Did anyone notice Mischa was crying when the cards were held up in the stadium? Ironic as so many countries boycotted the Olympic Games due to The Russian/Afghanistan War. But the true reason was due to the books that were being found in customs. Fictional novels in which bombings were to occur at the Olympic Games. Both books were published in 1979 and were seen as warranted concern by Russia at the time.

I know there was one novel, "Black Sunday" by Thomas Harris, about an attack on some stadium, but I don't think it was the Olympics, and that book was published much earlier than 1979. Edit: Oh, I forgot to say -- yes, the Misha tears were amazing! If you watch any of the late-1970s/early 1980s Soviet parades in Red Square, they also do some amazing things like that with paper, or cloth, or even people's clothing (red on one side, white on the other, so when they turn around, it changes). I've always been impressed with what they could do with lots of people in the days before CG. . .

Keep in mind many Russians that day felt very ostracized for the fact the United States and other countries boycotted the Olympics due to tensions with the Soviet Union not pulling out of Afghanistan. The tears down Mischa’s cheek was also a response to possibility of a terrorist attack given several books were found with the plot line occurring at the 1980 Moscow games.It’s amazing we as Americans took a stance to boycott because of that yet we had no problem attending the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany knowing their anti Semitic policies towards who could compete in the games. I was not alive during the 1980 Moscow games but I honestly feel maybe if we had participated maybe things could of been different for us and Russia?
