It's not that they shouldn't have taken Penix, it's that they shouldn't have signed Cousins, given their estimation of Penix.

    • @rice_frying_shrimp
      @rice_frying_shrimp 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +31

that's how I see it as well... given this evaluation it would have made so much sense to go after an elite edge rusher on the free agent market and spending #8 overall on any guy between Penix and Nix for the most part given that they are day 1 ready OR spending it on McCarthy and signing a guy like Gardner Minshew as the bridge. that team as a whole would probably have been better given that D-line and QB would have been addressed, unlike now where we have a QB option if Kirk goes down but basically didn't improve much at pass rush (also still no news of whether we re-sign Calais Campbell or not, which given this pick should be their number 1 priority if trading for Trey Hendrickson doesn't work out)

Indeed, it’s seems Blank wanted to follow the Jordan Love route and I can see it working but it is bizarre, Cousins will only be the QB for 1-2 years unless he is amazing which means Penix will take over at around 25 yrs old like Love but Penix seems like the QB that is ready now and doesn’t really need to sit for a year or 2

Here’s the problem. They always knew they had the 8th pick, and they always knew (or had reasonable estimation) that Penix would be there. Which makes it completely inexcusable. You have 2 unhappy quarterbacks and now an unhappy owner because the org is getting dragged nationally.

And what team signs their franchise QB and then signs his "replacement" less than two months later??
Did the Steelers draft Wilsons' replacement after they signed him this season? No... they drafted an offensive tackle to build around their QB.
Did the Jets draft Rodgers' replacement now that he'll play a full season? No....they drafted a tackle to build around their QB.
That's what successful teams do...get the best quarterback available and surround him with talent to consistently win.

Last I checked Atlanta has an entire roster to improve. If my team wasn't very good and they spent a top 8 pick on a guy whose primary role will be to hold a clipboard for the next 3 years, I'd be very unhappy. If Penix sees the field sooner than that it will be because Cousins got hurt or just stinks. In that case, Atlanta is still saddled with Cousins' awful contract while he collects dust on the bench. The very next day Cousins himself called the PR and medical group to set things up going forward. After he already agreed to a new contract. It had nothing to do with our GM, HC, owner or anyone trying to sign him. It was just cousins and him wanting to know things after he already agreed on the contract. Im thinking if they lose anything it's like a 3rd to 7th rounder. With the eagles losing less than what the Falcons do. So if falcons lose a 5th or so then philly loses a 6th.

Why not use just 1 pick now for a franchise QB to learn for 2 years then take over. Instead of having to use multiple 1sts and 2nd in a year or 2 to go do the same thing for a top 5 to 10 QB. I feel they believe they won't be in this spot again to have a chance to draft a QB of that level in the next 2 years. I personally don't want to give multiple 1st's and 2nds like the Panthers to go after a QB in a year or 2 to take over after Cousins. That can set your team back much much further than just the #8 pick can if you miss on that QB. The Panthers might be going through this right now.

No, it's not. Drafting a quarterback in the top 10 right after you sign your new franchise quarterback to a massive deal is the dumb move. And it's not like Penix is the next Mahomes. They signed Kirk because of what he's shown on the field.*** They didn't want a repeat of what happened with Ridder and want to win now. There is NO guarantee that rookie QBs are gonna be stars. The other part of that is you draft a first round quarterback instead getting the immediate impact players that you need to improve your team for that “win now” mindset??
***As proven by advanced stats, Kirk is one of the most accurate quarterbacks and is one of the best deep ball passers in the league, is clutch, can make all of the throws and throws his receivers open. If given time (actual pass protection), he can carve up any defense (ex. beat the 49ers, a Super Bowl favorite).
Did the Steelers draft Wilsons' replacement after they signed him this season? No... they drafted an offensive tackle to build around their QB.
Did the Jets draft Rodgers' replacement now that he'll play a full season? No....they drafted a tackle to build around their QB.
That's what successful teams do...get the best quarterback available (which was Kirk) and surround him with talent to consistently win.
Tom Pelissero said it best…."This isn't a relationship that had gone south. This is cheating on your wife on the honeymoon”.

And the rookie contract issue, so you wait 3 years, then you basically have 1 year left on his rookie contract. Sure the team has 1 year option, but the reality is if he starts in year 4, his agent is going to demand an extension. Its just what happens. A perplexing call. With that contract Cousins would have, quite rightly, expected the Falcons to draft to help him and the team win RFN. The fact that the management had to ring and tell him their decision while the clock was running is not a good look.
The only upside I can think of would be if MPJ was drafted for his trade value, which would be an insult to his abilities. The man deserves a starting role.

Bro they didn’t only sign Cousins to play. He’s a great mentor for receivers and overall a phenomenal locker room leader.
    Penix is an MVP guy

They were talking about Cousins leadership on Mike Florio’s show this morning. Word out of MIN was he’s not much of a leader.

@@shanedenmark5536 Do not listen to most Vikings fans / Kirk haters as they are morons. Vikings fans say they are glad that Kirk is gone, but they are in every comment section on Kirk or Falcon videos. His ex-coach and teammates all love him and were always talking about his great leadership. His Vikings teammates voted unanimously to make him team captain. also won the Bart Starr award for leadership. Kirk organized "moustache Monday" and "jersey day"?? He also gave a speech to the team that wowed players and staff.

They called him because they had previously told Kirk they may take a quarterback in later rounds.

I’m a panthers fan and I was genuinely stunned. They also have to pay penix a fully guaranteed contract. The only way that this works out for the falcons is if kirko has an amazing season, fully healthy, and then demands a trade so that the falcons could get somewhat of a return for him.

    What was Kirk’s reactions?
There’s only ever two answers to that question. Either they respond that the player getting replaced was supportive which means he was content, or they say it’s private/personal which means he was royally pissed off.
