  • This Hornby / Meccano 1B1 (2-4-2) SNCF BB-8051 was in pretty rusted condition when it arrived. This two tone "motrice' had a DC motor and was produced from 1957 untill 1963. I bought this set from a friendly seller, from Milan, Italy who kindly informed me that the trainset belonged to his grandfather who was a captain on vessels during the late 1950's. The grandfather probably bought the train in Algeria (a French colony back in these days) on one of his travels and brought it back to Sorrento (Naples) Italy. There the train ran between 2 rooms of the house which must have been a lot of fun for the family. The trainset was later stored for nearly 25 years in a cellar and eventualy it wind up in Milan and than found its way up north to the Netherlands. It is amazing how some toys have traveled through history. The motor was completely stuck but made a snorring sound. Due to its beautifull history it deserved to run happily again and I promised the seller to inform him when it is running again. Now I can!
Thank you Alessandro for all the information. I hope to work on it further and restore the cab and replace all small parts. But currently it is freezing cold in my workshop... But there will be a follow up on it sometime soon!

Hi, Have one the same. Do you oil the armature bearing by putting machine oil (I use Inox MX3) in the central cotton filled tubes on each side? I presume it's designed for that...well I hope so as I oiled it there and all other necessary places and seems to be running fine.

Thanks for your comment and sorry for my late reply. I missed your comment until now. Actualy I use 10W40 car motoroil for all my trains (this 1957 engine is one of the most "modern" ones I have). I think back than there were less options than today and normal oil, sewing machine oil or handy oil was common to use for it.
The old maintenance leaflets also only mention "oil" without further explanation. It are all metal gears, no plastics etc. I got the idea for 10W40 from BenzTrainz on TH-cam and it works great for these older trains. I would not recommend it for modern trains ( like from the 80's to present).

Oh and yes, the cotton filled tube is indeed designed to put in some oil for lubrication. It was pretty standard for Hornby motors. I believe the plastic Lionel Scout motors had a similar cotton filled opening to lubricate.
