This video helped me ALOT! I purchased my 2013 Yamaha Super Tenere used with 14000 mls on it. Within a year and about 20000 miles on it I noticed a vibration at ABOUT 3000 RPM. I took it to my local dealer and the service advisors said they could not notice any vibrations. One of the service writers even had the same model and year bike as mine and said he did not believe there was anything abnormal with my bike. Of course I knew this to be untrue and was about to sell the bike before something blew up! Then I found this video and bought all parts the same place you did using same part numbers you did (saving a lot of money from what dealer pricing was) and following you directions replaced everything. Now I still have the bike I love and will be setting off on a cross country trip across US with peace of mind. Also I will be bringing my old basket to the dealership to educate them on the situation so the next person who has this problem does not have to be looked at like they are either on drugs or need to be. And yes the springs on the basket were loose. I use your videos all the time and they are super helpful! THANK YOU!!
Really nice video....My 2012 has already 140k km, and luckily no clutch problems yet.....but if they show up, I now know how to do it without throwing money away ;)
The quality of this video is absolutely awesome! I hope you make more videos 👍 I arrived at your channel because of your valve clearance video on the Super Ten.
Excellent presentation - clear, concise expression and a clean and professional procedure, I feel like I can do this! Thanks for the guidance! The only tricky part for me is the very thin wire that goes in in the initial replacement process, I am not totally clear on that part but hopefully it will become obvious as I go along. I have subscribed and highly recommend your video to others who would take on this project, and I look forward to your full service video. Great Work, keep it up, it's so very helpful.
Thanks for watching ☺️ I do have an almost full service video on my channel. Just keep in mind that there is no need for thread locking on brakes. To replace the front pads use the second procedure I show not the one were I take off the callipers. Put some paper into the throttle bodies while changing spark plugs.
I have a 2013. Cruise two up with my wife at 2800, 3000 rpm a lot. Not vibrations or rattle. Just turned over 20k miles. Nice job, looks like a great product , just don’t see the need. Electronic cruise would be a upgrade before this for me. Unless I had vibration ect.
@@Freedomachine I had the same problem with vibrations when I bought my 2010 Yamaha Super Tenere XT1200Z back in Cornwall, and everyone was blaming me for being weird, now I can rub this video on their faces, lol. Great video! The only thing I would have done differently is to use new oil and filter, but this is a really good, informative video, I will look forward to your other videos.
Thanks for watching😊 The original oil was new and I stored it safely during the operation. I put this back in to flush any debris and new oil went in few miles later. I failed to mention that.
Interesting video, my 5VY R1 has four rivets holding the basket to the gear, yours has more, could it be a revision yamaha should of looked into long ago?
what size socket did you need for braking the nut lose? Love the video, will be changing my basket in the next couple weeks. Also would love the to ride the road you're on at the end of the video, looks amazing.
Sorry for not replying earlier, I moved home and I'm dealing with a number of things. Unfortunately this is not even written in the manual. They call it clutch boss nut. It was in te 20mm region. Don't remember exactly.
Well done. I am also going to do this as I find the intrusive vibe spoils what is otherwise a very capable bike. Can you just buy the clutch basket and not new plates too? My bike has under 10000 miles and clutch is perfect.
First of all, you make great videos. Have you heard anything about NEW YAMAHA XTZ1200 CLUTCH SPRING CONVERISON KIT from Barnett performance and products?
Thank you very much! From what I know the Barnett conversion kit refers to the pressure plate and not the damping springs inside the basket. I'm not sure if the conversion kit will improve much the dynamics of how the clutch engages but I suppose it will be better.
I've just bought my second ST1200 the first one was a 2013 std and now I have a 2014 (full digital new dash) but while driving in 6th gear and around 4000rpm i can hear a clunck noise comes from the engine anyway... from your knowledge, there is any chance of this year still have the springs clutch basket or can you indicate any other reason to that noise??? My bike has only 30k kilometers...
I didn't alternate the last fiber plate. Had to go back in. Wish I woulda seen this video. I did mine in 2013. before the video. I don't remember removing the wire when I changed mine. I woulda probably total it.
01:45 Is the movement of the springs normal? I have a Yamaha FZ07/MT07 and one of those springs are moving just a little bit. Would it cause trouble at the future? Very instructional and helpfull video btw.
No the movment will eventually get worse and start to vibrate so that you can feel it and it will be annoying. I know only of one failure due to this problem but it was at high milage. I think it was 150,000km. Nevertheless I would probably fix it to be sure and it might improve you ride. I'm not sure how bad it gets on your model of bike.
@@Freedomachine It's only moving a little bit. My bike is at 19.000KM i'm thinking about selling it around 30.000 km's. Would it cause any problem until 30.000 km's?
Did you have to bleed the clutch system after the basket swap? I did the same but now it's hard to find neutral and it feels like the clutch doesn't fully disengage even if the lever is pulled all the way in, as if the bike wants to move slightly forward
@@Freedomachine Im 99% sure i put that ball/bearing exactly where it was. I pulled the lever before putting the cover back on and everything seemed to be working properly, so I don't get it. I changed the old friction/steel plates to new after market ones from offtheroad.de, maybe the bike doesn't like the new set of plates I guess I will have to open it again and hopefully I'll figure the culprit. Thank you so much for the reply and your awesome videos 🙏 Stay free💪
Does your clutch lever built pressure slowly after installation ?..i did mine and at the end I found the clutxh lever had no pressure..i did something wrong?
Something went wrong during your installation. Did you by any chance loose that bearing ball sitting in the middle? I show it in the video. I recommend you go through it again and make sure you got it right.
@@Freedomachine did you press the pressure plate when you installed it or you simply attached it.. i dont know if there is a difference... sorry for my English i write you from greece Athens..
@freedommachine Hi. Thanks for the video. Correct me if i am wrong, but as i see it, what they change was, they totally removed the damper springs and fix the hole basket together? i have a FZ6 and i had a R1, and on both bikes the clutch basket is the same with springs, and at least on the R1 i got the springs failed once so it rattled horrible, i changed the entire basket because of this, and i am starting to get a noise on the FZ6 that i cannot pin point so i am starting to think is the clutch basket too, so all these bikes have the same problem for years? What is the purpose of those springs anyway, i dont see what is the purpose on damping the connection between crankshaft and clutch. SO maybe, they realized this too and removed them? So in sumary Maybe is safe to say that as a permament fix, you can modify the clutch basket with screws so is fixed too? Thanks.
Hi. Now instead of the springs there are rubber dampers and these are enclosed completely in the basket so you cannot see them. The damping effect is there to avoid a solid connection between the transmission and the engine. It reduces vibrations and it softens the clutch response during engagement.
Thanks for watching☺️ As you say tyres very often cause vibration but in that case it is speed related whereas the clutch issue is engine rpm related so you can distinguish the two issues really quickly. In regards to the 2017 model, well you are talking about the last years of development that the ST had and by then it was pretty much perfect.
Thanks for this. Was it worth $600 to kill the vibration? In future videos, include wrench sizes please. Take a total of 10 secs, but helps others to have everything they need.
Hi, thanks for feedback. It was worth every cent. Then again it depend how bad it is. If it annoys you and you can't ride the bike without thinking about it then you definitely need this upgrade.
The wire should remove clutch chatter. Removing it probably will not cause any major issue but I would not try it. Also during installation you really need to make sure it is fitted correctly. Some have lost the wire in the engine with expensive consequences.
Hi Brad. The clutch issue that I have fixed here is not causing any thump. It is literally just an annoying vibration caused by the primary gear being a bit loose in respect to the clutch basket. We are talking of about one mm of movement. Not enough to cause slack. Unfortunately I don't know what problem you are facing. Make sure the engine is not missing out. Get coils and sparks checked as these can get wet and misfires are common at low RPM.
@@Freedomachine Thank you. I have a 12 which seems to be plagued with all kinds of issues. Put iridium plugs in last year. I'm leaning towards the cam chain tensioner going bad.
On a crosstourer VFR1200X 98.000km should we check also the Clutch ??? There is No vibration or smh but just check up, or maybe not touching is better since is no problem?
Freedomachine ok!!! The man who sold the bike 98.219km to my work colleague says he did just maintenance one time drive shaft recall by Honda and he changed tyres and lights (LED) and nothing else was done. And yes the price was 4.700€, that’s a lottery 50/50 after buying we started to looking for ,, stones under water’´ but the bike is really bomb proof. From the beginning we were looking for Yamaha but the expensive price moved us to Honda. Still not bad thx and stay safe
If you want something reliable it's either Yamaha or Honda and Japanese in general. So no surprise the bike is bomb proof. Enjoy your ride and don't worry l would say. Just keep an eye out for oil consumption as all old engines will consume a little.
Hi. Thanks for watching. It was www.partzilla.com. I had to pay customs and it was 120€. Considering all the other parts I ordered this was still cheaper. I did see the UK part and I found it a bit of a joke.
@@Freedomachine Great I actually, by pure accident, managed to message partzilla about the parts yesterday. :) THX for clarifying, Ride Safe :D Great vid and very helpful, don't stop, keep uploading :)
Because even including import charges it still turned out being cheaper. A clutch basket in Europe can cost you 600€. For the same money I got new clutch plates and other parts. Not sure how things have changed in the current political situation. Import charges were around 100€.
I just priced this up, €852... bloody hell... haha, just the PRI DRVN GEAR costs more than this whole list... How long did it take you, I mean, real time? 1-2-3 hours? My local dealership charges €85/hour... I couldn't find any small garage here in Rotterdam. Thank you for the list regardless how much II cry seeing these prices.;)) But yes, definitely cheaper than getting a newer bike.;))
@@Freedomachine Thank you! That gives me hope... % wise, how do you feel, how much of the vibration is gone? It is killing me in he Netherlands, because the speed limit is 100kph, and that is just around 3000-3300rpm. If you still have the bike and without cruise control, look up the kaoko bar end cruise control products. It is not the most accurate thing in the world as it is based on friction and not electronical, but gives enough time to the hand to rest a bit. It serves as a weight as well.
I hated it before. The vibes were really annoying me. I was always trying to stay away from the 3000rpm. It is a problem that can be more or less bad depending on the milage that the bike has. If you cannot stand it then you will be very pleased by the result. I still have it and it is the best bike for me. I love it. Thanks for the advice. I'll check it out.
@@Freedomachine This is the one I have ordered from Motorkledingstore.nl Product code: Kaoko Yam630 (SD-184 2122) €103 It sounds good, I hope I can do it this year.;))
Amazing video man! Simple and effective! I was wondering if I should do this. That vibe is really annoying! I'm trying to stay out of 3000 rpm. Question: If I only get the new basket, will it still work? Does it really look like a new motorcycle model? I just rode a 2016 model and this bike is sweet. I'm a little worried about the final result! That thing is too expensive in Brazil! Thanks for sharing! Check out my ST1200 videos! m.th-cam.com/users/AltieresGomes
@@Freedomachine It gives you exactly the same result, mine hade the vibration at 2.5 to 3 rpm and is now gone and revs more smoothly no more rattles....
@@Freedomachine My Friend, the excellent video, but if you put the discs and parts in the used oil in an open container, during that time that oil received impurities and then you put the same oil in the engine, the minimum was to have placed new oil and filter , if that oil was already black, but the motorcycle is yours, and you know how to take care of it, the tutorial is appreciated from the rest
@@pedrodiazjohnson8629 the disks go inside the bike so even the new oil will get in contact with them. The container was placed somewhere safe and covered. Most people use new oil to put the disks inside to soak and then they put the same oil into the bike. There is no difference. Also the oil filter is there to catch the impurities if there are any. I'm working on a tight budget and replacing the oil after few 100km makes no sense to me.

Hello, I am from Argentina and I am looking for the xt1200z clutch basket year 2010. I can't find it in Argentina, can you help me buy it?
Super!
Grazie!!!!!!!!!!! Grazie 🙏
Bravo
Buen vídeo amigo.
Did you have to bleed the clutch system after the basket swap? I did the same but now it's hard to find neutral and it feels like the clutch doesn't fully disengage even if the lever is pulled all the way in, as if the bike wants to move slightly forward
..I also changed to new (friction/steel) plates but it seems that I forgot to place the last friction plate offset, i.e one notch to the right🤦♂️
No need to bleed clutch fluid. Did you put everything back in the right order? There is that little ball. Did you put that one back?
@@Freedomachine Im 99% sure i put that ball/bearing exactly where it was. I pulled the lever before putting the cover back on and everything seemed to be working properly, so I don't get it. I changed the old friction/steel plates to new after market ones from offtheroad.de, maybe the bike doesn't like the new set of plates I guess I will have to open it again and hopefully I'll figure the culprit. Thank you so much for the reply and your awesome videos 🙏 Stay free💪
Hope you get it sorted. Mine was perfect after I did that job but all parts were OEM.
I did it twice because i believe i did something wrong... Nope the same happend again but slowly the lever came back to the tension it had before....
Hmm odd. Wouldn't know what happens there but I'm glad it is working now. I didn't touch it since. It has been very reliable after that.
@@Freedomachine did you press the pressure plate when you installed it or you simply attached it.. i dont know if there is a difference... sorry for my English i write you from greece Athens..
No i didn't touch the pressure plate. Everything I did is in the video. I don't think missed recording anything. Check also the manual.
So in sumary
Maybe is safe to say that as a permament fix, you can modify the clutch basket with screws so is fixed too?
Thanks.
I think i am wrong. The springs are still there but just hidden right?
Hi. Now instead of the springs there are rubber dampers and these are enclosed completely in the basket so you cannot see them. The damping effect is there to avoid a solid connection between the transmission and the engine. It reduces vibrations and it softens the clutch response during engagement.
My 2012 Tenere had a vibration and when I changed the tire it went away. My 2017 es has never vibrated.
What will happen if you don't put the wire back in?
The wire should remove clutch chatter. Removing it probably will not cause any major issue but I would not try it. Also during installation you really need to make sure it is fitted correctly. Some have lost the wire in the engine with expensive consequences.
7up hell yeah
🤣🤣 Trust me when I say that beer isn't missing in my diet.
Спасибо большое!
Did the loose gear ring on the clutch basket cause drive-line slack? I get a thump through the drive line occasionally below 3k
That is annoying. The ST is one of the most reliable bikes out there. That is just very unlucky. I hope you get it sorted.
@@Freedomachine so far it has proven to be a huge pain, for me anyway. Otherwise, I love riding the machine.
nice very interesting video ... in my opinion I would have changed the oil ..
On a crosstourer VFR1200X 98.000km should we check also the Clutch ??? There is No vibration or smh but just check up, or maybe not touching is better since is no problem?
If the bike is smooth at all rpm then there is no need to do anything. Also only some bikes are affected by this problem.
FoxOn Commute - If it’s not broken don’t “fix” it.
Hello. Who did You use as a part supplier? And did you have to pay Customs as well? In UK just clutch basket costs 600£ WTF !!
Why did you buy your factory parts from the US?
Because even including import charges it still turned out being cheaper. A clutch basket in Europe can cost you 600€. For the same money I got new clutch plates and other parts. Not sure how things have changed in the current political situation. Import charges were around 100€.
Freedomachine Wow,I had no idea import parts were that pricy in Europe. Can’t fault you for ordering from the US then.👍🏻
I just priced this up, €852... bloody hell... haha, just the PRI DRVN GEAR costs more than this whole list...
Thanks for watching 😊 I guess that it can be done under 1h if you know what you are doing and you are not filming it.
@@Freedomachine This is the one I have ordered from Motorkledingstore.nl
Product code: Kaoko Yam630 (SD-184 2122)
€103
It sounds good, I hope I can do it this year.;))
Thank you very much
Sounds very similar to the Suzuki vstrom 1000 clutch issue.
Blood? Nah, I do not care :) This is so familiar :D
🤣🤣 Noticed it while editing
Provavelmente os engenheiros japoneses não substituíram a peça!
haha make s sense :-)
You are driving a Yamaha, You won't make much videos like this, because they don't brake down :)))
Старую корзину можно отремонтировать.
Yes it can be repaired but the result will not be as good. Thanks for watching 😊
New 2014 basket will solve your problem. I only change clutch plates since I was in there. Thanks for watching 😊
could have rebuilt the original and save hundreds
Thanks for the advice. I did consider that route but it would not give you the same result.
@@Freedomachine It gives you exactly the same result, mine hade the vibration at 2.5 to 3 rpm and is now gone and revs more smoothly no more rattles....
I meant in terms of being a permanent fix. It is very likely that the issue comes back as reported by many that decided to go for a rebuild.
Not sure I get your comment. Did I do something wrong with the oil? I put in the old oil because I did a service just few days before.
