A Jolly little Rag here by the famous Scott Joplin, this one was a request by one of our subscribers. Are there any Ragtime afficiandos out there who can suggest some different pieces from other composers they would like to be seen played?

Good job ! Very clear and good tempo, I think it was a bit similar to Rifkin’s version.
Also you should play Bethena. It is, to me, Joplin’s best piece.

Thanks so much, and best of luck with learning the final 45%! I’ve always enjoyed playing Ragtime on the piano, particularly “The East Winners” the “Maple Leaf Rag” and many other of Scott Joplin’s wonderful compositions. Are you planning on learning any more Rags soon?

@@masterkeyz959 Hello! update: I'm finally done after months of procrastinating! I as well love playing "Maple leaf Rag" I've been looking at "Weeping Willow Rag" As well as finishing the Eb section of "The Silver Swan" one of Joplin's more obscure pieces that I absolutely love! Thank you for this very useful video, Your rendition is my favorite. Looking forward to possibly seeing more of Joplin's rags from you! Also how would you personally rate the difficulty of "Magnetic rag?"

With a couple exceptions, Joplin composed his pieces to be played at a slow (or, at least, very controlled) tempo. People playing ragtime too fast was one of his pet peeves, with many of his pieces (and his primer "School of Ragtime") containing strongly-worded notes warning players that "[i]t is never right to play Ragtime fast."

great tempo, this is one of my favorite joplin rags. i suggest letting the left hand relax more on the jumps and let it have some bounce, then you can let gravity do most of the work for you.

I love how the left hand bass kind of had a snare like sound. How do you do that? Im learning this piece and I'm unsure of how to get that snare feeling. Do I use pedal?

    • @waontheninja9017

In ragtime, especially Joplin, it is almost never right to pedal. The only Joplin piece that you might be able to get away with pedaling is Solace. Even then, you shouldn’t. Same thing with swing in ragtime. Some people like it, but you aren’t supposed to do it. Hope this explanation helps!

With an acoustic piano it's difficult but can be done with a midi strip.

  • @dipierro4

Great as to tiempo, rhythm, & syncopation. But the dynamics -- relative volume among different phrases -- bothers me a lot. Everything seems to be at the same annoyingly loud volume. And much of the beauty of this piece is lost because of that. I wish it weren't so, because the playing is excellent in so many other ways.
