How could an album be this perfect? The combination of Burt and Elvis is sublime - every track exquisite. If I have to choose a particular song it would be this "My Thief" .... heart wrenching.
This album, Painted from Memory, is one of my deserted island albums. R.I.P. to the great Burt Bacharach who died today. He influenced many record producers and musicians of the generation following his. Thankfully, his music lives on.
Whenever I have to give someone important a birthday present, this cd is my gift. I even gave it to my own 'thief'.... If ever I have to choose 1 cd as the only one I can listen to for the rest of my life, this is it...
Some 40 years into my life, having had two ex-wives and what felt like a thousand girlfriends (all who were far too lovely for this ugly face), I finally met the woman who was my everything, the only true love I've ever known on this Earth. I've wrecked and sabotaged so many relationships, but for once I gave my heart and soul so completely and without abandon...something that has made it so much more difficult and painful to accept that I lost her. Three years have passed now and there still isn't a day that my heart doesn't ache with emptiness and a morning that I don't wake up whispering 'Te amo' into the empty pillow next to me, a message that I know will never make it to her ears. All I have now are my dreams when I am back on the beautiful streets of Guanajuato with my arm around her waist, happy in a way that I know I will never feel again. I truly appreciate this song...it's nice to know someone else understands how it feels.
I adore this entire album. I would listen to it more often, but it brings me to tears too easily, so I savor each time I listen to these wonderful songs.
This beautiful song from the brilliant album, "Painted From Memory" is heart wrenching and unforgettable! Burt Bacharach is a genius!! HIs passion for creating beautiful and memorable music throughout the years is unmatched. Elvis Costello is a singer whose talent is highly underrated!! His voice and interpretation of this heart wrenching song, as well as the other songs on this brilliant CD is flawlessly executed, and transports the listener to incredible depths of emotions!!! The piano and violin accompaniment add to the depths of this gorgeous song, and are simply beautiful!!!!
Captivating...after all these years...a classic album made even better with the re release in double disc form...lets hope the concert will be released in dvd/bluray formats...Bacharach and Costello complementing one another....so sad that the legend that is Bacharach has passed away....buy..listen... be captivated...Burt Bacharachs music will live forever.
Loved her version. It's a tremendous song that if sung from the heart is going to sound wonderful. Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello collaborated on this. It's at or near the top of my all-time favorite compositions.
This album is incredible. I was 22 when it came out. At the time listening to punk & hardcore, stumbled upon this album and was blown away. I’m 45 now and it’s still my favorite Elvis record. I went to a Burt Bacharach concert and dragged my then goth girlfriend with me. 😂
GRACIAS.
Elvis Costello has found his niche: it is in working with other gifted composers and musicians to create music SUBLIME. He is amazing here with Bacharach, also his voice combined with Paul McCartney's was so naturally similar in tone and character to Lennon/McCartney harmony (although I am happy the two worked together on the one album together and put this aside for now-they are both too good to limit themselves or try to conform to a certain musical formula.) Still, this delightful combination of talent can always be combined at will in the future...
"I didn't lead you on, But there will always be A little larceny in everyone So hush and don't you cry I'm trying to be kind Because I have a perfect alibi"
While I didn't have the connections to get into this, I was lucky for the instore performance at Virgin Megastore Union Square, cd signing at Tower Records Lincoln Center, and the live show at Radio City Music Hall. All special for a special record ('close the door, dim the lights, blow out the candles...').
Thank you for pointing this out. I always felt it but didn't think about what was actually going on with that one extra beat in the 2nd bar of the verse. Remarkable compositional touch, the kind of intuitive thing Bacharach has done in many of his works over the years.
I'm crying because I am that man, I've been that haunted fool for most of my adult life and now, in the autumn, its seems I am destined to die that man. Could i survive one more love affair? Do I dare? It would be good to feel love and maybe I wouldn't lose love again. God, please give me the strength.
***** your whole thought process is a brain fart. You know I'm correct that Elvis isn't a very good singer; and I mean this objectively. I think he is a fantastic songwriter and musician in general.

I agree Tony. It's truly perfection!
Me too
I agree, such a perfect album!! Yes, "My Thief" is very heart wrenching!!

I have to agree with you!! Fantastic CD!!

I love watching Burt playing piano + conducting orchestra . Alot of moving parts ! Good job Burt & Elvis
I can’t believe it took me 23 years to find this perfect album. Worth the wait. It’s stunning.
I am so blown away by this whole CD. I have run out of words to express it. Just listen and experience this magic for yourself.
Indeed! Exceptional taste and GREAT advice!
I'm sorry. As a child of my parent's messy divorce the magic of this cd is as much my nightmares...
Masterpiece
It hurts how good this album is. I can't think of anything musically that cuts so deeply.
I adore this entire album. I would listen to it more often, but it brings me to tears too easily, so I savor each time I listen to these wonderful songs.
JazzyHorn Same. Reminds me of ex and the divorce and the tears start flowing
It’s good for me though. Real catharsis n such
between the song and the lovely violinist closing her eyes to feel the music she's playing, gets me every time...

Want to cry now I just descovered this tonight. Wellcome 2020
I've shed gallons of tears over the decades I've listened to this. Every time is another punch in the heart.
For some, this will be the greatest love song OF ALL TIME...I won't argue.
I own a LOT of music and I think I have good taste but this album is another level
Which other albums would you say are on "another level"?
Absolutely! I saw them in Phoenix and they did not disappoint!
well said!
I agree, what a stunning album, I spe nd many moments, with a joint, listening to this Album, peace n love 🙃😜❤️
@@vernonprescott2855 I stopped smoking 20 + years ago but I make chocs out of it, it’s a better buz and doesn’t wreck your lungs. Take care bud😎

Breathtakingly poignant in its subtlety of emotion expressed through a brilliant melody and lyric.
This performance is amazing--Costello singing and Lisa Taylor answering back in the end, as if whispering in his ear. Bravo!
If this song is ever playing and I'm not crying it's because I'm dead.
One of my all time favorite albums. Desert island music.
fantastic.....every song is really top notch.
I’m privileged to have seen Burt and Elvis live on their brief Painted From Memory tour.
Elvis Costello tiene un timbre de voz unico... excelente
i want to thank you for sharing this healing song for me i cry for tge first time with lyrics and tune.
This is one of my favorite songs by him
not "him",,,, them.
Oh my God, how good is this. Beautiful Beautiful 5 minutes, absolute bliss!
A master work.
Absolutely beautiful...the genius of Burt Bacharach, and Elvis is so good on these songs.
been a great fan of this album for ever
A Masterpiece!
I know it's over.....
Massive respect to Elvis who steps away, from spotlight (literally @ 4:15) to give Lisa her time.
magnificent!!!!

OMG. Just beautiful.
Wow! Mr. Costello is a really good crooner! It’s like a night club scene in an old black and white movie. Well done!
His dad Ross McManus was a big band crooner :)
nem sei definir a beleza dessa musica, amo demais, Liza Taylor maravilhosa...
awesome!!! I cry...amazing album and collaboration. I would love to be able to work it Burt...and talk and collaborate with Elvis
GRACIAS.
One of my most loved albums
I love this song. Gets me.
I’ve needed this quite a bit recently, ty❣️
Beautiful.
A very haunting song.....!!
How sweet is that solo vocal at the end---Lisa Taylor
You are so right.
Incredible
MUSICALLY TALENTED🥳🥳
AMAZING SINGER👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Hai rgagione, un vero capolavoro, come tutto il disco "Painted From Memory". Grazie per averlo pubblicato!
Un capolavoro che non ha bisogno di essere tradotto , grandi
The violinist at the 1:43 mark is stunning!!
wowwww incredible.. the final is magic.

"I didn't lead you on,
But there will always be
A little larceny in everyone
So hush and don't you cry
I'm trying to be kind
Because I have a perfect alibi"
right
One of the best lines ever written
Thanks Keith,I hadn't caught that lyric, beautiful for sure
Amazing
That is the most wonderful way to tell someone that you are not in love.
This is the best it can possibly be.
While I didn't have the connections to get into this, I was lucky for the instore performance at Virgin Megastore Union Square, cd signing at Tower Records Lincoln Center, and the live show at Radio City Music Hall. Amazing heart breaking
R.I.P Burt ... Great artist...
Wonderful
I can listen to 3:33 to the end all day long. Lisa Taylor!
Bravo sweet memories
Beautiful
That 5/4 bar right after the 1st 4/4 bar of the verse....just sounds so natural..Bacharach HAD to have added this!??
Woowww just discovered!
Thank you for pointing this out. I always felt it but didn't think about what was actually going on with that one extra beat in the 2nd bar of the verse. Remarkable compositional touch, the kind of intuitive thing Bacharach has done in many of his works over the years.
Like previous comments I like most music but, this album is simply stunning
Angie, please forgive me. Life is grey without you. I'm doing better now, have a job and a better life. I miss you
If you don't cry you are a chicken. This is a milestone
The Dark Side of Love. I have to take just a small sliver of it or I'll live that smokey, heavy side.
Sublime ❤
This song... is just terribly brilliant. It's murder.
This is from the Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach Painted from Memory album. correct?
Yes, a great album!!!
I'm crying because I am that man, I've been that haunted fool for most of my adult life and now, in the autumn, its seems I am destined to die that man. Could i survive one more love affair? Wow!
4:46, A Piano Pedal Release, with a soft boom ending the sustaining last note.
these two should get together again and write some songs for Mad Men
No DVD or Blu-ray available !!!!!!!
0:28, Music begins, with orchestra, and ends with Piano Sustains until “Pedal Boom” at 4:46.
perfect ending...
Like Mozart and Shakepeare getting together to write a few tunes
è così bello da far male.
If you're already depressed over a failed love, don't listen to this album. Though beautiful, it's just sad.
Humbling sublime 🙃😜
One of the best ballads of all time. But just one thing: there are two piano players...
hermoso....
joli!!!
My thief whose love haunts my dreams; JLT.
Weeping....Weeping for a the mistakes I've made!
I'm with you Catherine!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Take my heart, it's broken and of no use to me.
Lisa sounds like the late Syreeta Wright, Stevie Wonder's first wife.
What CD does this song belong to?
Painted From Memory
By Elvis & Burt collaboration album
1998
wow ------- 3:33 melted
Absolutely THE saddest love song EVER written!!!
The story of my life wreck
james lynch So sorry to hear. May you be granted restoration in all ways possible. Blessings from Sweden.
Very dark.
can we get another singer?
are you kidding?
nope
***** *Ballard*? LOL. Obviously you don' know what a singer is. Elvis is a great songwriter. Full stop!
***** your whole thought process is a brain fart. You know I'm correct that Elvis isn't a very good singer; and I mean this objectively. I think he is a fantastic songwriter and musician in general.
Are you a total moron? Costello's voice ain't the greatest but it works brilliantly with these songs by Burt Bacharach.
Lucciconi....
I don't think Elvis' voice is up to the demands of Burt's music. Sorry.
Lots of passion. But he really can't sing in tune....not at all.
Descanse en paz maestro Bacharach
