Hello Andrew congratulations on being the first to grow British Baked Beans. And another first for Lincolnshire agricultural history you must be so proud after all the hard work? If only our stupid governments started to appreciate agriculture instead of house building. How far humans have moved away from the agricultural/countryside way of life in the 40/50’s to now. Thank you for keeping us updated with your videos of what is happening. We miss seeing the agricultural arable side up here in Scotland 🏴 since we left Lincolnshire 7 years ago. Thank you Andrew and team.
Finally all the elements came together to get the beans harvested. What a great advert for The MacDon header - quite a piece of kit. What a great video. You'll be growing Sausages and Mash next !!!
Hope the taste matches what we're familiar with, or better because they're British ! Huge congratulations to all involved in the project. Back British Beans !
Well done Andrew. You are a true ambassador for British farming. A other great video, I love watching them. I hope our MP's listen to you and help our farmers to grow home grown food. Many thanks.
Brilliant video Andrew! Well done to you and your team for getting the beans harvested and making the trial a success! Lets hope they go well in the canning trials and over the coming years more farmers in the UK can grow these beans. It is about time the government step up and help farmers with trials like these to broaden the crops they can grow and sell! Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next video :)
Well done Andrew , you are a true ambassador for British agriculture, great videos and let’s hope the Capulet beans make the grade , where are they destined for . Look forward to any samples . Thanks
Just found the channel & subscribed. From a non farming background, very interesting how food is produced today from a modern farm. The header on the combine, is that for beans only or can it be used for corn, rape seed etc?. It is a shame you cannot do a half hourly programme through the week on a main channel to show the ups & downs of putting food on the table operating a modern farm. People would find it most interesting. Look forward to the next video.
The header can be used on all crops but is not cheap. Over £100,000 if buying one outright. See update 174, we have one on a demo Case combine in wheat.
Great Video Andrew, Would be fantastic to expand area of beans grown in this Country to cut down on imports. We could do with a few more like You in Government, then We,d have a proper approach to food production instead of what we,ve got with a lot of people taken it all for granted. Keep up the good work 🙂
Well done to you Roy and Eric, you are both stars, if we had a few more like you two the farming would be on a definite course for home good production, well done again
well done a great deal of perseverance was needed doing something very new, especially in a year when farmers are finding our normal operations an uphill struggle because of the weather,
Well done Mr ward , a great job done in growing and harvesting the beans. Will be nice to see more farmers growing these , so we can produce more of are own produce rather than importing . Keep up the good work Andrew .
Mac Dom header doing a fantastic job but the land contour following wheels don’t look very robust. Pleased you’ve got harvest home with beans well done
Great to see the beans harvested after all the effort. Header doing an amazing job. Growing a new crop like this is so interesting and satisfying. Will be brilliant if we can grow our own and reduce imports.
Great to see the news article on Calendar promoting food production and the Capulet bean story. Enjoy the journey to eating your home grown baked beans. See you Wednesday
Wardys baked beans on the supermarket shelves now this would be fantastic for the uk market go on Andrew get them supermarkets to put British Beans grown by ward farms so us consumers can buy them great update again
Great to see innovation in British agriculture. Must be very rewarding leading this new uk crops 😊 let’s hope in the future the prices relate to the carbon foot print being reduced.. great video
A great video as ever, that header is amazing I didn't know about baked beans I would like to think that other farmers follow your lead and start growing them. All the best and Keep up the good work.
Another great blog Andrew don't worry about the tech it happens it's been a interesting journey with this crop it's nice to to see someone pushing the boundaries of British farming 👍
Well done, Andrew, and thank you, Eric. we all know now how much work goes into breeding this type of bean, and I'm sure that we can't wait to taste these home-grown beans. Another great success, and I can't wait to see field after field of these being grown.
Well done Wardy; a great effort all round. Good luck with the future development of the crop.. Appreciate conditions were thus; hopefully harvest dates in another season will make the crop more appealing as a viable break.
Proper interesting and informative! 👍🏻 Come from Ollys channel. Definitely subed, love it when you can see and hear the passion in British farmers especially when they share their information and make interesting content!
Thank you. Welcome. Olly’s a good friend, Look at my update 63,64 and 65. They are tours around the farm and explain how we farm and go through all the kit.
@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Funny enough the video I watched to first see you was the one where Olly toured your farm and equipment etc, what a coincidence 😂 I'll definitely check these videos out, among others of course. Thanks 👍🏻
Shame the plot combine doesn’t have a mini flexi. Have you looked at using a blower on the Header Andrew to stop the losses. If you look at Millennium farmer over in the USA he has the blower system on the Honeybee header and Now on the John deer header. Cant see any reason why the MacDon's ClearCut FD series flexdraper headers cant be fitted and stop the loss from the header especially when is on that angle to lift the beans being so low. Good job the new sprayer is not far away. Sods law the old girl was going to break down before it went lol. Good luck with the beans . looking forward to having some Wardys beans on me waffle 😁😁
Wow, how interesting these this has been set up and watched pinball upon a farm for many maternal farm please I am in the Southeast we don’t get anything like this on the news so yeah big chunks of the country haven’t haven’t had any of this information looking looking forward to watching the rest of this journey and how you do it next year that McDon header was amazing I can see why in America they have the air blower kits on it to lift the beans. Looking forward to next week.
Most of these dry beans I eat, under a different name, Harricot for baked beans, & Black Turtle beans... I would have thought those in the know will be able to have a longer stalk on the beans in the near future....All my beans come from Canada along with red & green lentils.
Hi Andrew, brilliant update mate I’ve bean (😂😂 get it) waiting for this update for a while and let’s hope you or other farmers can grow them in this country 😊
Is it we using wrong kit they nearly need a peaviner head to pick them up. So low !! I know the yanks use a blower system that helps blows them into the head. Keep at it Andrew bloody fascinating and a crop we should be growing in the uk 🇬🇧
Well done Andrew, I will be looking forward to you tasting the beans. I do hope that the beans will be growing all over the, country by other farmers. As usual I am here eating breakfast, maybe in the future I will be eating breakfast with Andrew ward's baked beans 😊
Great video as ever and well done with the bean harvest .. locally sourced beans can only be better for us and the environment.. ya video issue may have been caused by ya phone going to power saver mode and shuts down items to save power ?
Great video Andrew, 2 observations on the harvest of the capulet beans ive noticed in america they flat roll bean fields after planting to aid harvest as there scalping the field so less chance of stone damage and soil contamination, and air system on the header to try and prevent header loss with roll back! The latter obviously only practical if grown over a larger acerage cost wise! Great to see the beaming smile on erics face at the results you've all acheived through hard work and determination
Great video again thanks Andrew. Do you know yet what price you will get for them and the costs of growing etc. As its a trial plot you may not totally know. Tom
Thanks for a great Sunday update. Harvesting that crop looks tricky. That seedbed wants to be laser level to help with harvesting later doesn’t it. Looked great considering you couldn’t roll it in.. Risky crop to harvest if it was wet?
Interesting video Andrew. If you go for the Capulet or the others next year would you increase seed rates ? Unbelievable we import the beans to makes baked beans.
Morning Andrew & a very interesting presentation, you must be tempted for a new combine with that wonderful header (uk description!). How much are the Capulet beans, per ton, x farm?
Gleaning, think that's what it was called. Good luck trying to find a group of kids willing to do that sort of work ! Don't seem to want it these days.
We used to grow a lot of tomatoes around here but we hardly ever see them any more, I think they must all be imported, someone said Sth Africa more likely Australia. NZ has got expensive to do anything. Hard to believe 2 million cans of beans a day, or is that meant to be a week. Imagine the distribution network to deliver and the complex systems built around super markets, which I like to avoid.
Andrew, I think your videos are brilliant - there are always going to be technical glitches doing them the way you do, but the critical thing for me is to get them out quickly. No point having a perfect video coming out in 6-weeks time. My only gripe is the wind noise when you do not have your protected mike with you. It is great how you do try innovations in farming, I am sure that is the way forward for farmers.
Thanks Charles. The way I record the videos is very spontaneous, quite often I don’t know I’m going to record something. I might be in a tractor and suddenly see something but the muffled mic is in my disco.
I was thinking the same in upping the seed rate , considering how open the crop is you’ve done well keeping it clean too , it’s great to see you trying new crops interesting times

Hi Andrew. After the demo of the McDon header and the brilliant job it did, are you considering getting one of your own?
When we swap our combine, definitely.
That's gonna be one expensive combine.@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
Wouldn’t be new though, maybe 3 years old.
If this becomes a major crop maybe an air bar on the header ? Like the US use for soya beans
Definitely
Great video again thanks Andrew. Do you know yet what price you will get for them and the costs of growing etc. As its a trial plot you may not totally know. Tom
It’s too early in the project to have a price as there’s no real market yet.
Thanks for a great Sunday update. Harvesting that crop looks tricky. That seedbed wants to be laser level to help with harvesting later doesn’t it. Looked great considering you couldn’t roll it in.. Risky crop to harvest if it was wet?
Yes, some risk but have learnt a huge amount and have already got a list of do’s and dont’s to minimise the risks.
Interesting video Andrew. If you go for the Capulet or the others next year would you increase seed rates ? Unbelievable we import the beans to makes baked beans.
Definitely, need double the plants. The area with the black oats combined better because there was more volume going in the combine.
How does the knife work on that arc 🤔?
Morning Andrew & a very interesting presentation, you must be tempted for a new combine with that wonderful header (uk description!). How much are the Capulet beans, per ton, x farm?
We will get one but not for a couple of years. It’s too early for the beans to have a value as there’s no recognised market.

Are you keeping the old sprayer for spraying the Roundup save time washing out for other chemicals
No, we’re getting to much for it as a trade in to do that. Washing out doesn’t take too long.
Would a shelbourne Reynolds stripper header work lifting beans that close to the floor?
Not seen one work closely.
I think Andrew we should call you Mr Bean now😅

2 million tins a day blimey that’s 730 million tins a year that is definitely a market we should all be growing for wardy! That’s horrendous importing
Whats a decent yield for capula to expect in a better year? 4T/ha? Much margin over Fava?
I think that’s a bit ott, may be 3t/ha. It’s too early to say re price and margin and there’s no market yet.
Would a wind system like the us use for soya beans help?
I think so. Need to look at that next year.
Investing in a new combine for next year?
Maybe 2 years a second hand one.
Andrew what was the seed rate when you planted ,
Can’t remember and I my laptop with field records is at the office. We need more next year, maybe double but we do need to do more to increase germ %
