The SEAL TEAM SIX DOG that took down Osama Bin Laden - Will Chesney and Cairo - EP 87

  • If you were to make a list of hero dogs of all time, I'm pretty sure Cairo, the Belgian Malinois on the Osama Bin Laden Raid would be at the top of that list. Well, I got a chance to sit down and chat with Cairo's handler, Will Chesney a US Navy SEAL.
We talked about so many things including how they first met, their training that ominous and heroic night as well as so much more. Nothing held back. Will is an awesome guy who really loves dogs and loves to share Cairo's story. But Will. opened up about some personal tragedies that he has experienced since that event. How he has dealt with his injuries, both physical and emotional and how he healed - and how dogs were a big part of that journey.

Hearing about Will's journey was deeply emotional, funny at times, but life changing. If you haven't yet done so, pick up a copy of his amazing book, "NO ORDINARY DOG."
Will's journey is amazing, and his dedication to Cairo, until his last day is a story you'll never forget. I think you'll love this podcast and love this hero!

This is an inspiring story. I just recently lost my dog to a terminal illness who I think was part German Shepherd and was instrumental in getting a cure recognized for canine distemper in her younger days, so she was a medical hero until another condition got her at age 14, and I've been watching alot of stuff about dogs the past day or so. Belgian Malinois have always been one of my favorites.

I pray he finds what he needs, and gets the help he needs to function as normally as possible. We cannot ever erase his reality, but I believe he will only improve from here. STILL, A HERO! HE SHOULD BE SO PROUD of the work he has done! I have nothing but respect for this man. Best wishes my friend!

An excellent book written in a very captive style in an informal manner as if personally explaining the events sitting beside. Cairo's description and his characteristics vividly picturised. A few photographs in the middle of the book are interesting to watch. The last stage of Cairo's life makes a tearful reading. A book worth reading by all book lovers esp by the dog lovers.

Robert you really did a great job doing this interview. You asked all the right questions with both true empathy & compassion. You traveled lightly when needed showing true sensitivity when broaching difficult topics. I was glued to the screen listening to every word spoken by the both of you. I realize the interview took place a year ago; I do have 1 question, not sure now if it could be answered. If a Seal handler, gets injured; are other members of that particular Seal Team trained to take over the handling of that K9?

Dang. I obviously never knew Cairo. But it hurts hearing how he passed. It really sucks losing a dog. Tomorrow I’m to bring my Doberman, Storm, to a demo at a mall. It’s the same place I spent my last evening with Tara before she passed the following day. So I’ve been worried about that. And I’ve just listened to this now. Bad timing I guess.

From your excellent interview with Avi Cohen about breeders, it is confusing. Because he was saying that you must get a dog from a top breeder but then says that a top breeder is not going to talk to us lay people, only deal with people they know! So how does someone who is serious about dog training, i?s willing to pay 3k to 5k for a great dog, GET a great dog from a great breeder??

    • @susanlippy1009

Have you not thought about getting involved in clubs for a breed you are interested in? They don't talk to people who have no experience because, they have no experience. Get involved and gain experience and skills then you will be someone they talk to.

Amazing video and young man...it is always a TEAM effort when anything like this is accomplished so I am happy to see his humility. My son just went through BUDs (2022) and let me say... The training is not what it was when this young man went through it. The SEALs training is now being investigated for torture and abuse that we are not even allowed to put prisoners of war through. My son experienced a massive head injury....severely concussed and being told, "Get up you pussy, and get back in line." No medical attention given... One of my son's friends died...google SEAL DEATH...symptoms ignored and if he had been treated he would not be dead today. Another young man spent time intubated and on life support in the ICU due to something called SIPE..Swimming Induced Pulmonary Edema...All after successfully completing HELL WEEK. We are talking about the healthiest, most athletic, and driven young men on the planet. I grew up respecting the military and police force and still do...this is tragic. God Bless all our service men and women. BTW...some of the SEAL instructors are being investigated and some have already been relieved of duty.

@@Snook378 if you’ve been through it, or have a loved one that has… do not say “No mam” to me. I watched my son go through it and everything I said happened. There are many articles about it. My son’s friend died of SIPE… treatable but he was ignored. I’m an RN and so is his mother… I know what I’m talking about. These are amazing young men. And the failure rate is 87%.

This is a good episode with a great guest but please consider having the guest in studio. Moreover, consider making it a policy that all guest must be in studio to be on the podcast. There is a reason JRE does this and I believe it to be critical.
