GK is really one of those positions where the numbers really don’t tell the whole story or even half because a goal keeper’s performance is really altered by the defense in front of him. Raya at Brentford had a deeper line and frequently more defenders. Ramsdale is often in charge of marshaling a much larger area with only 1 defender (at times) sitting in the other half as support. We saw how sitting a yard deeper last season weakened our defense (Holding in for Saliba). Brentford are a good team but they didn’t control games at the same rate as Arsenal. So concentration becomes a bigger factor. These are those things that don’t show up in the numbers and why it’s hard to directly say Raya is better than Ramsdale. They’re probably very close in terms of quality. But what I imagine is going to happen is it’ll put pressure on Ramsdale. He responds to pressure incredibly well. (Home vs away form.) regardless who is better now, they’ll both be better in the near future. I really hope they can rotate successfully and build a bond because it would be great to have these 2 pushing one another the entire time.

Post shot xg-gc is the closest, but it's not fantastic for measuring how well someone plays in one structure versus the other. Ramsdale has way more responsibility than Raya did as a GK at Brentford. Concentration is more of an issue for Ramsdale than Raya since Ramsdale is facing less. It's why Ederson has poor numbers but is always up for Golden Glove. The skills required for a GK facing middle of the pack versus controlling 85% of the possession is vastly different. And it's mostly, what's your one v one skill set.

He's well before GK peak years. Plus, he thrives under pressure. Having someone actually pushing him to improve will be good for him.

Of which I believe is something a team can get over easily, the culture inside Arsenal right now generally means most not all but most players will gel well with the team. On paper it makes sense. But so far Rayas distribution has been terrible. Vs Man City he only passed to men in blue shirts. He almost lost the game for Arsenal multiple times. Other matches so far have been similar. He’s just not what we expected

Isn't a weird that an experienced GK like Raya with some of the best stats in the league was not snapped up by Chelsea or Man Utd even though they were desperate for keepers? I know Chelsea are seemingly unable to look at anyone based North of West London, but they bought Brighton's 3rd choice GK instead ffs.

Raya is overrated, only saw him a few times in the season and he must have made 4/5 goals mistakes that lead to goals. the own goal in a 2-1 defeat to newcastle and at least 2 against them in the 5-1 defeat. I think he made a bad mistakes against Tottenham or someone who was live

Good comment, except save percentage and post shot xg - gc are actually very clear and do essentially tell the whole story for shot stopping ability
