Cousins was playing exclusivity game in his contracts here. Anyone who could challenge him for the spot were cut in favor of QBs that knew they were only there in a development/back up capacity and knew they were unlikely there to ever compete for the starting job. And we saw what happened because of that last year. And I think if Cousins does start the whole season, he will regress. I do agree that KOC took him to another level, but I think that was Kirk's ceiling. And learning yet another offense, coming off this injury, I will be surprised if he's starting in season 2.

I fee like people put too much precedence on age. The difference between 22 and 24 in the NFL is remarkably small, especially for a quarterback.

No it isn't. There's a huge difference in both mental and physical maturity as well as football experience. McCarthy is the epitome of an outlier in his apparent mental maturity at 21, but he is still 21 and has a lot of physical filling out to do.

I may have just realized what Atanta is doing. First the league gives leeway on tampering because ATL CEO on some committee or something…
Now Kirk may have impressed but he can only run in a straight line and will be 36. So the Falcons redshirt KIRK with the most pro ready QB and then when it comes time to penalize Falcons for tampering the NFL much like the compensatory pick formula decides “oh, we’ll they’re getting a compensatory pick for a guy who hardly played”, and penalizes falcon is with a 7th round pick instead of 8 overall and then Penix is traded for a 1st and third after showcasing he is the 2nd best passer in the draft class (according to Matt Waldman who rated Mahomes before the draft as the best passer he had evaluated) and Kirk becomes the passer.
Anyway Kirko is in denial about his longevity and undermining his own front office and already becoming buyers remorse for the falcons, maybe they’ll trade Kirk in a year instead.

When Cousins went down with the Achilles, I wanted him in the ring of honor. I’d like to take it back if I could. While Cousins would have been an amazing starter for another year, and MN’s chance at a Super Bowl was highest with him, I think he made a choice to pursue compensation instead of victories. That has its consequences good and bad. He wants paid as much as he can get, and I don’t blame him for pursuing that, but being in the ring means he has to be an unwavering cornerstone of the offense. When it was time to be unwavering, he waved on. I think he will have some amount of success with the Falcons, but he has to elevate everyone and quite a bit to get to where he was with the Vikings. Time will tell who won this trade!

Washington realized that continuing to franchise him was costing them even more than having him on a contract because the tag price increased every season he was on it. Most importantly Cousins knows how to sell his brand to a prospective team for maximum dollars. He's clean cut, a family man, not a trouble maker or a problem in the locker room, and up until last season he was very durable. When it comes to leveraging a team for a big contract, I don't think there's anyone better at it than Kirk Cousins in todays league.

You and everyone else got it wrong. Penix was drafted to be QB2! After what happened to the Vikings, Jets, Giants, etc., the Falcons drafted an insurance policy with a guy who is cheaper and better than 90% of the QB2s in the league. It sucks for Penix, but not for Cousins, he'll be QB1 till he goes down and Penix takes over and Atlanta still makes the playoffs, because Penix was the most day 1 ready QB in the draft. Insurance premiums always seem expensive till you need to make a claim!
You don't waste a top 10 pick on a qb2. That's just dumb. If you're looking for a backup qb, you sign a free agent, or draft one later. A #8 overall pick is someone that you expect to help your team right away, not someone you hope DOESN'T play. It was a wasted pick. The Falcons could have had Odunze, an olineman, or any defensive player that they wanted and really helped their team out. Instead, they gave the division to Tampa Bay, and even Saints fans are laughing at them.
