- I could not wait to put this one out there, it is so damned UP! Just what I needed to hear and thought y'all might enjoy some vintage Stylistics in the disco era. Van McCoy was the horn player here and also music arranger for this song who also had a #1 pop hit success with "The Hustle".
Sweet Soul is a specific genre of early 70's R&B that was defined by the sound of Thom Bell and his writing partner, lyricist Linda Creed and their exclusive work with the Stylistics. Who could resist the regal beauty of "You Make Me Feel Brand New" that #2 classic pop radio hit that rivals the Temptations #1 rendition of "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" in prettiness. I love them both and my love of them led me to revisit today's artist The Stylistics and remembered their Van McCoy produced disco entry "Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)".
The band formed in 1968 Philadelphia consolidating two bands with a total of five members and they are Herb Murrell, James Dunn, Airrion Love, James Smith and Russell Thompkins, Jr. who united to become The Stylistics. They were out promoting their self pressed single "You're A Big Girl Now" when Avco Embassy came calling and signed the group.
They set them up with Thom Bell and then with the heartfelt lyrics written by Linda Creed, the band led the way with the #9 "You Are Everything", the #3 "Betcha By Golly, Wow", the #5 "Break Up To Make Up" and their final Top 40 release, the #18 "Let's Put It All Together". Other songs like "People Make The World Go Round" "I'm Stone In Love With You" and "You'll Never Get To Heaven If You Break My Heart" round out their spectacular library.
The band had decided to move on and did so by changing writers and production staff to Hugo & Luigi who got Van McCoy on board to put his polish on their signature vocal arrangements and released "Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)" on July 19, 1975. It entered the chart at #87 and peaked at #51 a month later in the US. The UK was a different story, the song topped the chart over there for three weeks! They certainly were on to something! It did peak at #13 on the Billboard Disco Chart but spent a measly two weeks on that survey.
It's such a shame they don't make music like that these days.

I am only 53 but the first time I heard this song back in the 70’s I was hooked and I was only 7!
If I had to pick a favorite song out of the millions and music is my religion, this would be it! Just a Perfect and Beautiful song lyrically and melodically and Excellent Job on the remix as usual.. Thanx Much!.. ;-)
I always admired the US for their musical taste, but for this masterpiece to only get to number 51!!!

OMG, this brings back memories back when i was young and dad in the military. Dad giving me money to run down to the Red Shield to get this record which he would play repeatedly and sing from the kitchen while looking at mum. He still looks at mum in that sweet way today and it's coming upto 58 years.
You can definitely hear Van McCoy's The Hustle very clearly in this song.
That's because it was disco music that used violins and arrengements that sounded similar in those songs...disco beat was the order back on those days...that disco sound was very distinctive....

WOW A fantastic reimagining of this classic disco track. This was the Stylistics biggest UK hit. It was a massive No1 hit on the Official UK Singles chart inlace summer 1975. Their Greatest Hits album was the biggest selling UK album of 1975. 75 was the peak year of the Stylistics career. Their string of hits that had begun back in 1972 would continue through to 1977 by which time the formulaic Van McCoy production had fallen from fashion here in the UK.
