” mantle and it came out amazing. I used my miter saw for the side pieces, but big mistake... I found out my miter saw is off and ended up using putty to fill in gaps, but somehow, you can’t notice... but next piece, I will ONLY USE ONE TOOL for consistency purposes.

      Glad you were able to get it done! I wouldn’t say to do away with the miter saw , but you definitely want to dial it in. Pretty much any decent saw can be adjusted and there are several videos on just how to do it 😃 Merry Christmas 🎄

      Thanks brother! Not bad for a 1 day project. I usually take a LOT longer to get a build done.

      Nothing wrong with a good one day build

    What grit sandpaper did you use to finish the edges? Did you start with 120 and go up from there?

    • @dimensionswoodworks
      @dimensionswoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On anything i stain, i typically only go up to 120. Too fine and the pigment won’t adhere to the fibers in the wood correctly

    What size are the pin nails being used? I currently have 1”

    • @dimensionswoodworks
      @dimensionswoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a 23ga 1” pin. That’s all you need. The glue is holding it, not the pin nails. And you can probably get away with no pins and just use tape as clamps....

    I'm doing this! Could you please tell me the wood piece dimensions? Like the french clete, did you get a 2x4 or a 1x2? What was it? And your beam looks square all the way around with the same thickness on all three sides. Is it possible to have the two and bottom be 12 inches and the one facing out, 8 inches?

      I think i actually used a 1x4 for the cleat. Dimensions of each side don’t matter as long as your miters are good. Thanks for watching.

      @@dimensionswoodworks what type of wood glue did you use?

    • @dimensionswoodworks
      @dimensionswoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brand doesn’t matter, but i prefer gorilla glue. No need for water resistance in this application

      Pine. Douglas Fir to be exact. Sold at Lowe’s in the select pine section.
