Is Capitalism Anti-Black?

  • The U.S. is a capitalist society - but does it need to be? The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed inequalities in the system, with Black and brown populations in the country more vulnerable to both the health and economic fallout. For example, unemployment due to COVID hit Black Americans harder than white, and Black people are more likely to be hospitalized than their white counterparts.
    In this explainer, we look at the complicated relationship between capitalism, labor, exploitation and race - and whether the pandemic has inspired people to dream of a reality beyond capitalism.

      This channel should be deleted. Seriously, you idealize socialism? Capitalism is the reason computers were developed in America's private sector and not in the USSR. People were starting their own companies to provide new and innovative IT services so that they can get rich. If the motivation to start your own company was not there and you could become wealthy by just joining someone else's company, then why would people risk their money and valuable time to start new industries? That's why only the business owner should own the means of production (and not the workers).

    Unregulated capitalism is a threat to and exploitation of everyone. I think the systemic racism is a problem in this country in general and causes much of the economic inequality. The social democratic model of some European and Scandinavian countries is probably the best governing system and results in less income inequality and a better, healthier life for nearly all their citizens. Every quantifiable metric supports this conclusion.

    There is a Latin American scholar out there who’s also posited this, pointing to the origins of capitalism as being founded in the type of labor that was enforced upon Indigenous populations and later captive native Africans. These things began in 1492, and it’s not just North America, but the Americas that were born on this system. When there was no more need for wheelwrights in mass they lost their jobs and perhaps made rubber tires. In turn when they have to pay $15 for a burger flipper and burgers cost $16 dollars in part due to that change, it will drive customers
      to other meals to a degree. Machines will be used more often to keep prices down and to control the profit margins. Mom and pop restaurants have very small margins. As an ex low level manager in a grocery store and being involve in these inside decisions we just loathed to take these types of actions. In a small community even McDonalds was hurt by the negative press. We sought to work a justification for keeping all that we could. Big business I agree are more apt to pursue such measures because if their sheer economic power and relationships with government. Corporations for example are railed about by us and politicians but the fact is they are tax collectors for the federal government and they contribute so much to the campaigns of even people like Bernie and AOC. Actually more on balance then republicans which was a shocker when I looked at the real numbers. So I don’t have to tell you that you are correct that companies are ever in pursuit of less costly innovations and machines where possible to make themselves more competitive and economically viable, but mostly it is "not" to say how can we screw the workers today and most likely even you or I would consider the bottom line or our average investor and business would suffer. Another huge factor in the racial wealth disparity in the United States is the legacy of homesteading, specifically the Oregon Land Donation Act, of which a significant portion of the population are benefactors

    • @aaron___6014
      @aaron___6014 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The act from 1850 that allowed certain white and mixed blood Indians, and certain existing settlers land to help establish Oregon as a productive state? The same act that required these people to stay on the land (not sell it) and cultivate it for 4 years?
      You do realize that means they had to prep the land for farming, right?
      And how does this still impact racial welath disparity almost 200 years later? Are blacks and Indians wanting to start farms? Do you realize it's an extremely unprofitable way to make a living but that there are lots of free handouts?
      What about this Act of 1850 limits blacks today?

    • @aaron___6014
      @aaron___6014 ปีที่แล้ว

      You also realize that the majority of homesteaded properties across the United States have been sold because it is no longer profitable to be a small farm.
      How do you not know this?

    • @aaron___6014
      @aaron___6014 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any race can own land and a home in Oregon and claim a homestead exemption. But it is a limited amount of land and a dollar figure, not the 160-640 acres allowed by the 1850 Act.

    Smart people saying silly things. If you drive 100% of all white people out of the country it would still be a wonderful thing for 40.2 million people to deal freely with one another and prosper together according to their talents and services to their customers. Capitalism is as we speak lifting Africa out of poverty. The key word in any country engaging in capitalism is GO engage. However let’s never confuse “crony” capitalism with “free market” capitalism.

    This video is just fantastic. To pack so much economic ignorance into a 10 minute video is pure talent....
    Capitalism is the free market economic system based on the work ethic, private ownership, innovation and entrepreneurship. The investment of capital, and production, distribution, income, and prices are determined not by government (as in socialism) but through the operation of a competitive market where decisions are voluntary and private rather than regulated and mandated by government (see, e.g., the law of supply and demand).

      (Worker co-ops)

    The racial issue has its specifc features but after liberal anti-discrimination laws have showed they cannot fix the problem anymore that means that mostly economic redistribution is needed to help the black population in the US. The problem there of course being that the Democratic Party is commited to liberalism and so it cannot enact the redistributive measures needed such as medicare for all (something all the rest of the developed world has), free college, ending colege debt, massive infraestructure and community build up to create jobs and of course to finance that requires ending the military industrial complex. The two parties in the US agree againts those measures and so the measures needed now for the improvement of the quality of life of blacks and the rest of the working population are beyond the current bipartisan monopoly of politics in the US

    We havent had capitalism in a long time, this is a corporatist economy.. Corporatism basically holds the ankles of the poor and shakes them for all their worth and given the structure of our society outside the economy, this does affect POC at a lot larger percentage. We shouldnt be arguing that all races should be shit on in the same manner, we should be arguing for no shit on any race.. Careful not to leave allies out of the fight by denying the problem is only race deep..

Now I completely understand the history that capitalism has in America and how it works better for white people then people of color, with that being said I do believe that capitalism can work for everyone because it originated from working class people who were not sufficient with feudalism.
