"Pere Marquette 1225 is a class "N-1" 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built in October 1941 for the Pere Marquette Railway (PM) by Lima Locomotive Works (LLW) in Lima, Ohio. No. 1225 is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 locomotives, the other being 1223, which was on display at the Tri-Cities Historical Society near the ex-Grand Trunk Western (GTW) coaling tower in Grand Haven, Michigan, and both have the distinction of being the only surviving Pere Marquette steam locomotives left in preservation. No. 1225 was well known to be the basis for the locomotive used in the 2004 film The Polar Express, earning itself the nickname "The Real Polar Express."

@@nursestoyland Well normally, I wouldn’t expect a west-coast steam excursion star to travel so far to Michigan, especially during a time when mainline steam excursions were restricted on most class 1’s (way before Richard Anderson made it worse) and when class 1’s were overly packed with slow freight runs. I know this was done to fill in for 261, but still.

From what I read up that I remember, Warner Bros. asked the group to help with the movie by providing the engine's original builder plans for the animators to recreate for the movie (though some parts of it are inaccurate compare to the real counterpart). They even provided sound effects of the locomotive - minus the whistle - and other rail equipment for a more authentic and realistic feel to give the engine in the film, rather than just repurposing the same old library stock of sound effects and audios the film industry has in their possession. Which, in a way, was a smart move the company made. You don't see that many people in the film industry doing such a thing enough anymore these days when it involves a story about railways. For example: you just constantly hear the same old iconic whistle stock that originated from Canadian National 3254 when its whistle was out of tune at one point, every time nowadays.

    • @nursestoyland

The only inconsistencies were the front end and the whistle - the front end to match the illustration of the book the movie was based on, and the whistle, due to Robert Zemeckis' fondness for #SierraRailroad3 and #BackToTheFuture3... oh, and Know-it-All Boy's statement that the locomotive was built by Baldwin, rather than Lima. But visually from the smokebox back, the locomotive is classic Lima.

The question that everybody wants to hear:
If the Polar Express was based on 1225, then why wasn't her whistle used in the film instead of Sierra n°3's whistle?
And a curiosity: the know-it-all boy (from the movie Polar Express) says that the locomotive was built by Baldwin, but it was made by Lima lol

It's pretty much what the locomotive in the film was based on, but with modifications done such as the headlight built in the smokebox like what the Delaware and Hudson had on their steam locomotives, a 19th Century style cowcatcher but made of steal and of course the whistle was recorded from Sierra Railway no 3's Lima 5 chime whistle as that was main whistle sound but was edited for the film it had aswell as the first one being an unknown 6 chime whistle and South Simcoe 136's whistle in the part where rushes through the woods in the scene where the train ticket gets blown away for a minute or two.

Rumor has it that Robert zemeckis was attached to the #3 cause he worked with it during back to the future, so using the whistle was a little nod to that. And I haven’t seen it myself while watching the movie but people have said a flux capacitor is visible in the cab at certain points

What the heck were those university people thinking when they said “we don’t want an obsolete piece of machinery to study?“
Regardless of how old a machine is, you can still research how it function. Something like this would be a great way to show how thousands of parts work together to make the machine run. Not to mention 1225 was pretty much free, meaning all they had to do was make space for it
