The guitar world just lost a "powerful" man in Roland. The song "Power" off Earth,Wind& Fire 's first Columbia album is a classic tribute to Roland Bautista's legacy. He also did stints with George Duke, Raul DeSouza, and the Crusaders that were phenomenal. RIP Roland.
I saw this show in 1981 with my parents. I was about 3 years old, but I remember all of it. The DVD is a edited version. Roland was a superb musician and his solo's were great. Thanks and Rest In Peace Roland.
Thanks for the video! We saw Roland with EWF (my wife Christina Flores Navarro, cousin to Roland) at the Fabulous Forum in about 1981 or 82, don't remember the exact year and we were always proud to mention the fact that her cousin was a world class guitar player.
Roland's style of play was great for EWF. I loved how he could switch from funky rhythm licks to sizzlin' hot rock leads. I never had the opportunity to see him perform live. However, I am grateful for the TH-cam postings of him. I most certainly missed him being in the band following its 4-year hiatus. Furthermore, I would also like to thank Roland's family for sharing him with the music world. May GOD bless you. RIP Roland.
I'm crossing my fingers for this dynamic performance of Mr.Roland Bautista to be included on a future reissue of the Earth,Wind & Fire Oakland 1981 Dvd!I hope Roland's niece is reading this!
@Babiilo09 God bless you and your family so sorry for your loss, he was legendary to me and my family. Thank you for posting this incredible footage that should have been on the dvd. I'd love to have a copy of all the footage that was cut from this concert.
The EWF Raise Tour bring back so many memories@LA Coliseum! The DVD cut out a lot of footage. That concert was almost 3 hours long. When Earth, Wind & Fire perform, They Performed!!! I remember this Roland Bautista moment. Rest Maurice & Bautista. Thanks for posting.
I saw Roland perform with EWF in 1981 when Raise was released. He was magnificent and Changin Times has been one of my most favorite tracks. I saw this performance live and all I could call it was syncopated frenzy!!! I read only good things about him and was saddened to hear of his passing in 2012. My thoughts are with you again after the passing of Maurice White. Thank you for posting this rare performance and may the Yah be with you.
Very sad to read this.... I'm having an EWF night whilst I work (graphic design) and this came as a shock. I had just included Roland in a comment on another EWF post on the tube. All my best wishes from England. This is a very nice tribute video :)
Awesome upload...Sorry to hear your uncle passed. Was a huge EWF fan and remember the concerts with your uncle. He truly the best guitarist they ever had...Very underated...Load some more...Just isn't enough material on the web
This is a rare gem, been looking for this for a long time. I know that EWF couldn't do the special visual at the Paris concert in 1982 because of a bad venue, but there was 18000 people there and nobody in the press talked about it, a few journalists were there and got totally shocked by the energy and quality of the show and the lack of coverage, they got inspired and started a french tv show called 'sex machine' about FUNK, and showed for the first time MJ's Billy Jean to a french audience.
I was thinking of this song and found this page. First, I'm sorry to hear of the passing of Roland. From '76/'77, if I saw EWF in the record store, I'd buy it...period. I think it was Raise or Powerlight and I read the credits and saw Al McKay missing and this "new guy" Roland Batista. I heard that guitar and was hooked. For those who never saw these guys live in the '70s, each band member had a solo. Larry Dunn was one of my favorites. That year, I wanted to see what Roland was going to do. He did not disappoint!!
Many thanks for post yhis gem!! From years i search for it, and for the rest of the concert not included on dvd or concerts from 1982-83, you´ll post the rest in the future? I know they played evolution orange, faces... I have the Roland lp solos, and one track particularly i play on my turntable again and again and again, Vida, uaooo. One track with Roland also i love so so so so much is destiny from the jacksons...Superb mu sician
Are you related to senior Roland Bautista? Please accept my respects! Roland Bautista is a great musician, I really miss him. But his wonderful music will be with me for the rest of my life.
Yeah this was from the HBO concert but they edited his solo out cuz it was "too long" or atleast thats what he said lol. Gna miss my crazy uncle! I made him a fan page on facebook where i will be posting more stuff that i find such as slide shows, pictures, and songs. R.I.P uncle roland -3
I saw the TH-cam video of his 60th birthday party. That was heartbreaking to me knowing he died shortly afterwards. Sorry for your loss. R.I.P. MR. Bad ass Roland the King Bautista. And you are a very Beautiful woman. Wish you well. And another thing. He should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with EWF. That was wrong in my opinion.
Thanks for verifying that, sis. I thought the outfits and set looked too similar to the H.B.O. concert, (thought I was going crazy, or something.) Yep. Because of its length, I can see why it would be left on the cutting-floor. But, usually all the REALLY great stuff usually does. What an incredible solo! Indeed, Roland had some chops!
Dear Ms. Loretta, I would like to follow your Facebook page. I want to see a photo of signor Ronald. I'm a fan of your uncle from Latvia (Europe). Sorry for the bad English translation. My regards. Did your uncle have his own family, children?
Yeah, he was the first in the new unit. Michael Beal was the first guitarist. He left for some reason I don't know 'cause Ralph said when he first auditioned it was with Verdine over Beal's house.
My gosh....Roland could really shred! Is Roland in the Earth, Wind, and Fire music video for "Let's Groove" ? It's kinda hard to tell when watching it.
I guess to fit the Laserdisc 60 minutes limit on one side but then I doubt that was the case. But then again it wouldn't make sense to release a short side B with only 11 minutes video. I think it had to do with technical issues with recording equipment might lead the quality deemed not good enough for home media release. And this being concert video it's a one off mean there's no other way to re-record it.
@BabiiLo09 : Your uncle seemed to be a calm guy and seemed willing to conceal his private life after his 1970s/1980s was over...That's the impression that I get of him anyways...Hardly could find any information or pictures about him...While when I searched pictures and informations about Philip Bailey or other members of the group, I found plenty; at once ! It seems none of the groups' members payed a tribute to him, while he had been 4 years with the group; a regular member... it's a shame !
Damn, this guy could shred like there ain't no tomorrow. After listening to Last Days and Time along without 3 1980s albums he did when he came back, Roland was a killer guitarist and the best one EWF ever had, bar none. The only other guitarists that were great like he was were Johnny Graham and Sheldon Reynolds.
R.I.P., brother Roland. Serious?! What a spectacular performance! Roland has always been such an underrated guitarist, and his talent far exceed many that are often deemed as a great 'guitar god'. I'm always excited to see footage that features the more obscure members-- including improvised solos-- esp. those of the individual 'Phenix Horn' members. That said, I personally would've titled this video: 'Earth, Wind and Fire, ( featuring, Roland Bautista.). Above all, thanks for this rare footage. Where did you get this! If you have more, can you PLEASE post? Peace...
I really hate it when ppl perpetrate. Maurice White was the lead singer and he was the one who gave EWF their rise to fame. They have this Bautista guy down as lead singer on at least one resource. He was a guitarist not lead singer. Give Maurice his props.
The title says “Roland Bautista”because his niece uploaded the video, it’s understandable why she put it (they are family) although it’s also assumed that the leader was always Maurice obviously.✌🏼
Awesome!!! How did you get this!!! This is from the 1981 EWF Live concert in Oakland...I knew there was more than what was published on the VHS/DVD Amazing...I wish the whole damn concert was released, i had no idea Roland had such a big role...this track isnt even included!
Hi Loretta!! The facebook page says that is no available, What a great upload, he is the best if course from all EW&F history. (Sorry if my english is not so clear)
RIP Roland.
nice video Roland was great, looks a tour rehearsal very rare, and great. I'll pray for Roland I've heard he was a great character, thank you.
Roland Bautista was by far the best guitar teacher I have ever had! RIP Roland, we miss you dearly.
I saw this show in 1981 with my parents. I was about 3 years old, but I remember all of it. The DVD is a edited version. Roland was a superb musician and his solo's were great. Thanks and Rest In Peace Roland.

Gonna miss Roland's great guitar playing. He rocked it out on that performance with EWF!! Rest In Peace.
How nice that you knew Signor Roland Bautista personally. I'm very happy for you.
Awesome! I was there to see your Uncle. I saw them New Years Eve at the Oakland Arena. RIP! and thank you!
Before AL McKay. ....Roland held it down, R.I.P BRO. !!!

The guy was a beast! I like his work on I've Had Enough on the HBO concert.
RIP RB
The greatest guitarist The Fire ever had, to see him live was spectacular, you will be sadly missed Roland
I just love his work with Ronnie Laws, very distinctive style. Love is Here... sublime!
Bautista kicks ass! I been a fan for years...I still do one of his song....Vida. tienes otra vidaR.I.P brother

The most underrated video on TH-cam. !!!

Roland was their original guitarist and left in 1973. He returned in 1981 after Al McKay left.
Pleasant memories! RIP Roland.
The late Roland Bautista a monster in this live in concert video (I luv it)

I like his guitar because he has stratocaster body, HSH pickups and telecaster neck.
I wish I could see the whole ...without the overdubs that is on the HBO version...
i never saw without using them except a few songs. And I saw then many times,
That particular edit was indeed a crime! I'd love for H.B.O. to release an unedited version of this classic performance.
MAN, he was BAD!!!!
WOW Roland woo ❤️

Where was this performed? Is this from the 1981 Oakland concert that was shown on HBO?I hope one day we can see more clips!
Y wasn't this included in the in concert Dvd in 1981?

What a legend! I've heard him for years on Tom Waits' songs but until I looked around more I find him here. R.I.P.
Do you have the rest of this show. The song they were going into was another unposted performance from that show.

Why did they cut Changing Times from the DVD?
Sky Blue I saw one comment where they said the concert lasted for almost three hours
I'm not finding anything interesting about his playing. It doesn't have much depth. Lacks taste.
