ITIL - Why was ITIL 4 needed? MKC Training

We're quite often asked, why ITIL 4 was needed? The main reason that we're looking at ITIL 4 was that ITIL 3 had been around for a long time. It was last refreshed in 2011 and was very much not up to date with the changes in technology.
As technology moves forward it was much more decided that ITIL needed to keep in touch with the new technology. ITIL also needed to become more up to date, look at the way the industry, the whole of the IT industry was moving. There's a lot of changes between 2011 and now, as we all know, as the way that IT works.
So, that was the main trigger really for looking at ITIL, looking at what was in it, and trying to bring it more up to date, more aligned with peoples way of working, especially with development, the new methods that are coming in development. We say new, but in reality a lot of them have been around a long time, they just become more acceptable, more Widley used.
So that was the main trigger for looking at ITIL, a lot of the consultancy was done, a lot of information gathered from different organisations, from public sector, private sector, small organisations, large multinationals to bring together what ITIL can actually bring to the whole IT service management arena.
So that's the main reason really that ITIL 4 was developed, it was just to bring it much more aligned with peoples way of working, the new technologies, the new terminology that's available. For example, in ITIL 3 there was very little if any reference to cloud computing, to the use of Agile ways of working and all of that is now a much more, in todays market place, an accepted way of doing things.
More and more organisation are looking at getting cloud services or using cloud services whether its software as a service or platform as a service, infrastructure. All of these different areas that are now becoming much more prevalent within the market place. So that's the real trigger for why is there ITIL 4?
