No idea if you'll see this but a bit of balled up aluminum foil and some water does a great job removing rust and tarnish on chromed parts, done this on a lot of bicycle rims and other parts to great success
Right after watching this I went to Goodwill and snagged a $20US BMX and harvested the bars. Put them on my GT Backwoods and dropped-in a $25US shifter cable kit and replaced the break cabling with spares from my "stuff"... bike is like a new ride! The BMX bars really make this bike awesome! Going to spring for a new set of tires. Clicking the Subscribe button right now!
Follow-up... That BMX "Spinner" got a full service. Cleaned and lubed everything that moves. Frame is in remarkable condition for a "yard bike". Has a beater handlebar, far to small on it right now but until I find a kid walking while their friends are riding, it lives indoors now.
This has turned out to be some kind of comfort video / background noise for me while I work on my own clunkers. I just picked up a ‘92 GT Tequesta in black with white splatter paint. It’s currently all taken apart and I’m spot painting the scratched decals with model paint. Thanks for the inspiration and for the great video 🚲
I remember in the early 90s, my sister had a mountain bike with that same paint scheme as the fork except in black and white rather than black and purple. Seeing that paint scheme brought back core memories lol
That bike is mega rad! Turned out great. Inexpensive but functional parts, slightly off color scheme between frame and fork but doesn't hurt the eyes. Super trusty 7speed shifting. If should name one thing I personally would change: the box into a basket, but that is personal preference. And BTW: love your video editing and commenting: no useless turns and loops and talking to make the video longe as it has to be. Time flew by, while watching. Thanks! Keep up your fun. Greetings from Germany
I did a similar built on a similar bike from the same era - a nice yellow Rebound. It has the same canti brake cable routing as this one. I tried your approach with the cable inner, but I didn't like the brake feel on the rear. Instead I used a band-on cable stop on the top tube. That allowed a more conventional set up for the v-brake cabling. The brakes are great. Great build and the lambda pedals are a great choice.
Thank you! That’s definitely a good option. The rear brake doesn’t feel bad on this set up, so I’m going to run it as-is for a while.. might try find special ferrule or modify something to have a nicer fit
One of the best bike build video's I've watched. Very interesting and the bike turned out fantastic. I truly enjoyed that. Love seeing 80's & 90's bikes living on.
Great video! My first project bike was a GT Karakoram a couple years older than your bike. Totally used up. I rode it and fixed it for about 10 years. It taught me about half of what I know. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Maaaaan! I'm just here looking at build inspo for when I move back to NZ from Sweden and you're out here ripping up North Head. I grew up on that street! Mad.
Fantastic video! I just acquired one of these old GT's. In the budget vein, have you considered doing a video on tools? What "bicycle specific" tools would you consider essential for doing a build like this? Many of us have basic mechanic tools but lack the bike tools to make one of these projects really go well.
to make the cable straight at 24:5 you could use a hair dryer on heat setting or a heat gun on it for a few seconds and move it into place and hold it, it stays pretty well
I have a GT with that frame style I found in the garbage. Think it may be older because it doesn't have front shocks. I kept in my shed because the frame reminds me little of the SE quadangle. Its not in to bad of shape but does need a lot of new parts.
Great video & great build mate! I’ve got a similar year GT timberline I’m planning to restore here in Aus. Love that you tried to restore as much as possible and kept the costs down 👌🏻
20:56 "I know zipties are'nt the strongest solution" I beg to differ greatly! First of all, the ties would cut into the plastic easily under load and stress. So what would break first is the box. Secondly I had a front-rack break at all three contact points to the fork within a week or so on a big tour. I fixed one failure after the other with zipties and rode another 1500k over the spikiest and cobbliest roads of spain and morroco with close to 10kg on the rack at all times with no issues. So as far as i am concerned zipties are way stronger than any iron, aluminium or cheap steel parts!
Nice build! I just installed a basket on the back of my BMX and it looks goofy but it's so useful. I don't do tricks, I just like BMX bikes. Just needs better brakes and a lighter gear ratio. 25/9 in a town that's 80% hills is a bit rough. XD
dont know about evaporust, but the rust converter i used in my car works wonders, i hac it in my driveway while i swaped the engine with a spot reconverted with rust converter and it held strong until i did the body work and painted it
This build is super cool and that on a very nice budget! Of course, in a perfect world you would get a different fork or paint this one and also im not a fan of the basket but it works and thats amazing!
A sharpie does good to cover up dings and dents in black paint like the seatpost and stem. :) Also, I suggest that you rill holes in corners for dust and drainage in the plastic rack.
I have the bike that this fork belongs to. Its a 93 GT karakoram. Came with full deore LX drivetrain and brakes. Im working on a similar type of build for it right now!
Here is something I have started believing in : Shallow basket for washing, deep basket for usage in storing or carrying. That basket is pretty but deeper would have been better.
It shouldn’t take much equipment or practice if you’re just doing braze-ons. Nothing like if you’re building an entire frame. If you’re interested in trying, go for it!
I'm thinking of putting a 2.4 tire on my GT pantera but I'm not quite sure about the clearance i hope the thread pattern of Ardent and Holy roller is the same, nice build always 🔥🔥🔥
Excelente armado como siempre 👌🏽 Te quedó genial esa 26🔥🔥 Ojalá puedas encontrar una en rod 700 pero de ese estilo a ver si te animas a hacer un proyecto así 😉
Thankyou thankyou! 700c on a 26” frame? That has definitely crossed my mind before but have yet to try it.. would need to find a nice Large or XL frame
This just came up on my suggested feed. I've already had a love for bikes like this in my heart but have forgotten about it until I seen this video. I had old Diamond Back Accent from the 90s that I never got the chance of building because the seat post was welded to the frame with rust. HOWEVER! Immediately after seeing this video I went on FB Marketplace and snagged the same bike different color and I'm planning on building a similar build to your GT. Thanks for inspiring me! Also where can I get the same basket from?
hey man good job on the build! so nice, may I ask what is the size of the handlebar and where did you get it? thanks in advance, keep up the good work!
Possible solution to the frame cable guides issue: a shifter adjuster to catch the cable end, if still too large, sand out its treads until it does. The saddle, i would try to fill the whole with black matt silicone.
I’m doing a similar setup to my GT outpost trail. Are those the original rims! My tires are 26x1.95 and I just replaced them with the proper size but I like the look of the bigger tires. Also how does it ride compared to 1.95” tires? Thanks.
@@waveywheelies oddly enough when you posted the video I was thinking "I really hope waveywheelies posts a video today of a bike build". What i love to see a Vintage GT mountain bike getting some love I myself have a 1997 GT Arrowhead that is in need of some love very nice work indeed.
I love these GT resto videos. I raced GT BMX in the 80s and had both an Arrowhead and eventually a Zasker LE when mtb things got serious. Great video.
I love that you rip your bikes in the end. Wicked skills as always
Cheers!
Totally rad!
No idea if you'll see this but a bit of balled up aluminum foil and some water does a great job removing rust and tarnish on chromed parts, done this on a lot of bicycle rims and other parts to great success
Needed this tip, thanks!
Have you tried wd40 instead of water?
@@arksrandom5968wd40 is better
Use hot salt water for a stronger effect. I know it from how to clean silverware in the kitchen.
Havent watched the vid but hey, its wavey wheelies, its always a banger build
Thankyou❤️
Holy sh*. Did not expect you to do that kind of riding on it at the end. wow

Loved whatever track you were using at the 20/21 minute mark!
Tbf, and the one at 22 minutes, so chilled
cant believe they still make holy rollers, i used to run those on my bmx like 20 years ago

Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the vid :) I agree about the fork colour, just couldn’t convince myself to repaint it haha. Maybe in the future ✌️
Such a fun video. These old bikes are so fun to work on. Too bad it didn’t have a quill stem to check every vintage box. Great build and video.

Damn, this one came off really clean dude! Nothing fancy, just made for ripping, as it should. Love your vids, keep em coming!

Steel wool is the best rust remover on chrome.
Crispy build, as always!
Thank you :)
Amaaazing work and video. Love your videos man, keep up the good work!
Really appreciate that man, means a lot! Thanks for the support🙏
Tastefull build and well honed riding skills, congrats on the right orientation of Holy rollers as well
Cheers🙏
You can use steel wool and degreaser on the chrome!
Nice work guy ! The assembly is a good mix of original parts + somes new consumables.
Pierre from France ;)
Rack angle looks good in the final pic! Love that it follows the top tube

good music choice man. love the vid !
cheers man!
Beautiful build, learned a lot too ! Great video thanks 👍
Love that tip for putting the bike on the floor when you've got a stubborn bottom bracket 🔥
Hi from Hamilton. Great video and channel!
I loved doing these types of builds also in my time in shops.
I love this build. Would really want exactly the same for a daily.
Nicely done. Really like the tires.
Cheap flush cutters ($39 CAD for a 10-pak) really cuts down on Ty-Rap lacerations.

Love this retro bike...

Your commuting looks a lot more fun than mine ;)
Hey man I really love your vids!! I wish I had one of the fixed gear you have specially the Cinelli
If you could find in-line barrel adjuster for 5mm brake housing that might work inplace of the cable stop.
Use A GT Sticker To Hold That Cable Into Place. The Bike Turned Out Great.
The pedals are rad.
Awesome build as usual ! Does the 8 speed shifter works good with the 7 speed derailleur ? The pull ratio is slightly different.
Thanks! Yep works a treat. When I did some quick research it seemed a lot of people had done the same without issue
Here is something I have started believing in : Shallow basket for washing, deep basket for usage in storing or carrying. That basket is pretty but deeper would have been better.
16:43 What brand chainring did you use? Is it a narrow wide?
Great build! Time to learn how to braze your own cable stops? I think you can use MAPP gas with silver. Might be worth looking into.
Thanks! Yeah that’s a great idea.. would love to learn, just need the gear and the knowledge!
It shouldn’t take much equipment or practice if you’re just doing braze-ons. Nothing like if you’re building an entire frame. If you’re interested in trying, go for it!
idk why this was on my recommended but I'm not complaining

hey man good job on the build! so nice, may I ask what is the size of the handlebar and where did you get it? thanks in advance, keep up the good work!
Thanks! I’ll have to measure them for ya. I got them second hand from a friend :)
Sick videos man. Got me wanting a retro gt now. You ever thought of doing a full sus build?
Finally something other than fixed gear
Possible solution to the frame cable guides issue: a shifter adjuster to catch the cable end, if still too large, sand out its treads until it does.

Great video. Where can I buy the lubericant bottle with the super thin tip ?
Very nice build ,i want to ask ,what size handlebar is
absolute great work
superb video, brilliant build, kudos mate. Subbed.
Thanks a lot man! The support means a lot🙏
That looks like a fun lil ripper.
It sure is :)
Could you list the essential tools you would need for a single speed conversion
The bars lets the build down. A crumbworks mothbar will make that look gorgeous.
I wonder if those tires are available over here
That's an awesome ricochet.
nice build but even nicer riding skills
oh, and i heard that the rust that can appear in chromed parts goes awai with aluminum foil, scrubing over it, it may help you some day in some bikes
Nice commuter build!
Thankyou!

what cleaning products did you use for this bike?
its been a while Wavey! glad you're back bro!

All you need is a dummy ET in the basket and you may take off!
That was fun. Thank you.
Amazing build! Good job!
Thank you :)
Lucky you got the frame so cheap. these now go for crazy prices here. 300-400£

yyo what a great channel man, no bulshit
keep it up!
Thanks a lot man! 🙏
What front rack is that ? New Or and available or something laying around .
am i seeing this correctly?…how are you able to pedal and engage the hub backwards?…and at the same time it coasts too…
