    Swiss here 👋
The Germans are very friendly, they are just a bit more cold from the outside. So when you get to know them better, they will open up, and you'll have a friend for life. 🇨🇭😊❤🇩🇪
I live about 5 minutes away from the German border in Basel, and it's always a pleasure to go there and have a good time with some friends.
Germany is such a large country compared to Switzerland, so I sometimes have a hard time visiting everyone. 😂

As a German the most annoying part ist the huge amount of bureaucracy needed here. You have to do so much paper work for every little thing.

Well, if you're one of those who are slow packers at the supermarket line: use a shopping cart. just put everything back into and move to the packing table after paying.
There you have space and time to sort all your stuff into the bags you brought from home.
Yes. Brought from home. No plastic bags!

To answer some of your questions:
(By the way, i am a german native 👋)
    1. Sure there are some differences between different regions and Cities in Germany.
In the rural areas the germans are very straight forward, very open minded, friendly, but also brutaly honest.
So if you act like an asshole (like disrespecting our rules [like walking over the street apart from a pedestrial crosswalk or with a red traffic light] or are disrespectful in general) they will tell you this straight in your face.
The germans are known for their honesty, so for example if you have german friends, they will tell you if your outfit doesnt suits you too.
But in a polite way and only to "protect" you from making mistakes.
In the crowded areas the germans are more selfish.
So if they dont know you, it is not easy for you to start a conversation with them or making friends.
Also it is not normal here to have friendships in your workingplace.
The germans in general separate professional relationships from personal relationships.
    2. About shopping:
When it comes to stores german employees working at the cash register are told to handle the customers as fast as possible to ensure a high efficiency.
The goal is to keep the customers as long as possible in your store (because of this greater grocery stores dont have any windows so you cant see the sun/moon) so they can see ALL offers and buy more and they will let you all the time you need for a lookaround.
After that at the cash register, when you have all what you need, they try to get you out of their store as fast as possible so they can handle more customers and sell more products, so the cashier in regular works a lot faster then you can pay or store your purchases.
German thing = all about efficency 😅
    3. Costs of living:
In the rural areas of germany the rents are not cheap, but also not expansive i would say..
The more rural it is, the cheaper it gets.
Citys like Berlin or München (munic) also are not affordable at all.
Besides of that germany was the most dependent state on russian gas, so the gas prices for heating your home and the prices for electricity were exploding (double or triple as high as two years ago).
Also if you want to buy food for lets say 2 weeks it can cost you up to 200€.
Two years ago the prices were cheaper and you could buy food for 2 weeks with 100-150€.
So because of the war the costs of living definitely were rising very much.

Many people keep mentioning German as the most difficult language, but English and German have common roots, yes, German has artkel and umlauts, but there are also common roots. I have the link for a reaction video for you here. th-cam.com/video/VebSZrHmsI4/w-d-xo.html As a local, what bothers me the most about my homeland is the shitty weather in winter. It's gray all the time, it gets dark early, it's light very late and it's cold. We say there is no such thing as bad weather, only wrong clothing. I also live in the north, more precisely in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost federal state and here it is exactly the opposite of the situation in Great Britain. The further north you go, the more reserved people are. The southern Germans are a bit livelier and come out of themselves more. But the North Germans are still very helpful people just a bit taciturn. When a southern German greets you, he immediately asks how you are. We North Germans just say Moin. With that, all has been said.😁😊

It may sound really spoiled to complain that you have to bag your own things at the checkout. But the main point of the guy at 5:15 seems to be, that the cashier rushes the customer often quite unreasonably. And that's something I also can't stand as a german native. A few years back most supermarkets shortened the space after the register, so there ist sometimes just enough time to put everything straight after beeping back in the trolley, otherwise it would fall off the short counter. It really feels somewhat olympic sometimes, as if they had to keep up wit Usain Bolt - no time for strategic bagging...

  • @anashiedler6926
    @anashiedler6926 ปีที่แล้ว +5

most americans do the packing things wrong. You just put it back into the cart, then after paying you move the cart to the actual packing area, and there you have all the time you want to pack and organize your bags. Don't pack directly at the cashier, thats too slow and will annoy people.

yes, but i am from the countryside and our cashiers are going like heart monitors, "piep, piep, piep..." but when i am visiting my brother in frankfurt and go shopping at an Aldi they sound more like a missle warning system "pipipipipipipipi" and the groceries are flying over the counter. it can be quite stressing, even for a german.

Let's be honest the food is one of the best in Europe from Germany! By law we have quiet hours and they start at 10pm in the evening and end at 6am the next morning! Sunday is also a day off by law and that means no noisy activities that disturb your fellow citizens, so drilling is then forbidden for example!

Where ever i was during my travellings in scotland i immediatly met someone talking with me, asking me were i came from and having a nice conversation. One of them told me, its because most of the scottish people rarely travel and having a nice chat with the tourists would give them the opportunity to learn more about the rest of the world and that he appreaciates to get to know so many different people and cultures personaly without travelling.
Dont know if you would agree with this point, but for me it made sense...

8:24 in germany its quite common to inform the neighbour if you are partying beforehand or you party somewhere else, one of the best parties I had was with my school class renting a "grillhütte" grill hut or small shelter spot in the woods on a small hill as well so you can be as noisy as you want and nobody cares
In general it highly depends on the area, but there is a law that forces you to respect quite times which starts at 22:00

I really like his channel and his informative videos. But you have to keep in mind that he mostly does interviews in Munich, often around the university district, which is neccessary to find a lot of variety of foreigners, but on the other hand it is often a certain group of people that is shown there. So the jury is still out on how representative they are for foreigners living in Germany. It would be interesting to know how many of them are living there for several years or are planning to stay at all. It surely makes a difference if they are students, studying abroad or people, doing and internship and returning to their home country after some years or if they are economic migrants or people, who simply cannot go back anymore. I think speaking to them will show you much more and more different problems

So, the checkout race... it´s completely true. I get super stressed as well and also know a lot of people, that feel the same way. Apart from the impatiently waiting customers, there´s also other factors, which make this such an uncomfortable situation. For example, the space, where your goods are put after scanning, is incredibly small in many stores, making it very clear that you and your stuff, after checkout, are an inconvenience for the next customer and better get moving... Oh yeah, most cashiers treat the scanning progress, like it was a competition. They´re so fast, that even with shoving everything in my shopping kart, I can hardly keep up the pace... I hate shopping for groceries here....

About the electricity prices: Because I had a rather new contract with my energy provider, my price was still fixed for the last year (part of the contract was two years without raising prices). However yesterday I got a letter about my new price: it more than doubled. So yeah, it's gotten expensive.
Also about Bafög, the money university students can receive: how much you can receive depends on your parents income, so even if your parents don't want to pay you, you might no get the money from the state, but have to take your parents to court. Also there are a lot of traps and if you aren't really precise with the documents, you might get it denied completely, even though you're supposed to get it. And it hasn't been updated in years, so especially in places with high cost of living it often isn't sufficient. So yeah, the basic idea is good, but it's implementation still needs a lot of work

When it comes to cost of living or rent, Munich is a somewhat unfortunate choice. Munich is indeed one of the most expensive cities in Germany, like London in the UK or New York in the US. There are such things everywhere. But as soon as you choose a suburb, the prices are "normal" again.

The expectation on the Deutsche Bahn is that it be on time. Not a minute late. Not 30 seconds late. On time is late. 5 minutes early is on time. The Bahn is doomed. You cannot run trains as timely as Germans demand :D Also, we like to complain. We're a 'corrective' society. Leave your engine running while parked, and some Oma will read you the riot act.

I find German history incredibly fascinating because the Germans and Germany were always there, but at the same time not and always different like a shapeshifter.
    Oversimplified:
Rejects Roman annexation - Teutons defeat Rome, are often slapped in the face, but Rome generally fails to subdue them
Create an empire that wasn't really an empire but somehow lived for 1000 years - very special and unique
The Kingdom of Prussia and hundreds of German States gangsta! Before being defeated by one of history's greatest generals.
defeat the French, unites into a new empire
    Get a colonial empire
Fight Europe alone and almost won..
    Is treated badly
Comeback as Villian, fights the whole world again and only lost because of own mistakes
    Gets divided again
Reunites again and is not allowed to be strong again.
    Also a few German inventions:
    - Incandescent lamps (Heinrich Göbel 1854)
    - The Telephone (Johann Philip Reis 1859)
    - The dynamo and tram (Werner von Siemens 1866)
    - The 35 mm camera (Oskar Barnack 1925)
    - Nuclear fission and atomic bomb (Otto Hahn - emigrated to the Americans during Nazi Germany, of course.. Are they lucky that we exist - 1938)
    - The ship chart (Jürgen Dethloff and Helmut Gröttrub 1969)
    - Periodic Table (Julius Luther Meyer 1864)
    - Jeans (Levi Strauss 1873)
    - The recorder, player - with which the first films were possible (Emil Berliner 1887)
    - The Aspirin - Which all great athletes felt used to relieve pain, And which saved countless lives (Felix Hoffmann, Klausi Alder.. 1879)
    - Spark plug (Robert Bosch 1902)
    - Thermos flask (Reinhold Burger 1903)
    - the toothpaste (Ottomar Heinsius von Mayenburg)
    - The coffee filter (Melitta Bentz)
    - Cassette recorder (Fritz Pfleumer 1928)
    - Teabag (Adolf Rambold 1929)
    - The jet engines - Essential for all jets and rockets + First war rockets V1, V2 of the Nazis (Hans von Ohain 1929)
    - First rocket (general)
    - The helicopter (Heinrich Focke 1936)
    - The first car (Carl Benz - With honorary Schnauzer - 1886)
    - Calculator (Konrad Zuse 1941)
    - First 3D film (during the Nazi period)
    - Fanta (Yes the Fanta.. Also during the Nazi era)
    - The typewriter (Peter Mitterhofer - 1869)
    - NASA (actually the US buys thousands of German engineers to build NASA because they can't do it themselves)
Well, as you saw, we changed world with our inventions many times. Where we would be today without the German thinkers art.
Germany the land of poets and thinkers - that's how it is known.
The problem is that many Germans are not proud of their country and blood, unfortunately also because they were brought up that way. Because if you say anything to that effect, you will be called a Nazi. The problem is that many people don't have the right deep historical knowledge that people need to understand the world and and that only Hitler himself and his party were Nazis. Almost no German was a Nazi during the Nazi era. Also, any historian will tell you that the Allies, primarily the USA, created Nazi Germany and WWII because of the unfair Versailles Treaty. Germans were so depressed that it is unimaginable for us. They were seen as evil around the world as they were blamed for everything in World War I. And when you have 3 kids at home, no job, money is worthless and no food and water you will follow anyone who fixes it. Because that's what the Nazis did in the beginning - they fixed everything and gave the Germans hope again. No German at the time could have known that Hitler was so crazy.
It's not as easy as we always think. Even in the Wehrmacht, only a few liked the Nazis. They were German soldiers dying for the country. the general German soldier, like my grandfather, had nothing to do with the Nazis and the Holocaust. You must consider this one army fought against the rest of the world. And if we are honest: what kind of "peace" could the general German soldier expect? What could have they expect after all the Nazi crimes and everyone thought that all German were evil Nazis. What "Peace" could they expect. These soldiers fought for their lives and German people against a planet. If even many of Hitler's own generals like Rommel (legend) or Stauffenberg knew that he was not quite right in the head. Then the normal people knew that even more. Many were manipulated and could do nothing about it. The Nazis were a small parasite not the Germans. Calling all German soldiers Nazis is like calling all American soldiers democrats because they were in power.
We should be prouder of ourselves, after all, Germany has repeatedly fought against the entire world, one time under a bad regime. We made this modern world possible and maintain a reputation for perfection and quality. The hard-working German with perfection in his blood! Or rather, we once had this reputation. Today there is no longer a country of poets and thinkers. We are still occupied by the USA. And people are manipulated and have no prospects. A dark age.
What I also find very interesting is that the Germanic people spread very far and are therefore the ancestors of many other people. Therefore, historians are not entirely sure how German the Germanic peoples were, but since they were the first to speak German and also create English, they were already German. In addition, the Germans were also the ancestors of the Vikings means Germanic mythology is almost identical to Norse mythology. Actually the same.
Our supposed "Green" government is not as good as you all think. Everything is going wrong in Germany and around the world. The fact is that the Americans, the government, wanted this Ukraine war at all costs. Because now they can do what they always wanted - they can sell us their incredibly expensive and polluting fraking gas. Which even has to be driven across the water. That's a thousand times more harmful to the environment than buying it from the good Russian. Now, decades after the war, they can completely esolate the Russians from the world. What is the fact? Fact is the West especially the USA brought the Ukraine war. What is another fact? Putin wanted to open up to the West for as long as he tried to get into NATO. But no, the ami who sees himself above all said the bad bad Russian! I'm a historian and the Russian generations went through most of the pain in the last few centuries. The attack by Hitler where every second Russian lost a person, ww1, then the cold war. And all the West and the USA can do is say the bad bad Russians, we don't want them! The US is benefiting enormously from the war and is delaying it specifically to weaken the Russians. Putin started the war and he's not a good one either. But the West and the USA brought the war to Ukraine. First the Germans were the bad ones, now it's the Russians (because Germany is now acting according to the whistle of the USA) and soon it will be someone else again. The West worked against the Russians for years. But the Russians and Putin wanted to open up. Who screwed up everything geo-politically? the amy. Everywhere war started the worst suffering for decades. Everyone can be proud of their country and I know that there are good people in America, just people. But I don't understand how anyone can sing the national anthem for such a filthy government that did everything bad in the new era.
I know many are manipulated by the giant powers.. but please read the book: how the West brought war to Ukraine - Benjamin Abelow (Was part of the US government)

German food can be really good, often it´s not. German people can be very friendly, more than often they´re not. The digital infrastructure of state and administration could be world-class, unfortunately its a mess! Rail services and bicycling infrastructure are a disgrace for one of the richest and "most developed" countries in the world. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark are several decades ahead regarding to that.
Italian and french might be the best cuisines in europe! On average germans spent the least money for food compared to other europeans.
Quality and the range of goods are far superior in France and Italy.
I am german, but if I could make a decent living in France or Italy, I´d rather live there...

What the hell is that for a dialect? Scotish or Danish? Jesus , thats a funny dialect (pelase forgive me) :-). Iam German and and really nice to hear, that the Germans are quite friendly. I think the Berlin dialect hears very unfriendly. My favorit is the North with Hamburg and Flensburg. Thanks for your videos!!!

Yes, its extremely expensive in münchen, baveria. And baveria is hated by the rest of germany because yes, they tend to be arrogant and treat foreigners and even other germans bad.
They are basicly a snob version of texas. Baverians live in the woods and think they are the coolest and best part of germany. Its a beautyful state, but the baverians themself are snobs and selfish and arrogant compared to other germans.
Also, for germans in general, we put much more value into being honest than being friendly.
Thats also where the stereotype in many countries about germans comes from, that germans are cold and unfriendly, but we are just direct and very honest.
In the USA, there is a saying "if you dont have to say anything good, dont say anything".
    This wont happen in germany.

Die Schotten wollten mehrheitlich nicht aus der EU austreten. Sie wurden aber leider von den viel zahlreicheren Engländern überstimmt.

Interesting to hear about the cultural differences. I am German, my kids half British. We live in The Netherlands. I look differently at my own country niw. I appreciate how reliable Germans are, but I am also more annoyed by certain other very German traits.

Its mostly nothing about arrogance but curiosity. Personally i just want to learn more about different cultures, so if somebody looks asian but speaks perfect german i would ask him about where his ancisters come from. Nothing bad in mind with this questions, so please dont misunderstand
