Walk-up / Drive-in Ice Cream: Southern Indiana Style

  • Anyone for a road trip across Southern Indiana?
3 to 5 months out of the year, a phenomenon happens in Southern Indiana. Wonderful walk-up / drive-in ice cream places, open across the small towns, offering both high calorie, uniquely American treats, along with a serious dose of 1950’s nostalgia!
I have sampled about all of these amazing ice cream places, as I’ve filmed other TH-cam videos across the state. Part documentary, part food guide, believe me when I say, “I had fun doing this one!” If you don’t mind calories, these places are nothing short of awesome! You can exercise all winter,…

The Little Twirl in Livonia, IN needs a spot on the list. ❤ Been around a least since the ‘80s. It’s “blink and you’re through it” town but the Twirl puts it on the map.

(They are young adults now, but still love the annual trip with ol' grandpa). If you're in Southern Indiana in "season", a stop here is a MUST! Thanks!!

My mom used to hit the walk up Dairy Queen in Seymour when she was pregnant with me. Hot fudge marshmallow milkshakes were her big craving. Still there 50 years later, and we both still crave hot fudge milkshakes. So much better than plain chocolate!

Sounds wonderful!! If I ever get back over that way...I'm going to order THAT!! My mom (orig. from Bloomington IN) craved Chocolate Ice Cream with Marshmallow Fluff topping, it was a big thing in the late 40's! In fact, even tho it wasn't listed on the menu in the 70s when I worked at Dairy Queen, we would occasionally get someone who would order it. I think it might be called a Jack & Jill. Most times, only the store manager knows those special off the menu items!

Almost nothing makes my heart more excited than a Walk-up/ Drive-In! One of our walk-up DQ's in Terre Haute, IN was owned by dad's high school buds, and I told him I was going to come work for him as soon as I was old enough, however at 5 or 6, (1960) it would be a little while! 😂😉 I ended up working at the one on south 3rd, so I could work year round. It is now a Thai Restaurant and all but one walk-up in TH is closed. Frost-Stop and Tastee Freeze and Dog n Suds have been long gone. So sad!! Dairy Queen is among my favorites. I remember my very first DQ to get that unique tasting ice cream way back in 1959 in Indianapolis near Rural Street and East 10th.
Man! This episode makes me hungry! I have some strong desire to visit a couple of these "historic unique ice cream stop places".
Roger - my wife and I in late September of 2021 stayed over night at Log Ends Farm B & B in Petersburg, Indiana and ate at a place called The Fish Hut Pizza. We enjoyed it! Better than the national chain pizza places. Why I'm saying this is Southern Indiana's small towns have among the most memorable places to get that mid 20th Century feel of what makes American food " Mom & Pop" eating places, and hotel/motels so fond to the heart of most people.

      Hi Amy!
I removed all the Jersey Park videos. While I never said where it was, people figured it out, and were trespassing a great deal after 58,000 hits. We’re talking groups of people, nearly every day.
My intent was to preserve an untold history, not ruin it with people looking for souvenirs or possible vandalism, but the latter is what happened. I’m sure most people were like me, just wanting to view a unique piece of Indiana history, but it caused a nuisance to both the property and neighbors living along that small road.
Not to mention, it’s a very unsafe place with many hazards, including random pieces of metal, sticking out of the ground. The house and barn ruins could cave in at any moment. So incredibly neglected, it needs to be bulldozed to prevent further tragedy: it is beyond saving.

Some of the menus offer “coney dogs” but what they really mean are optional onions, atop the typical chili, shredded cheese and standard hot dog. They aren’t coneys in the Chicago or east coast sense.

@@AdventureswithRoger ah. Here in northern indiana if it says coney it’s like a sweet bbq sauce. Chili is chili.

So glad you sacrificed yourself for the common good. You probably had to hit the treadmill after this vlog.

I gained 10 pounds to make this episode: worth it!

I assume you will be reading this comment from the hospital 😂 lol after this adventure. I enjoyed this video, it was a walk down memory lane. I grew up eating at the Dairy Dip 🍦🍧🍨 in New Salisbury on many a warm summer evening. I have often been to🦜 Pollys freeze. 🦜

So much good stuff to sample! Making the video, I knew it wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but I knew it would be special to people that had been to these places, or ones like them. It was totally worth doing, even if my waistline needs work! 😀
