5 Locomotives That Almost Survived (But Didn't) | History in the Dark

  • The death of the steam age resulted in the death of many a locomotive. Only a handful managed to survive into preservation. A few came very, frustratingly close to being saved for future generations to appreciate. But sadly, it was not to be.

    "The Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. No. 59 was a 23" gauge 0-4-0T steam locomotive built by the HK Porter Co. in Pittsburgh, PA in April 1941 under works number 7299 for use at the J&L South Side Works."
    "Norfolk and Western No. 2143 was a class Y6 2-8-8-2 articulated compound, or "Mallet", steam locomotive built on December 20, 1939 at the Roanoke Shops, and used on all types of freight service. It was withdrawn in 1959, after which it was sold and despatched to the Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal of Roanoke Virginia. During its first few years there, it resided with its fellow Y6b class cousins, numbers 2174 and 2189, along with an S1a class 0-8-0 switcher."
    "The Norfolk and Western Y6b class were a class of 30 2-8-8-2 articulated steam locomotives built at the N&W's Roanoke Shops between 1948 and 1952, numbered 2171-2200. They were used generally for freight service on the N&W, even on time freights (which is unusual work for a Mallet). They were eventually replaced by the EMD GP7s and GP9s through the late 50’s. In 1959, No. 2174 hauled a "Farewell to Steam" excursion, and shortly thereafter it was sold to a Roanoke area scrap yard, where it languished for 16 years, thanks in part to a manager who had a soft spot for steam engines. The rest of the class was scrapped between 1958 and 1961."
    "The Texas and Pacific No. 638 was a Class I-1b 2-10-4 "Texas" type steam locomotive built in January 1928 by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Texas and Pacific Railway."
    "A once proud product of the American Locomotive Company built for logging service on the Oregon coast is presently being scrapped in South Florida. Coos Bay Lumber Company 10 was built by ALCO in 1930 to log the Oregon coastal range up above Coos Bay, Oregon. The 100 ton 2-8-2 tank Mike was built as ALCO Construction No. 68548. She served Coos Bay Lumber Company and then successor Georgia Pacific Lumber Company until replaced by diesels in 1956. Georgia Pacific was famous for saving their retired steam logging locomotives and 10 was spared the scrapper’s torch. Georgia Pacific donated 10 to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in 1961 and she was used as a fund raising auction “prize.” The engine was repainted and brought to Portland, Oregon by Georgia Pacific at the lumber company’s expense. She was purchased at the auction for $1,800.00 by Frank Bayliss. Mr. Bayliss worked an arrangement with the Oregon Pacific and Eastern in Cottage Grove, Oregon for the display of 10 at the OP&E engine house."

    J&L 59 will remain a parts source for the other locomotives here at the J&L Narrow Gauge. We have used 59's driver sets under 58 as the tires were in better condition, and the saddle tank is actually from 59 as Benkart only saved one of the tanks when he had the locomotives. Having these extra parts has been wonderful and has saved a lot of time and money. At some point when 58's boiler needs work the plan is to rebuild 59's boiler and swap them out. Same goes with the drivers. Rebuild the extra driver sets and then swap them out. That keeps downtime to a minimum.
    Our current priority is constructing the new engine servicing facility, followed by adding an extension to the Tod Engine building for a backshop. Our ultimate goal is to have all of the locomotives restored but who knows how long that will take. Having good maintenance and servicing facilities is just as important as having the locomotives and we are working diligently at building those facilities.

    When I was a kid in 1973, we were in Roanoke and saw the 2174 in the scrap yard by the tracks. Got a picture with my 126 kodak camera. No fence, so we just walked up to it. At that time, I was wishing someone would save it. Just don't understand where the Roanoke Transportation Museum was on this one.

      "PHANTOM BRAKEMAN" !!!!! HEY!!!!! I had that paperback book from the Scholastic Book Club back in 1971 when I was in elementary school at St. JUDE'S CAtHOLIC SCHOOL here in Green Bay, (GO PACKERS!!!!!") And I still have it even now in April 2023 A.D.!!!!!

      Will at that time the Roanoke Museum was still privately owned and it probably couldn't afford it nor do they have the space plus by the time you saw them they were in really rough shape

    I noticed that Southern Pacific liked to donate old locomotives to towns along their routes. About 20 were preserved this way, and can be seen across the old SP system.

    Couple of (British) LNER express locos that nearly survived when withdrawn in the 1960s:
    - A4 Silver Link (the pioneer A4) had a buyer, but the loco was in poor mechanical condition, the purchaser wanted to run it, repairs very expensive, BR wouldn’t drop the (scrap) price of £3000. So the buyer pulled out.
    - Peppercorn A1, the buyer had requested one, but BR forgot and scrapped them all very quickly. The buyer bought the Peppercorn A2 “Blue Peter” instead. Then in 2008 a private coalition completed a newbuild replica of the extinct A1, called “Tornado”.

      Fun fact, Silver link would of probably been preserved if it wasn’t for the Manager of the engines on the East Coast, He usually set high prices for the engines unlike some of the other regions

      Don't forget 60026 Miles Beaver, lasted until 1968 but was used as spares for Sir Nigel

    Here's one you might want to talk about in the next video: Uintah Railway 50 and 51.
    The Uintah railway was a 3 foot gauge railroad that transported gilsonite in Colorado and Utah. They were famous for having unusually steep grades, for any rail line, at the highest grade on their line being 8% (for context, anything on a class 1 railroad over 1.8% is considered MT line). As time went on, and the railroad was getting more traffic, they needed bigger engines. They had started out with Shays and 2-8-0s, but that wouldn't cut it. In the 20s or 30s, Baldwin sent them a 2-6-6-2T, No. 50, purpose built for the crazy lines on the Uintah. As more time went on, the Uintah Railway was taking notes on 50, and soon they went to Baldwin and wanted another one, but this time with some design changes from 50. After some years of work on the Uintah Railway, they were sold to the Sumpter Valley Railway, in Oregon, where they were given tenders. Eventually, they went down to Guatemala, and in the 1960s, they were going to be scrapped. Several people and organizations attempted to save them, but it was too late.

    Chesapeake and Ohio 2701 was vandalized beyond repair in a matter of months as well as a few engines that were scrapped at Russell kentucky scrap lines in the 70s

    Age of Steam Museum is now Museum of the American Railroad and moved from Fair Park to up north Texas in Frisco in 2011.

    Age of Steam was evicted from Fairpark in Dallas, it's now in Frisco TX. Oh and that F7 still runs, they use it for occasional shunting work. Somewhere I have video of it running and the Big Boy being moved to Frisco a few years ago.

    Was hoping you would talk about the 2 B&O EM1 2-8-8-4 that were on their way to a museum to be preserved, and they stop at a yard to get new fuel ,water and crew and for some reason the yard master decided to make a new schedule for them and route the em1s to a scrap yard and there are zero known remnants of the Em1 besides pictures and blueprints

      The Sentinel did an in-depth look at that a year or two ago. Everyone has heard stories about one or two that were supposed to be saved and the supposed confusion that got both of them scrapped. It was pointed out that circa 1960 the B&O was in financial trouble and preserving steam locomotives wasn't high on the priority list. Each steamer going to scrap represented and infusion of money to the company coffers. However, most importantly, the B&O Museum as we know it today didn't exist at the time. I think what little they had was even closed to the public for several years. Where would they have put it? I supposed they could have locked one away in a roundhouse somewhere, but that must not have been a viable option. It is a shame one wasn't saved (as well as a Big Six) but given the realities of the time, probably understandable.
      Interesting what the British Group did to the Y6's during our BICENTENNIAL YEAR. You don't suppose they were "sending a message", do you?

    There is good news; with the exception of the Y6 and Y6b, all of these locomotives have at least one sister in preservation, J&L 59 has 57, 58, 60, and 62, T&P 638 has 610, Coos Bay Lumber Co. 10 has number 11, and SP 743 has 745 (which is the only one of the locomotives I just listed that I've seen in real life), and even the aforementioned Y6 and Y6b do have a locomotive that their sister in spirit that's still around, as Y6a #2156 is preserved.

    Don't forget Br Class 45 015. "Preserved" but left to rot. And rot. And rot. Eventually it was so contaminated with moss and lichen that it could not be saved.

      @@rapidraposa7327 At this point, steam is in the spotlight and has a cult following now, so there's good effort to save old engines. Even train companies like Amtrak see the value in steam engines and I believe they have a train yard dedicated to steam restoration.

    10:00 The funny thing about 743, is one of its siblings is still here. If darkness ever sees this, I recommend looking up 745 of the same class, because that one is still here. Plus it appeared in 2 movies. So at least 1 from that class survived, & it's the only operating steam locomotive in the state of Louisiana (which is my state tbh)

    People don't realize that steam engines are still put in danger when the city if Noblesville evicted the Indiana Transportation museum they tried to scrap the famous nickel plate road 587, and the only way to save her was to sell her, ownership was transferred to a museum volunteer and they worked out a deal with the Kentucky steam heritage corporation to store the 587 and their Revenna shops until a new plan can be formed for restoration. If they hadn't transferred ownership of her odds are the city if Noblesville would have seized and scrapped her as they did with several other pieces of the ITM's collection

    There were also Livonia Avon & Lakeville Railroad 17, Illinois Central 2613, and GWR 2861. The latter I think was the very last steam engine to leave Woodham Bros Scrapyard.

    If you do a second part to this, another interesting and somewhat obscure loco that almost got saved was NKP 2-8-2 #965. It was almost bought by the infamous Richard Jensen. But there was some kind of miscommunication at the scrapyard that owned it and it was apparently scrapped by an overzealous new employee before he could see it. The other 2 or 3 locomotives of his that were scrapped are much more well known. Its kind of hard to find pictures of 965 though, I have only seen 2.

    The story of Texas and Pacific 638 also reminds me of a similar tale of another nearly preserved steam locomotive. Duluth Missabe and Iron Range 2-8-8-4 “Yellowstone” 221, was put on display at Two Harbors, Minnesota in 1960 after its retirement. where it remained up until 1967, by then it had deteriorated and had been vandalized beyond repair. The DM&IR felt responsible and had it taken off display, towed to Proctor Minnesota by an SD9 and scrapped. It was then replaced by Yellowstone 229 and they also learned their lesson of value, as they would build a structure over 229, which it still is around at Two Harbors to this day. Close but no cigar for old 221….

    Correction on SP Mk-5,that engine is not a MARK [ala Aircraft],it was a MIKADO! Also,it was assigned to the Texas& New Orleans,(Atlantic Lines/Lines East),and there were 5 Classes of Mk's on the Southern Pacific! They found on practically all lines,at one time or another! Hope this will help in the research 🙏! Thank you 😇! 😇

    If you do another five engines that almost survived but didn't. I found an interesting pair of 10 wheelers from the New York Central Railroad that were built in 1900 and weren't scrapped until the late 50's and if I remember correctly somewhere it said someone was trying to save them or just one but they were scrapped anyway. New York Central 1290 and 1291 they're not interesting on their own but the history that goes along with them adds more character to the two locomotives.

    I hope they will have 59 back to how it was. But as for the rest of these steam locomotives, here’s how I would imagine what could’ve happened to them if they were not scrapped.
    Norfolk & Western 2143 and 2174: Could’ve been displayed at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin with a new tender built, and could’ve been in operation with 611. (And for those two other N&W Steam Locomotives, 2189 could’ve been displayed at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia, and 244 could’ve been in operation at the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, New Hampshire).
    Texas & Pacific 638: Could’ve been displayed at the Museum of American Railroad in Frisco, Texas. (While New York Central 3001 is displayed at the location that it is at now).
    Southern Pacific 743: Could’ve been displayed at the Arizona State Railroad Museum in Williams, Arizona near the Grand Canyon Railway.
    Coos Bay Lumber Co. #10: Could’ve been displayed at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad in Garibaldi, Oregon.

    I would put 3813 on the list she’s in parts but never be back together if I understand right she was going to be saved at the end of steam and the museum tryed to sneaker through for a overhaul Nd got caught out and the loco was to be scraped before saved as just parts

    If I remember there was a B&O EM-1 almost saved, it was hidden away by a few employees, but B&O mgmt. found it and scrapped it in 1959. DAMN.

      ​@@fanofeverything30465 Its not as simple as lubricate the wheels and roll it down to a museum. When the 2174 was in the scrap yard it was in awful condition , that includes drivers , everything that kept it from collapsing in on itself , and everything else. Lets say VMOT Wants to buy it and they do buy it. First they have to do a inspection of the locomotive if its in good enough to condition to be towed down to the VMOT. Lets say its successful. But , N&W 2143 right behind it was blocking the way for 2174. So someone would have to buy or scrap 2143 in order for 2174 to moved out. Then you get 2174 on the N&W track next to the scrapyard. Then you have to sort out with the N&W when you can move it and what trains have to be hold up so its a clear line for you. Then you tow it to the VMOT and hooray now its at a museum. That's why No , you can't Just Lubricate the wheels and move it to a museum.

    Another locomotive that almost survived is pennsylvania power & light number 1, she was an 0-6-0F fireless locomotive, built in 1949 by H.K. porter, but she was scrapped in November 2014 on a siding along US 15, lewisburg pennsylvania

    You think number 10’s scrapping was recent?
    There were two Danish steam engine that were scrapped in *2018* and one of them happens to be the last of her kind

      Also if you were wondering the engines were DSB E 978 & DSB R 946

    The norfolk and western ones are really sad because my grandpa worked for the railway when those two engines were scrapped He had nothing to do with the scrapping of them but he worked on an entirely different division the Buffalo division. But when I told them about Those 2 He did say that they could have preserved them or at least the Y6B.

    The one about the y6s is actually incorrect, there is a single survivor , #2156, a y6a which is now owned by the national museum of transportation in St. Louis, Missouri

    I can’t believe that British company, a FOREIGN company, who would do such a thing and move in and completely ignore the people in America fundraising to save both N&W #244 and #2174, and scrapped them anyway despite the funds already being there and still making some form of progression. When you said about that British company about when they said; “they wanted them gone” triggered red alert sirens in my head and I instantly got pissed. Those people likely, or maybe, had no sympathy for the locomotives and the crew that operated them, and the love that was put into them by people and those that built and maintained both of them. And it is especially sad about T&P #638 and SP #743. For the #638 because I live in Texas and the T&P is one of my favorite railroads, and I think there’s a lot of meaning to that railroad. And unfortunately a ton of T&P steamers were scrapped, all of the Pacifics especially. The #743 was also just, horrid, the way that the Louisiana city officials treated that engine is just absolutely careless, some people are just too careless, selfish, and lazy to lift a finger and try to care.
    Too many steam locomotives and locomotive classes are lost because of rash and careless decisions, greed, blind hate, and zilch sympathy. And some people are just so wicked and think it’s funny to vandalize a locomotive that took weeks or months to get built, and was operated and maintained by a crew that worked hard at keeping it running for a good number of years. Absolutely CRIMINAL.
    Dern’d shame as I would say, and it would piss almost anyone off that cares about what the locomotives and their crews did for this land and the other nations. My only wish, my only hope, like many rail fans, rail enthusiasts, and foamers out there likely all wish is that the memories of them will live on, and hopefully all locomotive classes are up above in Heaven and the original locomotive crews up there with the LORD Almighty.

    why would the Youngstown Steel Heritage museum bother with essentially a new build porter locomotive when they already have two fairly complete engines along side 58.

    Keep thinking about 2-8-0 class 29 no. 29.279 and class 44 0-6-0 goods engine, no. 44.021 both scrapped in Belgium in 2002 to make way for a car park of all things. If I remember correctly they were sold for the nominal sum of €1 to the scrappers in wholly suspicious circumstances.

    Hey darkness for you top five locos series you should look at the NZR F class a healthy number have been preserved and anecdotally could pull over 800 tones a lot for an 0-6-0 tank engine

    Yeah 59 will never be rebuilt, last time I checked they already had 3 of the engines (58 plus 57 and 60 I believe).

    The doesn't make any sense; the British in general are way more into preserving steam anything than we are; that includes locomotives, buses, trucks, cars. road locomotives, stationary engines.

      I can think of a few UK ones.
      Pioneer LMS diesel 10000 the first mainline diesel loco in the UK was slated for possible preservation by BR but instead scapped in '68.
      WR region Class 22 diesel hydralic. Apparently one was going to be purchased privately for preservation but the loco was scapped by accident in 71 or72. The group got a class 43 instead (one of only two left).
      The sole class 53 'Falcon' a prototype for the class 47 was scapped in the late 70's. I think this was due to agreement when BR bought the loco from Brush that it couldn't be used for revenue service (?).
      Dai Woodhams yard in Barry scrapped the last examples of a Class 21 and pioneer diesel hydraulic Class 41 in 1980. These were the last mainline diesels built by North British to survive.
      Class 74 electro-diesels. the last of those went in 1982.
      And I think the remains of HS4000 lingered on in Russia into the 1990s, but in very derelict condition.

    I'm from Louisiana, I live just a little north of Lafayette. I was so mad when I heard that there was a steam engine near me that was scrapped!
    P.S.: You mispronounced Lafayette. It's pronounced Laf-ee-ette, not like the Marquis de Lafayette.

    Thankfully, old girls like #4014 have resurrected world-wide love for steam trains, and many more are being set aside for preservation. Ironically, the scrapyards are the main reason so many steam locomotives have survived, because either the owners or the employees fell in love with them or just forgot they existed. Harry Potter also helped the love of trains.
    One major train company (Amtrak I think), actually bought back some of their antique trains that they had sold decades before and put them in a warehouse for full, running restoration.
    The future is bright for some of these old girls, but the mechanics that know every rivet and bolt of them are a dying breed. Maybe some of you lads in the comments here consider this as a career, it'll certainly be specialty. And specialty means big paychecks.

    GREEN BAY AND WESTERN 2-8-2 MIKADO-type D47 class, with unique 64 inch BOX-SPOKE Drivers, ALCO 1938 were scrapped in 1954, then 2 years in 1956 the NATIONAL RAILROAD MUSEUM was started , but with Giant Milwaukee Road 261 4-8-4 NORTHERN, and SOO LINE 2718 4-6-2 PACIFIC; but Wisconsin lost numerous Significant Steamers, like MILWAUKEE ROAD HIAWATHA 1935 4-4-2 Streamlined by Otto Kuhler; and Super classic f7 4-6-4 Baltics that ran over 120 M.P.H.!!!!! WE also want to build new Replica of the 1935 Class A-1 4-4-2 Art Deco Streamliner, and we started making plans in 2018; now in 2023 we can start to proceed.
