I’m old enough to remember when cartoon characters like “Mighty Mouse” would snort special pollen from a field of flowers (probably too close to poppy pollen) and “Underdog” not only carried his costume around, but also has a pill ring he’d pop open to swallow and become super powered. 🤔
If you search TH-cam you can still find cigarette commercial clips of the Flintstones smoking.

I remember this show from my childhood. A few years ago, I tried to talk about it with other people but it seems like I was the only person who remembered it. I found some compilation Eight Man DVDs at the 99 Cent Store a little while after that. I was able to show them to my kids and we all got a big laugh especially from the theme song.
The show has been rebooted in Japan as a live action program, I've seen the videos in some Japanese video rental stores, but that was a few years ago.

My father always talked about how he loved this show! I had thought Speed Racer was the first Japanimation show in the US until he described 8th man. I assumed the show being black and white had something to do with why it never reran as TV stations began pushing for color cartoons after 1968ish.

WPIX-TV in New York scheduled "8th MAN" from 1965 through 1968 (at least). The only reason why *they* stopped showing it was because other shows were being introduced in full color (including repeats of "BATMAN")- and there were only 52 episodes. It had nothing to do with "Tobor" using his "recharge sticks" that looked like cigarettes.

    • @jlovebirch
      @jlovebirch ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow, I remember watching this show very early in the morning back in New York when I was just a kid really young around five . It was on just before Hercules I remember singing the song all the time . I remember asking my father a few years before he died. I sang the song to him and asked him what show it was and he sang the whole song and said it was eight man . Right after that I went on eBay and bought a couple of DVDs. Me and my father watched a few episodes.. and my father started laughing, and said wow I remember the show being better than that.
It’s funny the things you remember

I too remember the 8th Man cartoon while very young in New York. In addition to the "energy sticks", the special projection map on the wall behind the main character was the first time that I saw the Goode Homolosine map in which the earth's globe is cut up into curved sections to reduce errors. Amazing what you remember from all those years ago.

The character was sort of rebooted with the "8th Man After" animated series. But, as much as I would love a new reboot, I can't see it being done well. They'd blow it. Would like to see what it would be like, though. 8th Man was my favorite cartoon as a kid and is still one of my favorite characters. And I believe the company that made the old Hercules cartoons made the U.S. opening sequence to 8th Man.
Can't forget about the live-action movie of 8th Man, too. It was odd, very serious and somewhat dark, gleaning influences from RoboCop. Would love to see a big-budget live-action done today.

8th Man was my jam! My favorite two episodes featured Samantha 7 and Pounce, the Robot Tiger.
My elementary school had two bells at the end of recess. The first was to freeze what we were doing, and the second was to move into our lines to go back into the school. My friends and I always "found ourselves" in the 8th man running pose when we heard the freeze bell.

Good to see an old childhood friend again. Excellent history on the show.
. In a way 8th Man is a soul brother to Will Eisner's "The spirit"
Lt. Hiyata was killed by gangsters then brought back to life as 8th Man by Dr. Genius.
Detective Danny Colt was killed by a mad scientist working for the mob, left for dead in a pool of strange chemicals , revived, and became "The Spirit"
Two iconic guys, men of the law brought back to life to fight crime and evil. Heck, you might as well throw in Officer Murphy a.k.a. "Robo Cop". Thank you so much for this video!😁

I have downloaded a bunch of the old services from TH-cam, and I watch it even now. There were some really good episodes and some had cold war themes, like when he fought his brother. The plots of the old series were so interesting.

My first brush with this was through the Neo Geo arcade game known as Eightman. There was also a later version done as an OVA called 8Man After. I know a bit about older anime such as Tetsuwan Atom (Astroboy), Mazinger Z (Transor Z), Sengoku Majin GoShogun, Mach-A Go, Go! (Speed Racer), Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman (G-Force/Battle of the Planets/Eagle Riders), Uchuu no Kishi Tekkaman, (Tekkaman the Space Knight), Golgo 13, Robot Hunter Casshan and Cyborg 009. They did do a few reboots of those series but they stayed mostly within the late 70s to early 80s. The ones that were pushed farther out were Speed Racer, Gatchaman, Casshan, Astroboy, Mazinger Z, Cyborg 009 and Golgo 13.

Yah , I can understand . At 5years old , this television series was my favorite . But what did I know ?
Then I started showing signs of abnormal behavior , and my parents saw it . I started trying to act like the cartoon character . And so my parents started looking for psychological help for me . Lots of psychological help .
I didn’t realize (who could at 6 years old ) that it was all a fake representation .
The behavior I speak of is walking , swinging my arms to match my legs . Not in opposition , like is normal . And thus began a systematic torture of relearning to crawl the walk like a normal child . No one asked ME why I was doing the behaviors I was doing . And when I started kindergarten , I stopped associating with other children . ( kindergarten was a new concept at the time ) . So my parents decided to put me in catholic school . Where I failed there too . As it turned out , I was just a bit slow . So they enrolled me in a school for the mentally challenged . But tarbar the 8th man , ruined my start to life .
    And you’ll see why .

8th Man, along with Astro Boy and the other classic sci-fi anime series were taken off for one reason only.....and a pathetic one at that. The die hard liberals (and I'm neither liberal nor conservative) in their infinite wisdom felt the episodes were too "violent". So by 1969, they were gone to be replaced by softee TV shows. Hence the de-balling of the male in America had begun......and you know how that has ended up 50 years later.

I felt that 8 Man was a great cartoon series that was used as a scape goat because the energy booster tubes Tobor used was falsely misrepresented as cigarettes to give young people an idea to smoke real cigarettes. The advertising agencies I felt was wrong in making 8 Man a consistent smoker instead of what they are used for. It’s sad that heroes like 8 Man was use as a scapegoat .
