Other than Jennifer Hudson and a good portion of Jamie Foxx, those were the only two good things about the film. It was a good film, but not amazing either. Jennifer Hudson was absolutely amazing, I agree, but to take part of the best, there needs to be multiple things that were amazing. Chemistry with the entire crew, acting (from *multiple* people), character development, songs, lyrics, music, storyline relativity with the world, etc.
Did you really name Emma Thompson as a star in Beauty and the Beast while showing a scene with Emma Watson. I realize Emma Thompson was Mrs Potts, but it's a rather confusing celebrity citation.
RedRoseSeptember22 beauty and beast was boring. I rather watch the original amazing animated movie than the live action one. Don’t get me wrong I love beauty and beast and I love Emma Watson. But it is not better than la la land. Beauty and the beast is another remake. La la land is a original. The problem with beauty and the beast is you can’t remake a classic. And to answer your question la la land is not boring. It’s saying every single day life is boring. It is not stuff happens every single day. La la land is great film because it’s talking about if you are going to focus on your career or you relationship. So la la land is a great film that deserves to be higher than beauty and beast.

Caleb Brink its the nostalgia for the well known songs I guess. La La Land has really just one really standout song : City of Stars who I had is a great song. With beauty and beast you just couldn't help sing along all the songs while watching the film because you remember them from 20 years ago. Nostalgia is really a powerful thing. I loved the movie for it even though I hatted Emma Watson as Belle and didn't buy the chemistry between the actors but I loved it because I loved the old songs The new ones I already forgot them honestly. It's difficult to put the original Beauty and the Beast aside when the new one is so determined to cram nostalgia down the viewer's throats, with little to no original content. Actually, let me rephrase that: the new one has no GOOD original content.
And Mamma Mia! The 2008 Musical Romantic Comedy Film? I think it was the best that I've ever seen... PD: And the Phantom of the Opera was really good too.
j-dizzle time . How would it be bad? How this movie would be bad? If it was adapted of the famous Broadway Musical, of the same name, and based on the songs of the successful pop group ABBA? Beauty and the beast is so wonderful. But seriously, only an honourable mention for Dream Girls, with oscar and golden globe wins, and NO mamma Mia or phantom of the opera? I hope you've made a second list here!
Nope. Nope nope nope nope. Nu-uh. Wrong. Sweeney Todd should be SOOO much higher up this list, as should Chicago. I would've even put Moulin Rouge a little higher. And Les Miz should not be #1. Rent is an amazing show, but the movie version isn't that great. What's good about it is it kept much of the musical intact, except the recitative parts, which were sadly cut. I really didn't like Once, and La La Land is completely overrated. I also think Enchanted deserved at least an honorable mention... unless it wasn't included because it's Disney? I think the High School Musical franchise helped re-popularize the genre with a much younger audience. regardless of whether you think the actors are cheesy and the story cliched, you can't deny the catchyness of the songs. And while Chicago and LesMiserable might've been the first Musicals in a while to win Oscars, School of Rock had a massive impact and gained a cult-status and most likely influenced High School Musical in the same way
How is GREASE & FAME not in this list. Those are cultural iconic films. Les Miserables is a great Broadway play but did not nowhere the impact of those two films. WOW!!!!
I agree with Rent and Les Mis taking the top spots, but... 1. I thought you said "no Disney musicals". Why is the Live Action "Beauty and the Beast" even on there if it was co-produced by Disney and it's almost a verbatim remake of the original? 2. Emma Watson was terrible as a singer in the movie, and was so auto-tuned and overproduced to make her sound good, she sounded robotic for half of the movie. Why include a musical where the supposed star was out-shined by her cast? 3. Where is "Mamma Mia!" and "Phantom of the Opera"? "Rock of Ages" is also amazing. 4. "Dreamgirls" really only got an honourable mention?
Yes! I friggen love Repo! Although I actually prefer The Devil's Carnival and it's sequel a bit, just speaking personally, Repo's probably a bit more solid. And say it with me: Zydrate comes in a little glass vial!
I can’t believe they point out that “modern movie musicals have a tendency to attract big names in spades but limited singing range” and in the same list, praise Beauty and the Beast (Emma Watson, Emma Thompson) and Les Mis (Russell freakin Crowe). The hypocrisy. This might be the worst Watch Mojo list I’ve seen in awhile.
LOL this list is trash. The rent movie was a critical and public failure for a reason. 30 year olds singing about not wanting to pay their rent was laughable at the time. Beauty and the beast cast a lead that can’t sing.
Not mentioning Mamma Mia or High School Musical 3 is an absolute crime.
the first high school musical is better

Enchanted was technically a Disney musical, so it was excluded

Hairspray is my favvvv. Perfect casting imo for all the characters

The Sound of Music

The Greatest Showman
So glad Once made it on the list, it's a great story with hauntingly beautiful songs. This is definitely a must watch for those who haven't seen it!
It wasn’t 1980 Les Miz debuted on stage it was 1985...
I really do agree with this list but where's The Phantom of the Opera (2004)?
Off the list where it belongs
Ethan Butler they had that in their other list on watchmojo
It's not a good adaptation of the stage production.
Pitch Perfect definitely should be on the list
Where is Phantom of the Opera?! Rigged.
Who y'all there watched this because of the greatest showman
#1: The Greatest Showman
I think the High School Musical franchise helped re-popularize the genre with a much younger audience. regardless of whether you think the actors are cheesy and the story cliched, you can't deny the catchyness of the songs. And while Chicago and LesMiserable might've been the first Musicals in a while to win Oscars, School of Rock had a massive impact and gained a cult-status and most likely influenced High School Musical in the same way
Christo Abrie High School Musical partially got me into theatre
Across the Universe is a wonderful movie! Definitely deserved a spot on this list!
Redo this and put in the greatest showman, mama Mia and all the Pitch Perfects
Yes! I absolutely love Beauty and the Beast!! It’s one of my favorite Disney movies ever since I was a kid.
How is GREASE & FAME not in this list. Those are cultural iconic films. Les Miserables is a great Broadway play but did not nowhere the impact of those two
films. WOW!!!!
Yes!! Thank you for mentioning Across the Universe!! Such a brilliant movie 😍
Repo! The genetic Opera!!!!
jordynliketheriver What no.
Yes! I friggen love Repo! Although I actually prefer The Devil's Carnival and it's sequel a bit, just speaking personally, Repo's probably a bit more solid. And say it with me: Zydrate comes in a little glass vial!
A LITTLE GLASS VIAL!?
Phoenix Blackblood A LITTLE GLASS VIAL!
Raye J AND THE LITTLE GLASS VIAL GOES INTO THE GUN LIKE A BATTERY
I can’t believe they point out that “modern movie musicals have a tendency to attract big names in spades but limited singing range” and in the same list, praise Beauty and the Beast (Emma Watson, Emma Thompson) and Les Mis (Russell freakin Crowe). The hypocrisy. This might be the worst Watch Mojo list I’ve seen in awhile.
This list was too early. The greatest showman would easily make this list now
LOL this list is trash. The rent movie was a critical and public failure for a reason. 30 year olds singing about not wanting to pay their rent was laughable at the time. Beauty and the beast cast a lead that can’t sing.
Are you serious, Rent #2? And how can Dreamgirls just be an honorable mention, and did you forget Enchanted and Mamma Mia? This list is so wrong.
