  • We stumbled into heaven on earth today in Indonesia. Bira is a small town in South Sulawesi Indonesia that is known for white beaches and Phinisi boat building. We made a raodtrip for 5 hours from Makassar out here to Bira and we cannot be any happier with that decision.
    Welcome to Bira, Sulawesi, Indonesia.

if you rent a car from Makassar it should be via Gowa district then Malino from Malino you can go to Bira via my village Sinjai district then to Bira, so the distance can be closer.
The cost of renting your car is quite cheap, because now the cost of a car per person is around 100 thousand rupiah.

Hi Luke and Naomi, Bira is known for its people with the skill to build wooden ships known as "Phinisi" where in the past they sailed to as far as Madagascar. I used to visit this area around 40 years ago when I was posted in Makassar as young water engineer. I hope you enjoy the adventure in Sulawesi. If you plan to go north, don't miss Tana Toraja, a place with its unique culture...

Hey Luke and Naomi... The area around there is not far from the Phinisi shipbuilding area. You can visit that place.. 👍

Mostly local South Sulawesi People come to Bira. Why didnt many tourist or Indonesian people go there? because there are many beautiful beaches in other part of Indonesia easy to reach than to Bira. But Bira and Selayar Island are famous for international diver because they can dive in all season. One of the most beautiful place near Bira or Selayar Island is TAKABONERATE National Park. It was the biggest Atol area in Indonesia. The snorkleing and diving spot are stunning. But its not easy to reach Takabonerate, you should join local tour in Selayar Island and spend almost 5 hours by wooden boat to main area. Actually Sulawesi island has many beautiful beaches and National Park such as Takabonerate, Wakatobi, Togean, Labengki - Sombori, Bunaken, Likupang, Gorontalo etc.

My advice, like yesterday, is that if you want to go to a strange place, meaning there are lots of tourists who don't know, you should look for a local guide who understands the location because we want everything to end happily. And don't let something happen like what happened to a tourist from Poland who was lost in the forest a year ago, causing a village to panic.

Mostly tourist will visit Toraja land and North Sulawesi so yes...the other places of Sulawesi are barely known to tourist, not only for foreigners but also for Indonesian. But Sulawesi is rich in beautiful beaches and cultures. Although the facilities in other than those two places mentioned above are not really great, hope you guys still enjoy your stay in Sulawesi.

Hi guys, welcome to South Sulawesi, glad you guys made it here. While you are in South Sulawesi and especially in Bira now, i would recommend you to go to a village where the famous PHINISI BOAT constructed, its so close from Bira actually (you can ask people there and they will show you the way to go). Next destination is Selayar Island (its 2 hours crossing from Bira tier). There are many places there you can explore (hills, beaches). For your information, Kristian Hansen (a youtuber too is now there), maybe you guys can make contact with him in order to have some insight. By the way, please be careful riding bike there since the road is not too good and many ups and downs along the way.

Talking about motorcycle, though. If you guys don't used to ride it in your country, it is better using the regular/"small" one motorcycle. The one you've got is the regular one. There are the big one such as PCX type from Honda or Nmax type from Yamaha, but those are too heavy and bulky. The steering is less flexible, feels like riding a car because of the bulkiness. The slim/small one is lighter and easier to ride.👌🏻

Some days ago a hotel security from certain hotel in Bali, kicked out some tourists from the beach in front of their hotel
Of course it's going viral on social media
And the hotel got slap on the wrist by the local government to never do that again
