The long rotor blade flexibility that this huge helicopter undergoes when it is picking up a heavy load, is quite extraordinary.
I'm always amazed by metal that is strong enough to hold massive weight, but flexible enough to bend that much, and then last for presumably many decades. Another incredible sight is watching A380's do hard landings and watching those giant wings flex up and down.

Got picked up in a UN operated one in East Timor in 1999/2000 operated by a Russian crew. This thing was fucking huge.
A great ride, the crew, I am sure, were all off their dials on vodka cos some of the things they did during the flight was very eye opening. To say the least.
But we got to our destination in one piece so the flight was a success. :-)

Awesome beast of a machine, has no equal. Nice video but for those who have never seen an Mi-26 in real life, videos do not really give you the sens of how massive these things are! One good place to see a few is the Oleg Antonov Aviation Museum in Kyiv in Ukraine. Excellent museum sitting on one side of Zhulyany Airport, so much other old Soviet aircraft etc, one of the best displays in the world. They have two Mi-26 on display, one in UN colours, also Mi 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 14 and the famous Mi-24 Hind.
Main rotor on R22 is only a few inches longer than the tail rotor of this beast.
To date this is the most powerful copter on the planet. The US also is leasing the services of these from Russia to retrieve their crippled equipment in Afghanistan. Yes people, America getting help from the Russians.
American Atlas V rockets are Russian built too.

Compensating for vast territory with a lot of untouched nature in between. Airlifting stuff is vital for supply of many remote places in Russia.
It was first designed (mi-6) for gas and oil industry and for planting huge electrical poles ( fermas) in one piece! There just no way you'll get the big stuff on the plant if needed without this type of tech with no roads!! Brilliant engineering!

LetsFlyThere Perhaps big Machine but certainly not better. How much fuel cost it take to fly this machines vs others? In war, the most important thing is not the gun but the supply of fuel and information.
Did some research on fuel consumption of this helicopter. Can only fly for 2 hours and consume 4000 Liter per house. Fuel tank max 11,900 liters.. No wonder no one use it as its drink fuel like a Russian drink Vodka!

Imagine a few of these being brought in to fight massive wildfires or lava flows?
THAT much down draft power pushing straight down and out in front of and to the sides of a beast this big?
Imagine how much water could be saved and how many structures could be saved if a few of these were stripped down to "flying gas cans" and hovered over a few particular "hot spots" for minutes at a time?
I think you are confusing things
1 the down draft don't do shit on lava flows cause the turbines will flame out from the hot ambient air over the lava
2 wild fires don't need wind, that would make it even worse... and again, the heat would flame out the turbines.
Thats a beutifull heli..biggest i bin in was in a super frelon while in the South African military..this one is a lil bigger deffo but the frelon not a small heli either lol..peace ✌

For some obscure reason, people seem to have a parkinson's disease attack when filming something interesting or exciting.....the take-off in this case...Next time put your cam on the ground, on your wallet works well most of time to give some angle or stabilise... You don't see a Halo every day.

Russia has many excellent interceptors, state of the art airborne and ground radars (some even better than US ones), and comparable missile technology, so advanced that US government is currently buying Russian made rocket engines. Just look at the military budget of both countries and you'll clearly see that Russians are far more efficient
