Nina Burmi uses her smooth three-octave vocal range to explore the thumri style - a semi-classical genre intimately connected with dance, poetry, and drama.
    Learn more about the music:
Thumri is a sensuous ‘light classical’ style, originating in Uttar Pradesh. The word is derived from the Hindi ‘thumakna’, meaning ‘to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle’, and the genre remains closely connected with dance and drama. Ragas are treated more flexibly, and songs are often devotional, romantic, or even erotic in nature. Lyrics have a central role, often being based on folk tales or classical poetry, and commonly depicting the separation of lovers, or myths of Lord Krishna.
Nina Burmi sings in the Kirana gharana style, tackling khayal, thumri, bhajan, and other forms. Currently living in the UK, she trained under the esteemed husband-wife pairing of Dilshad Khan and Parveen Sultana, and combines the latter’s wide vocal range with a more sparsely ornamented approach. In this song she is joined by top accompanists, with lyrics describing the tension and sorrow of a lover who is separated from Lord Krishna.
    Recorded for Darbar Festival 2006
    -Nina Burmi (vocal)
    -Ramesh Mishra (sarangi)
    -Sanju Sahai (tabla)

I’m Iranian don’t understand a word what she says but there is something magical in her voice that talks to your soul.
Every night I listen to this before going to bed Its like a meditation for me.
The the tabla and sarangi both are also amazing it’s like she is talking to them and they reply so beautifully the harmony among them is unreal
Love it with all my heart

Thumri's are designed to catch the emotion of love both separation and unification of two lovers. This one is based on the pain of separation between two lovers. The word thumri comes from the word thumkna which basically means to dance. A thumri is designed to make you dance. Fun fact Thumri's can range from devotional to even Erotic emotions. 😅

Some commenters who do not know Hindi have requested translation of lyrics of this Thumri to better appreciate the music. Here is my attempt to translate it in English fro Hindi:
"Your thought (memory) haunts me day and night O my friend. I (feel restless) dont get peace without you O mitwa (soul friend). (When I look into mirror) Now-a-days sadness stares back at me. The pain Separation from you rains down from monsoon clouds. Let me be united with my Saajan (soul's ornament). O my beloved soulmate O my Mitwa.

Oh my goodness, I have never heard music like this. My husband asked me about what I was listening to. I anseered, "It's obvious that her lover is far away and she longs for him so much that it hurts". Well, I had no idea. I was guessing. But that's what I heard in her voice. I can feel this music in my whole body, it's so beautiful. ❤

Southy here. Love the music of the north. This is ethereal. And Nina is impossibly beautiful. This is music and living. No argument there. Love me some carnatic music too, but this is so real. Love it

I'm an American who's long been drawn to this beautiful music. The sitar is great, but this woman's voice is heavenly.

This comment section makes me so happy. Im Indian and I dont know anyone who appreciates classical Indian music and that breaks my heart. But seeing that people from all over the world appreciate and are showing interest keeps my hope alive. We are moving too fast in time and are completely forgetting about our roots. Still hopeful...

The lyrics is actually a heart wrenching cry of a lonely person who is separated from her lover, who cannot spend days and nights and everything seems so intolerable to her , just his memories are driving her crazy.

I love how she enunciates her notes by moving her arms, as though she is physcially playing some invisible instrument that is controlling her voice. Truly hypnotic performance!
