I think a lot of designers who are just starting out will go to their system fonts first, and try to identify a font that is similar to whatever cool designs they've been inspired by. It might be worth exploring which lower-quality fonts your students have gravitated towards, then offer your insight (as an experienced designer) as to why those elements have been better executed in higher-end fonts. Young designers need to learn how to curate-not just pull content from curated websites.

Agreed. That being said, there's system fonts that are worth a shot.

This video is all I needed to understand and help me to understand how the heck pick a font instead of scrolling for hours trying to do a good design. Thank u!! 💙

I think this video title is misleading. How to Know if a font is good or if it sucks? Go to the curated font resources. Hmmm seems like it's not helping why one font is good and why another is not. I was expecting that you would explain typography a little bit in-depth.

Agreed-so disappointing. How to choose a good font? Let someone else pick it for you!

Often what makes a 'good' font is NOT the typography, but the use it is put too.
Comic Sans and Papyrus (and for that matter Times New Roman) are perfectly good fonts, they've just been overused to such a degree they've become a joke.

I find the crack one looking good, otherwise Well then thats a v fine line right there separating good and bad color.,.... Maybe also the whole art is part subjective?

I think a good font conveys the emotions, attitude of the protagonist

    Awesome!
Now, fonts that you get 'free' with your computer or with your graphics program are not the same as fonts you get for free off the internet. Your computer vendor or software company has paid licensing fees to get the best fonts they can offer, and that fee was bundled into the price of the product. But like Google fonts, while good fonts that may be overused.
Papyrus is a fine novelty font, but it gets used so much the novelty has worn off.
Classic fonts are classics for a reason. See what the pros use, do what they do, or at least your version of what they do.
The font sellers show you the fonts they're trying to sell. It's like trying to select you dinner at the grocery store.
Thanks for recommending YouWorkForThem. That looks wonderful! Just the kind of thing I've been looking for.

I was hoping to get some hints on general good/bad practices in font design, essentially what to look for to avoid.
But this is mostly just "pick from quality sources" recommendation... Good for actual designers, but very far from fulfilling the video title "How To Know if a Font Is Good or if It Sucks?" 😕

absolutely 0 hate from my end but i literally didn’t learn anything from this video bro. Just cause there’s websites with very good fonts that cost money, doesn’t really teach me why a font was designed the way it was in the first place.

Your restaurant choosing process is absolutely elitist... most people just go in and look at the menu and try it if they think they like it... and if it is good they go back and take friends there.

So, you don't like your first student's choice of fonts? Well, let's see what you could do with the same graphic images? But no! You couldn't do that. Then you go off talking about food and restaurants - stopped watching after that... come on , man!

  • @BelieveInUrself93

Lol, a huge issue of mine has definitely been spending hours on dafont just to pick something mid. Meanwhile, you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on THOSE fonts, but you should spend the 5 to 10 or 15 dollars on the ones that will set your designs apart from everyone else's. myfonts is another good resource.
