Holy moly! That Mega Drive port looks fantastic! The use of colors is masterful and the gameplay looks intact. Even the music is good and the voices crisp and clear. WTF.

What more can you ask for from the Mega Drive port? Hardly anything... there are no compromises. Wow. I'm sure the finished one will be amazing. Still, you have to give the Master System some props for doing a good 8-bit version with 2 Mbit. The PC-Engine one doesn't impress me. While the graphics aren't bad, it leaves out mission 2, the bonus stage, and your melee attacks (and with that, bye bye 20.000 Special bonus).
it still bewilders me that Sega never released a official arcade port of Shinobi on the MD/Genesis would have flown of the shelves oh what could have been, I still think the SMS was the best home port for me anyway.
This game was the reason for me getting a megadrive and sega never released it or shadow dancer the arcade version it took nearly 15 years before I had a pc able to play this on mame and on my phone it looks amazing
I never knew there was a fan port of Shinobi. I was quite confused as to how you would play Shinobi on the Mega Drive and not the Arcade version until now. Im quite impressed with how many Sega arcade games getting the ports to the Genesis/Mega Drive FINALLY. I outta try this one out! Also the Mega Drive version definitely wins, but the Master System version aint half bad by any means.
That's okay, we got two great Shinobi sequels (and a cool version of Shadow Dancer), and I don't think Sega would have put out a port of the original with this kind of quality and attention. Looks like it might have been worth the wait :)
Shinobi on the Master System gave you a life bar instead of those stupid one-hit deaths. Made the game so much more enjoyable in my opinion. And I think you're spot on about what killed arcades. I remember playing Cybersled on the Playstation for the first time and going "These graphics are actually BETTER than the arcade version!" That's when I knew arcades were on the way out.
O port do Master é bom. Principalmente, considerando que é um cartucho de apenas 2 MBit. Mas, considerando outros games do console, acredito que poderia ser ainda melhor.

Sempre achei um absurdo não terem lançado o Shinobi para o Mega Drive, eu tinha o do Master System, mas teria comprado a versão de MD mesmo assim, o mesmo absurdo foi não terem lançado para o MD um port da versão arcade do Shadow Dancer, sendo que o mesmo já tinha um port para o MS.
Imagino que se os caras tivessem feito para o MD no lugar do MS, talvez tivessem problemas com os arcades. Pois uma vez nos consoles de mesa, correriam o risco do sucesso nos arcades diminuir, diminuindo sua receita.

Tipo siga meu raciocina comigo. no proximo paragrafo Tivesse um port de Shinobi Arcade pra Mega, iria ter apenas uns 3Mega Bits, teriam que cortar fase, as vozes seriam rocas, iria faltar cores, iria talvez não ter bonus, igual acontece com a versão PC Engine. Graça a deus a SEGA não lançou essa perola na época, seria muito mais muito capado. Notam esse versão não oficial, todos os sons são Samples, raro só a musica que utiliza som do console memso, imagina a versão do Mega fosse feito pela SEGA, não teria nem um terço dessa qualidade, vão por mi, sei do que eu estou falando. O Mega Drive era praticamente uma System 16 com um processador gráfico mais pobre e memória RAM limitada. A CPU era a mesma, apenas rodando sob underclock. Ainda assim foi o 1º 16 bit genuíno do mercado, capaz de muitas inovações a nível gráfico e sonoro para época, não ficando muito atrás dos arcades. Porém a Sega poderia ter caprichado mais na estrutura de um produto que lhe rendeu muitas alegrias pela sua enorme popularidade sem pô-lo necessariamente em pé de igualdade com a System 16. A principal carência do Mega era justamente as cores simultâneas, bem aquém do desejável pelo potencial do sistema.
I'm impressed with the homebrew and the inferior Master System version, which still plays great and looks pretty good and has an amazing amount of content. As an amateur coder and retro game enthusiast I read so many arguments about why certain games are better because of a stronger/faster console, but I really don't think the average person really understands or appreciates how powerful one talented coder can be and make a superior game on a weaker machine.
Well, the Master System has its own charm, but the homebrew version for the Megadrive / Genesis looks pretty much arcade-perfect. And as far as i remember, the Master System and the NES versions were the only ones where Joe had a life bar.
It's a shame they couldn't do another Mega drive mini and put the homebrew version of shinobi on it like they did with Darius as that never came out on Mega Drive either, with Mega Drive Grafix and sound as it would have been if it had come out.
Eu simplesmente adoro quase todos os Shinobis, porém esta versão de Master na época me gerou uma super frustração, quando vi as fotos e a caixa, ao colocar no console e começar a jogar, gostei da música, dos gráficos, mas quando fui dar o pulo alto, meu Deus, aquele som que parece efeito especial de Tokusatsu, me decepcionou muito, pois tirou toda a agilidade do ninja, e até hoje é o único Shinobi que gostaria de ter visto um port melhor, e este do Mega deveria ter sido lançado na época, mas não deixa de estar muito, perfeito por sinal.

Master System had more uses when the Mega Drive came out. Maybe that was also a factor. But SEGA should have seen the death of the arcades coming from miles away. SEGA don't care. They just love arcades.

Honestly, at the period i was kinda happy with the MS version of Shinobi, even with the limit of the version. Even more honestly, what really disappointed me from Sega, is the choice to ruin other Master pieces of coin ops, such Shadow Dancer and Alien Storm, the homeversions 16 bit of those Master Pieces, where absolutely ugly, specially Shadow Dancer, completely remade in a very ugly fantascientific atmosphere in place of the amazing and colourful atmosphere of the cabinet...
You know that the Sega Mega Drive wasn’t the first 16 bit game console to ever be released in the world right? No, it wasn’t, the first one was the TurboGrafx 16 (also known as the PC Engine in other countries), it was the first 16 bit home console to ever be released to the public. So sorry, the Sega Mega Drive wasn’t the first of it’s kind, it was the TurboGrafx 16.

@NumptyMagnet The home port was a good game, but it was different from the arcade version. They only had the dog companion in common.

Honestly, at the period i was kinda happy with the MS version of Shinobi, even with the limit of the version. Even more honestly, what really disappointed me from Sega, is the choice to ruin other Master pieces of coin ops, such Shadow Dancer and Alien Storm, the homeversions 16 bit of those Master Pieces, where absolutely ugly, specially Shadow Dancer, completely remade in a very ugly fantascientific atmosphere in place of the amazing and colourful atmosphere of the cabinet...
